As a matter of interest, What year did you buy the Genesis from your friend for $20?? And what was the current retail price at the time? I'd assume you got the bargain of a lifetime.
The genesis model 2 was not only my first experience with an actual genesis, but my first retro console. Recently I plugged it in and it started smoking, so I unplugged, looked into getting it repaired and for the price of reparation, I might as well just buy a new genesis. Yesterday, I acquired Model 1 genesis off eBay for only 10 bucks, with a turbo controller, a quick shot and a standard. Came with the av cable instead of the crap rf switch and the power cable.
I remember always wanting to go to my cousin's house because he had a Sega with Sonic the Hedgehog. I was born in 1992 so the genesis wasn't exactly new but I was envious because all I had was a Gameboy.
i frist played a genesis in 2005 and it was the modle 3 its my uncles which is the same age as me 12 the games where sonic 3, street fiter 2, toy story, and sonic spinball
Genesis is still my all time favorite. It had my favorite games...M1 Tank, Starflight, Star Control, Buck Rogers....man those were the days. We rented them from around 1989 to 1992 or so when my wife bought me both the Genesis and SNES as Christmas presents. I then kept them until 1995. In 1994 my wife got me a computer system and I never went back to them. Then in 95 I needed to upgrade that system and sold each of the consoles for $50 a pop. They were like new..Worst thing I ever did.
@vintagevideogamegeek Lol i've considered that a lot but it would not be the same to me. I think i want them more because they were surprise Christmas presents from my wife. Something we really couldn't afford but she got me anyways. I loved them both but being from my wife made them special. Me and my dang computer habit :)
Ive always had an SNES and a Sega Genesis when I was born, i have an older brother who's only a few years older than me and my dad would always play them I was too young to understand how to play them at first but I enjoyed watching them, so there was never a moment in my life where I didn't have a console to play, i think that's pretty cool who else can say that. (probably alot of people in my situation)
I never had a Genesis as a little kid, we had a SNES. It wasn't till a few months ago that I bought a Sega Genesis for 30$ with 2 controllers and 2 games.
i bought a model 2 at a flee market for $3 no wires no nothing but i hooked up a ps2 power cable to it and it turned on :) soo i will buy the cables and stuff to it eventually and not yet ive never played 1 yet
I think there is also another difference between the 2 model 1 sega genesis consoles: the first model allowed you to play genesis/megadrive games from any region, the second version model 1 genesis had a region lockout chip which prohibited people from playing games from other regions except their own.
Great video. Very informative. I had been wondering about possible 1.0 and 1.2 differences.
Oh yeah, the fact you bought the system and games for $20 bucks way back then is insane. Seriously, it baffles me more than people finding gold in the wild because he must have known it's value, if not in gameplay alone.
Damn, what a steal. Or he could have just been a very nice friend, who the hell knows, heh
I love the genesis. I found a great deal on craigslist for 20 bucks, the complete system and three games. i talked the guy down to 13 bucks. best deal ever!
Well there were 3 families on our street where our mothers conspired to get us all master systems on the same xmas, a few years later I knew I was getting a Mega Drive, I was pushing hard for it, and even bought sonic 2, and Donald Duck Quack attack and wrapped them up and put them under the xmas tree, thankfully my mother pulled through and so did my mates mothers, we all got pretty much the same games too, although I was the only one with Sonic 2. ok i'm ready to get down the mega drive and play some sonic, road rash and desert strike now, you've sold it to me :) i didn't actually own a genesis/mega drive until the late 90's, but back when all the 16 bit craze was on one my best friend's had a been lent a model 1 with the sega cd add on and we hooked it up to the back of the tv, and we'd ripped all the cables out the back of the tv and played all the classic games i.e nightrap, etc and after we had finished playing we noticed we had...
Sadly I didn't get to play a Genesis yet, though it's still the Mega Drive over here.
