Bouncing does not necessarily increase starting speed. And I seriously doubt anyone is "twice as fast" as Mikio Yahara. Also, tournament karate for points is altogether different from "keep yourself alive" karate. Scoring a point is one thing, taking out multiple attackers with basically one technique per attacker (which Yahara has done as professional provider of security against Japan's Yakuza) is something else again. Strong technique needs a strong platform.
The modern WKF bouncing method of sparring certainly is quick and to the point, but lacks power and is more like a game of tag than a match between two fighters....but if it is fun and the competitors enjoy it, who cares!
However, it is changed to that, because of the adjustment to the olympic. Since JKA ippon rule caused lots of injuries due to the hard hitting rule and it is extremely hard to judge, the JKA rule donsn't do good as sport.
WKF rule is more safe and easier to judge, though it lacks real combat aspects.
it is suitable for sports. I personally like JKA rule better, but as long as spreading karate as a popular sports, WKF rule is fine.
I agree that it is important to protect the competitors, and you are right, many in the older style kumite were injured more frequently. I guess you can't have everything and still have a safe contest.
It's also ruining karate as a martial art, because martial arts are about fighting. We're going to wind up like post-Olympic TKD if this continues.
The best solution, to keep things real but also keep it accessible to most people, is to add the SuperSafe helmets the Koshiki Karate organization uses. Then you can hit full contact with no injuries.
This was from the good old days wasn't it? I do see a stark difference between this and the modern bouncy-boy sparring....it has turned into so much nonsense lately. This is refreshing to watch.
This movie shows exactly why competitors bounce now. These guys were the top fighters of their time. Now compare them to someone like Biamonti. He is about twice as fast as them. And that is because modern karate is a lot faster then this karate. Because of bouncing, which also makes it harder for your opponent to read your techniques.
First, I have been teaching this system since the late 60's and have experimented with bouncing and not bouncing and it has little to do with speed of technique. It is used by some to break the rythm of the opponent. It is also a way to waste energy and can easily be used against the person doing it. There is no way to win a debate for or against it.
Now I haven't been doing karate from the 60's. I wasn't even born then. I have done competition for more than 10 years however and have experimented with bouncing and without. For me there is deffinately an increase of starting speed. I also don't see it as waste of energy since karate matches don't take longer than a couple minutes. It is true that bouncing makes you weaker to a sweep, you are lighter on your feet, which is why you need to change your rhytm. Something many don't.
excuse me but have any of u ever attended a seminar run by or trained with sensei tanaka? hes literally the happiest man in the world! even tho he doesnt always smile u can sense how happy he is an proud. however u can see once he puts on his gye...hes not the type of person to be disrespectful to...last summer camp tanaka sang a song to his wife at the banquet in front of like 200 black belts...im sure that tells u something about him.
you see that all the time.... judges just cant see what color flag they are wearing right away...so they throw out the flag they first see... then correct themselves if they are scoring the wrong color. tanaka always looks mad, even if he's drinking at the bar. lol
catch the details
the last point look for the jugde on the chair
looks like the great tanaka
he lifts the white flag for yahara
but changes his mind and lifts the red flag for imamura

To me it is a waste of time and energy.

Some of those kicks are going in full power and having little effect.
Even though I dont like the ippon system and think most of these guys should have proven themselves in full contact bouts I do like
Tanaka' techniques and personality. At least he isnt full of pose and enforces his ego and a demonstration
by putting the techniques in to the partner.

Near match end we see Tanaka first award the wazari to Yahara, then quickly change his mind (and flag) to give it to Imamura instead! ;-)
