Americans won't do the work that undocumented workers are doing without good pay and benefits and that cost to the food corporations will be passed on to the consumers. That means higher costs for food at restaurants and fast food joints too. So, The cost of food will be about double what it is today. The more spent on food, the less spent on other things, lower demand means loss of jobs in other areas.

@Essequamist Unfortunately, since much of the world uses the US dollar as a reserve currency, if there is financial collapse in the States it will be the equivalent of an "extinction level event" for economies across the globe. This is the ultimate downside to the small world ideal. It prevents massive wars but when a major piece leaves the field it takes a multitude of other pieces with it. I think the people of the US will burn DC to the ground before it gets that bad, though.

Americans won't do the work that undocumented workers are doing without good pay and benefits and that cost to the food corporations will be passed on to the consumers. That means higher costs for food at restaurants and fast food joints too. So, The cost of food will be about double what it is today. The more spent on food, the less spent on other things, lower demand means loss of jobs in other areas.

The health care bill is an attempt to level the disconnect in the health system between those who can afford health care and those who can not.
The same go's for the Bush tax cuts which only benefit the top 1/100th percentile of the richest.

@Essequamist Unfortunately, since much of the world uses the US dollar as a reserve currency, if there is financial collapse in the States it will be the equivalent of an "extinction level event" for economies across the globe. This is the ultimate downside to the small world ideal. It prevents massive wars but when a major piece leaves the field it takes a multitude of other pieces with it. I think the people of the US will burn DC to the ground before it gets that bad, though.

The problem is that people can't live within their means. The system encouraging (not just allowing) it will fail. It must fail. It's not a problem of specific country or specific people (unless you are speaking of today).

We have congressmen sexting, senators and governors with love childs. We have 9.1% unemployment, we are in debt to our ears, housing market is a joke. We should expect integrity in managing our country and if they have no integrity in their personal life how is that assuring that they are doing their job with integrity?

The failed attempt by government to rescue the US economy plus the two wars have considerably increased the US debt.
The US may have killed Bin Laden, but he succeeded in bringing down the whole USA, which ironically is the USA's own fault.
The crisis is still going on and the debt will not be repaid.