Loved your review, as always, but could you match the volume of your voice to the music in the beginning? I don't mind cranking up the volume to listen to you, I just think it's better to keep it at the same level throughout the video.
I bought my Genesis along with Sonic 2, Aladdin, and NHL 94 for $1 at a yard sale in Canada. I traded it for a NES with a bunch of games and that is how I started my NTSC NES collection.
Nice review, the Mega Drive/Genesis is my favourite system and I think you covered it pretty well. The first time I played a Mega Drive was about a year ago, I got one with 11 games from my local store. I wasn't even born when the Mega Drive first came out, I kinda wish I'd been around back then but at least the games are pretty cheap nowadays.
Nice review. We share a lot of our sega genesis history. I got it first when I was 11, in 89. With some awesome games for the time, like golden axe, space harrier 2, super thunderblade, revenge of shinobi, ect..Had some newer games after, like sonic 1 and 2. Then, when the snes came out and me knowing that street fighter 2 was gonna come out for it which was a big deal at the time, I sold all my genesis games and the system just to get the snes with zelda and street fighter lol..We both regret!
@StockRoom209 I love how Space Harrier "2" and "Super" Thunderblade were just improved versions of the Master system ports instead of true sequels. Oh Sega, you're so funny! Hey, Street Fighter came out for the Genesis!
@vintagevideogamegeek Space harrier 2 was a sequel, nothing was the same except the gameplay. Just like the snes, super was always used for a game's improvement. Street fighter 2 came out almost a year after the snes and it was pretty awful lol
damit, I have to of what you call the genesis 1.2 models, but ill probley come across the hi def on someday. I love the style of the model on as well. Great vid and keep up the good work dude!
Thanks for the GREAT review! I bought a SEGA Genesis and a Baseball Game from Value Village (a Canadian second-hand store) -- it worked -- but it missed the TV Adapter! I'm going to order one some time and play it!
@vintagevideogamegeek Yes is is one of them are peee gees. hahaha, you should try it sometime if you can pick it up at a thrift store for cheap, it's a good game :)
The genesis was the first system I ever played back when I was 3 years old. I remember playing sonic and golden axe for hours on end. It was also my introduction to one of my favorite fighters, UMK3, and got me into Mortal Kombat. I fondly remember playing jurasic park on the sega cd and its still my favorite point and click game. I love the genesis to this day, I wish I still had mine, but it died.
Had a Model 1 sittin in my house 4 years n never knew what it was. First played it bout 2002. I think my parents threw it out 5 years ago. Now I have a Model 2.
@sonichockeyaug yea man, alot of my neighbors were jealous of me cause i had the genesis and it had the more adult oriented games, and SONIC! lol. like mortal kombat actually had alot of blood on genesis, but on Super Nintendo it was grey.
I think I first came in contact with the Mega Drive, as it's called here, back in 1992. A friend of mine had one and we would play the Streets of Rage and Road Rash games for hours. I bought a Model 2 Mega Drive myself in 1998. It was basically collecting dust for 11 years until I bought some 40 games for it in 2009. Now I'm really happy about my collection. I think I've managed to track down every game worth having and then some for the system and I play it regularly.
@vintagevideogamegeek Oh there are so many... :) I'm mostly into side scrolling beat'em ups, like the Streets of Rage games, TMNT Hyperstone Heist and Comix Zone. Then there are the Mutant League Hockey and Football sports games. Who doesn't love a sport game featuring chainsaws? Gunstar Heroes is another must-have. Great graphics and great sound combined with even better gameplay. With all the good games for the Mega Drive/Genesis, it really is like a PS2 of the early 90s.
@TheRitva26 no i have not, could you fill me in as to why he talks that way? i wasn't making fun or trying to offend him, i was just simply making an observation...
@TheRitva26 why are you all butt hurt just cause i said he talks like his mom is in the other room.... stop coming to his defense when it isn't even needed considering i wasn't talking shit. His "mellow" voice sounds forced in my opinion....nuff said....
