The original hotel was made with cedar lap siding, not cinder blocks. It also didn't have sleeve air conditioners under the windows, and the windows were not picture windows but two double hung type windows.
This place looks like a chinzy 60s built dorm at one of the UC campuses.
@Livinggreen100 I find it very admirable that you know about these details of the house :) not many people take interest in that, but I sure did. Pretty cool tid bit of information, thank you so much for sharing it :)
@pattisgirls Now I know why. They moved the house, and hotel in 1980 from its original location near Laramie St. It wasn't until 1998 that the house and hotel was seriously saved as and attraction of its own.
They still did a terrible job with that hotel. It really looks like a howard Johnson with "L" shaped structure put around it. I noticed too, the flourescent lights under above the walk-way. Terrible re-creation.
@Slidecage los angeles in hollywood if you want to see the set you can! take the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour and you will able to see it and a guy dressed upp like norman goes in to nr 1 and later comes out whit a dead lady body, goes up to the bus and scares the heck out of you
Thank you 214, felipe & bexcpfc for explaining this to us. Still a cool thing to see though. I always wondered if any of the scenes were shot in any of the rooms and now I know.
haha u can see whoville from the grinch right behind it lol kinda kills the scary part haha. i wish i couldve walked around there but i had to stay on the tram :(
so this isn't the actual set from the original psycho? I've been on that tour more than once, and all these years I thought we were driving by THE site of the filming location. Are any of the buildings real? It' still cool, either way. Thanks for posting.
The remake house is no longer there. It was built in front of the original house in 98, but taken down shortly thereafter so you could see the original house on the tour still...
@pollyweb1 He clearly states in the video that "the Office and Cabin #1 are practical sets, which means there are real rooms inside them. Every other room in the Bates Motel is what we call a shell, which means they're just used for exterior filming."
From what I've read, the motel is NOT the original. But the house IS. Also, the location (where the house and motel sit) is NOT the original site. Years it was moved (maybe more more than once). Although the house is original, the motel was rebuilt during the relocation.
From what i know and from some of what they are saying in this video, that is not the original site of the first movie but all the movies from 2 on was filmed at this site, the motel was clearly rebuilt because that motel now has masonry on on the outside in part 2 and 3 it is made of wood siding, i don't know if they totally tore down the other one or they just re faced it with masonry,as far as the house, i don't know if that is the original or not ,
Hoping for a TV airing this October and DVD release early next year for the 50th anniversary of the original. Check the My Space page for all the latest details! Thanks!
i remember in 2006 when my dad took me to that universal studios on Halloween horror nights and they let us get off the Tour bus and walk through the house
They don't let you walk through the house because it's an empty shell. There's nothing in there. All interiors were filmed on sound stages. They let you walk around the motel during Halloween Horror Nights.
@Beattie77 you can! take the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour and you will able to see it and a guy dressed upp like norman goes in to nr 1 and later comes out whit a dead lady body, goes up to the bus and scares the heck out of you
They do that for Halloween Horror Nights. The tram stops in front of the "Grinch" movie set and they let you get out and walk up to the Bates Motel and all the way up to the house. They even have a person playing Norman Bates that you can take pics with.
I actually was there for Halloween horror nights and as weird and nerdy as it sounds being able to stand on the steps of the house is almost a religious experience, knowing there is so much history and that it gave so many people nightmares and it;s right in front of you, under your feet
Check out the original movie...not the 90's remake, but the original 60's Psycho movie and you'll see why. It's an absolute classic and was first of it's kind back in the day.
The car is wrong. It's a 1959 Ford, but the car Marion bought at the used car lot was a 1957 Ford. That's what Norman put her in the trunk of, and pushed into the swamp which was conveniently right next to the motel.
This incorrect car does, however, have the correct license plate (NFB 418).
i would kill to be able to check out the house. i just want to walk around inside, see his mom's room, the room where Meg Tilly took a shower, and of course, the basement. i went to Universal Studios but they didn't let us get off.
Actually the second film we're talking about is PSYCHO II, the 1983 official sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. Anthony Perkins played Norman Bates 2 more times in PSYCHO III (1986) and PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINNING (1990). All those movies are far superior to the remake.
It was made by Paramount but on the Universal backlot. They were nervous of Hitchcock doing a low budget black and white horror movie, hence they let him film it at another studio. The house was moved from it's original location when they made Part 2 and has remained in that spot ever since.
The remake was shot on the same spot as 2 and 3. The actually built the "new" house for the remake right in front of the original house and tore it down after shooting. So all those movies (PSYCHO 2, 3, remake) were made on that spot.
It was part of a tourist attraction. They were just opening the park in Florida, so part of the appeal for people to come was "Oh hey, they're also filming a new PSYCHO movie here!"
you know if you go to universal studois hollywood you could take a private tour tram that you could walk to thw whole thing halfway and the give you details
It's a promotional piece for the upcoming documentary THE PSYCHO LEGACY about the entire PSYCHO franchise. Check out the official My Space page for all the details!
The house itself is actually also a shell! It's empty space except for a ladder which leads to the window where mother's corpse sits! All the interiors of the Psycho house were shot on stages. :-D
