Thanks for sharing your story as I'm collecting them and sharing it on a personal archive site. I interviewed my dad and his brother (uncle), whose dad and grandfather died too during Japanese occupation . As a Christian, I've learned to forgive the Japanese people. Americans somewhat did some "murdering" too after the Spanish-American War when the "took over" the Philippines. I have Japanese and American friends, which we learn from our past mistake and "try" to make peace and reconcile!
For those Filipino's if your mom lived in Cebu, my grandpa was a famous Pepe Mercado Radio host, "a man with a thousand voices". But anyway haha, he was stabbed by a bayonet by a Korean in the Philippines for delivering food for the Jap's when they took over, and my Grandpa whopped some as on that foo.
''he escaped D march''
Thanks so much for posting. Your grandfather is a hero. My Uncle was also a survivor of the Bataan Death March. His name was Biagio Orlando Furnari. He died quite a few years ago. He was honored at A US Naval Ceremony Barracks in Patuxent, Maryland which was named after him. It is called the Furnari Hall Complex. God bless all our brave soldiers.
Your grandfather is a remarkable man. Thank you for posting this live account...and be sure to pass this on to future generations of your family. You should only be so proud that he survived such a dispicable act.
Hirohito should have hung next to Tojo. He could have put an end to the madness years earlier than he did. The emporer was a coward who didn't REALLY care about his people. The shame and disgrace brought upon the Japanese by the militarists should have been enough for Hirohito to do the right thing, but he chose silence. Cowardly, plain and simple...