@lsvtecb18c1 just cos i replied to u don't mean i'm defending him, he doesn't need it. ur paranoid, but that's what happens to people who just sit at home 24/7 .. peace, i mean u no harm
@TheRitva26 HAHAHA as im actually about to walk out the door to see fast five with my GIRLFRIEND. u stupid nigger. lol go kill yourself and do the community a favor. NUFF SAID lol loser
i remember the model 1 was more difficult to hook the 32x up to, cause it need some metal pins in the cartridge tray and what not. i remember my friend would always turn the volume slider all the way up when we started playing cause he thought it enhanced the gameplay and sound, even though i always kept telling him it was only for the fucking head phones LOL. so funny
@vintagevideogamegeek thats good man, for real i wasn't trying to offend when i said u had a soft/low voice, it just sounded kinda forced to me. It didn't keep me from subscribing / friending / commenting...i just wanted to say that i do like your reviews/videos bro. keep em coming -Cheers from Maryland. :-D
Ah, the Sega Genesis.... My very first gaming memory was going next door to my neighbor's house and trying Sonic 1 on their model 1 console. I've been hooked on games ever since.
But I never owned one myself for years. I only received one as a gift three years ago, but it has been a great system to have, and it really does send me down the nostalgia loop when I pop in Sonic 1. Life was so much easier being 3.
My best Sega Genesis memory is when I bought one for my little brother's birthday. And to this day he says it was the best bday gift anyone ever gave him.
I first got a sega genesis for Christmas, and it was one of the later models. The only games I ever got for it were Sonics 1-3 and Aladdin.I lived right behind a rental store, so I would just rent games and play them for a day before returning them. It finally just plain crapped out on me one day, so I sold it off to a friend who said that he would try to fix it. I really need to get a new one, along with a copy of Rocket Knight Adventures. :)
I really wanted an SNES. Genesis was cheaper. I got a genesis :) Not much else to tell. At the end of the day, I played the crap outta my genesis. Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force 1, and Landstalker are my fav. games from the console.
awesome review and great editing i only have the model 2 megadrive this ones my favourite by far because it has high definition graphics written across it lol :D keep up the great work!
I got my first Genesis in boy scouts when I was 6. I won it for selling the most tickets and I haven't stopped loving Sega since! I got my first Atari 2600 from MN12BIRD! He's a cool dude! >_<\m/
I have to buy AV cable to my Sega MD cause looking for the picture over and over again is driving me crazy. Double Dragon 3 and Rocket Knight Adventures are waiting in line to play them. Unfortunately back in 80/90' I only played on my friends consoles I had only ZX Spectrum. my parents told me If I have a computer what I need console for.... So I had only handhelds cause they where good for trip.
haha that module box says 'the telegenesis module is approximately nine inches long'..who gives a mastersystem how long the thing is! I also notice the classic 90s design features, the extension port, headphone jack, redundant modem port, dodgy composite AV out, etc. An excellent quality video man, really enjoyed it. Bird's test sounds interesting. By high def you would really need RGB Scart though; JP modded at 60Hz. You ommitted to mention the PC Engine, its earliest competitor, but hey!
first time i played genesis was seeing that game STRIDER. wow what an amazing arcade game experience! it was to me a "perfect" conversion for its time. i also remember playing mickey mouse castle of illusion after school a lot (in 1990 in junior high school).
the genesis had more arcade games than the super nes. snes did not have arcade conversion of hot titles like double dragon and of course all the sega arcade games like outrun chopilfter shinobi series (well the fake one) strider and so on. super nes did have other arcade hits though like final fight which was great for its time but then sega got it on the cd with final fight CD which was perfect
the 6 button controller is better it just feels better to hold for me
ive got a hd graphics model megadrive, also got myself a scart cable for proper stereo and rgb
my brother had a model 2 from when it was launched so i got to play that, back in the day i saw a computer that could play megadrive games which was interesting
I wish I had fond memories of the Genesis but I don't. I love it now but as a kid I had one that sat around and mostly collected dust. I was a huge Nintendo fan as a kid and pretty much everything else at the time took a back seat. I got my NES in 1988 when I was 5 and played it to death. I then got the SNES for Xmas the year it came out. I got my Genesis some time after that but it was the model two. When I first got it I played Sonic a lot but that was really all and I went back to the SNES.
@WWETNABRAVES My friend had a Genesis before me and what really made me want one was Sports Talk Baseball. The only game I can recall preferring on the Genesis to the SNES was Mortal Kombat because the blood was left in. Anything else multiplatform I always got for the SNES. I had a Sega CD model one as well. I got it in 94 at Easy Pay Tire store on discount for like $100. My mom bought it for me. I had two games. Marky Mark make your own music video & some ninja game. It blew.
I never even knew the model one existed until the late 90's when I became a hardcore gamer. I knew about the model three though as I once saw it at TRU on display. I never knew about the 32X at all as a kid either. I honestly do not recall what happened to my Genesis and Sega CD. I moved to Ohio in 1995 and I have no memory of them up here. I do recall my SNES coming along with me though and I had it until 99 when I sold it after getting a Dreamcast.
I wish I had given the Genesis more of a chance as a kid but it seemed to be the more mature of the two systems and after all I was a kid. I was a die hard Nintendo fan up until the Gamecube came out. That is when I pretty much gave up on Nintendo. I liked the N64 a lot and more than the Playstation. I have never owned a Wii but have played it and was not really impressed. I have a 360 now and could not be happier. I have an SNES again and a Genesis and love both.
Sorry for the long rant but my story took longer than I expected. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work. Oh and if you have a Sega CD I would love to see a review on it as well as the Gamnegear which I have never owned nor played in my life. I had a Gameboy though as a kid and loved it.
I remember renting a Genesis when it first came out. The first games I played were. Batman, Last Battle, Hell Fire, and Altered Beast. I was blown away by it! I kept bugging my parents to buy me one. Glad they didn't because I would have never got my SNES. Which I enjoyed a lot more.
I had a mega drive when I was young and I love it! I whent back to my dad's house and I found it, all of it's dusty form and a 6 in 1 cart, all of it still worked :)
the first time I played a sega genesis, was at a friends house. after seeing what it had to offer I knew i made the right decision choosing the super nintendo lol.
Awesome review. That first part was hilarious. I wonder why they stopped advertising for the PBC on the model 2s. I got mine in '94 on my 15th BDay. I know just how you feel looking back at your pawn shop sale. I also sold mine in '99, but used the money towards my first launch system: the Dreamcast.
The first time I actually played a genesis was my aunt and uncle's which i really liked but my parents did not want to spend the money to get one dispite it was pretty late in the systems life. What they got me instead is my sega nomad that i showed in my video because we traveled a lot so I have actually never owned a real genesis.
I got mine in the end of 96 and it still works well. I bought games for the system and since I saw some videos on youtube about great games that cost a bit but they were amazing back in the 16 era . I manage to buy a copy of the game castelvania 3 just for a couple of euros great game no doubt about it
I got the Sega Genesis for christmas in around 1993 or so. I was really young but it was one of those memories that just stays with you. We had gotten it and popped in Sonic 2.
ya man great job....i remember the days,,,,i had a nes but went to a friends house and saw tht tommy lasorda baseball...i was ahhhh i want it,,i hated going bak home to my nes .....soooo gay,,,
My first time playing the Genesis was spent switching between Altered Beast and Air Buster for hours on end at my cousins house when I was oh..5 or 6 years old. Eventually he had to get rid of it, and decided it would make a neat little present for me a few years later. It's still sitting on my gaming shelf with its games stacked around it. :)
I love a fair few Genesis games but I firmly believe that the SNES had better games and games that appeared on both systems always seemed to look and sound much better on the SNES. I don't have the same nostalgia for the Genesis as I didn't own one as a kid and only played it at friends houses but even so I still think had I owned it I still would have favored the SNES.
@SMAAAASHTV That's because SONY teamed up with Nintendo to create the SPC700 sound chip. The difference between the SNES and the Genesis is that the Sega Genesis uses an actual FM Synthesizer Chip for its music and sounds while the SNES used a sound sampling chip for its sounds and music. So what is the actual difference? Well, the Genesis's music sounded more gritty in its FM, and its sound samples were very poor, while the SNES, used instrument and voice samples for sounds and music.
@MysticArksRevenge yep, I have done plenty of research on both systems and find that the only thing the Genesis had on the SNES was the processor speed. While you can definitely see some lag in certain SNES games I don't think I've ever seen a Genesis game lag. Also the SNES had much better 3rd party support with Square making RPG's and Capcom releasing the Megaman X series plus Nintendo's excellent 1st party lineup with the Mario, Zelda, Kirby and Metroid games.
my first mega drive experience was with the ultimate mega drive collection they released a year or so ago. had NES > SNES growing up but some of the games on the collection are still fun today. shame to see sega fall out of the console race
I feel your pain with selling your old games....been there done that. My biggest regret: selling my boxed SNES to Gamestop when they still accepted snes trade ins. Sigh.
So out of all 3 Genesis versions, the 1st model was the best?

Sadly I didn't get to play a Genesis yet, though it's still the Mega Drive over here.
Loved your review, as always, but could you match the volume of your voice to the music in the beginning? I don't mind cranking up the volume to listen to you, I just think it's better to keep it at the same level throughout the video.
Cheers!

StockRoom209 9 months ago
@StockRoom209 I love how Space Harrier "2" and "Super" Thunderblade were just improved versions of the Master system ports instead of true sequels. Oh Sega, you're so funny! Hey, Street Fighter came out for the Genesis!
vintagevideogamegeek 9 months ago
@vintagevideogamegeek Space harrier 2 was a sequel, nothing was the same except the gameplay. Just like the snes, super was always used for a game's improvement. Street fighter 2 came out almost a year after the snes and it was pretty awful lol
StockRoom209 9 months ago
@StockRoom209 It WAS awful if you tried to play it with the three button.

I think I've managed to track down every game worth having and then some for the system and I play it regularly.
zelamer 9 months ago
@zelamer What are your favorite games for it?
vintagevideogamegeek 9 months ago
@vintagevideogamegeek Oh there are so many... :) I'm mostly into side scrolling beat'em ups, like the Streets of Rage games, TMNT Hyperstone Heist and Comix Zone. Then there are the Mutant League Hockey and Football sports games. Who doesn't love a sport game featuring chainsaws? Gunstar Heroes is another must-have. Great graphics and great sound combined with even better gameplay. With all the good games for the Mega Drive/Genesis, it really is like a PS2 of the early 90s.
zelamer 9 months ago
I bought my first Genesis when I was 14, I bought Sonic 1, 3 and, Knuckles, Since then I've only got about 7 more games.

Unfortunately back in 80/90' I only played on my friends consoles I had only ZX Spectrum. my parents told me If I have a computer what I need console for.... So I had only handhelds cause they where good for trip.
Baieros 9 months ago
haha that module box says 'the telegenesis module is approximately nine inches long'..who gives a mastersystem how long the thing is! You ommitted to mention the PC Engine, its earliest competitor, but hey!
futurematt5 9 months ago
@futurematt5 That's what she said! (In reference to the nine inches long comment.) ???
Come now old boy, how could the PC Engine honestly compete with the Genesis? It isn't even a REAL 16-Bit system! (Gentleman's laugh) :-)

AlirazaVideoGames 9 months ago
@AlirazaVideoGames Both of those are great games!
vintagevideogamegeek 9 months ago
the genesis had more arcade games than the super nes. snes did not have arcade conversion of hot titles like double dragon and of course all the sega arcade games like outrun chopilfter shinobi series (well the fake one) strider and so on. super nes did have other arcade hits though like final fight which was great for its time but then sega got it on the cd with final fight CD which was perfect

WWETNABRAVES 9 months ago
@WWETNABRAVES My friend had a Genesis before me and what really made me want one was Sports Talk Baseball. The only game I can recall preferring on the Genesis to the SNES was Mortal Kombat because the blood was left in. Anything else multiplatform I always got for the SNES. I had a Sega CD model one as well. I got it in 94 at Easy Pay Tire store on discount for like $100. My mom bought it for me. I had two games. Marky Mark make your own music video & some ninja game. It blew.

WWETNABRAVES 9 months ago
@WWETNABRAVES Well, who didn't?
vintagevideogamegeek 9 months ago
I never even knew the model one existed until the late 90's when I became a hardcore gamer. I knew about the model three though as I once saw it at TRU on display. I never knew about the 32X at all as a kid either. I honestly do not recall what happened to my Genesis and Sega CD. I moved to Ohio in 1995 and I have no memory of them up here. I do recall my SNES coming along with me though and I had it until 99 when I sold it after getting a Dreamcast.
WWETNABRAVES 9 months ago
I wish I had given the Genesis more of a chance as a kid but it seemed to be the more mature of the two systems and after all I was a kid. I was a die hard Nintendo fan up until the Gamecube came out. That is when I pretty much gave up on Nintendo. I liked the N64 a lot and more than the Playstation. I have never owned a Wii but have played it and was not really impressed. I have a 360 now and could not be happier. I have an SNES again and a Genesis and love both.
WWETNABRAVES 9 months ago
Sorry for the long rant but my story took longer than I expected. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work. Oh and if you have a Sega CD I would love to see a review on it as well as the Gamnegear which I have never owned nor played in my life. I had a Gameboy though as a kid and loved it.
WWETNABRAVES 9 months ago
I remember renting a Genesis when it first came out. The first games I played were. Batman, Last Battle, Hell Fire, and Altered Beast. I was blown away by it! I kept bugging my parents to buy me one. Glad they didn't because I would have never got my SNES. Which I enjoyed a lot more.

P.S.> I believe the plural is Geneses. =)

The first time I actually played a genesis was my aunt and uncle's which i really liked but my parents did not want to spend the money to get one dispite it was pretty late in the systems life. What they got me instead is my sega nomad that i showed in my video because we traveled a lot so I have actually never owned a real genesis.

ChaoticArrow155 9 months ago
I love a fair few Genesis games but I firmly believe that the SNES had better games and games that appeared on both systems always seemed to look and sound much better on the SNES. I don't have the same nostalgia for the Genesis as I didn't own one as a kid and only played it at friends houses but even so I still think had I owned it I still would have favored the SNES.
SMAAAASHTV 9 months ago
@SMAAAASHTV That's because SONY teamed up with Nintendo to create the SPC700 sound chip. The difference between the SNES and the Genesis is that the Sega Genesis uses an actual FM Synthesizer Chip for its music and sounds while the SNES used a sound sampling chip for its sounds and music. So what is the actual difference? Well, the Genesis's music sounded more gritty in its FM, and its sound samples were very poor, while the SNES, used instrument and voice samples for sounds and music.
MysticArksRevenge 9 months ago
@MysticArksRevenge yep, I have done plenty of research on both systems and find that the only thing the Genesis had on the SNES was the processor speed. While you can definitely see some lag in certain SNES games I don't think I've ever seen a Genesis game lag. Also the SNES had much better 3rd party support with Square making RPG's and Capcom releasing the Megaman X series plus Nintendo's excellent 1st party lineup with the Mario, Zelda, Kirby and Metroid games.
SMAAAASHTV 9 months ago
@SMAAAASHTV And that's what angers me. That is PRECISELY WHY I hate Nintendo.
