Anyway... what do the comments below have to do with Miao Christian worship songs? The A-Hmao have awesome choirs. Much better than some of the CMA choirs in the U.S. It should be a lesson for us.
the chinnese called as Miao, Hmong and miao are same people...the word miao is sound the same what the Lao people call a cat, that's why we got offended when Lao call us Miao in Laos...because it refer us to a cat..Chinnese called us Miao as barbarian in chinna long time ago..
Chi-you was our ancestor, his people did not called Miao..
I just hope these born'again Christians still know who their ancestors are. Christian fundamentalists believe Shem to be the ancestor of all Asians, who appeared in the Bible at least 1000 years later than historical Chiyou; therefore, to them, Chiyou can not be real.
I strongly encourage all of you to do a little research on the Hmong and Miao. Most of the comments here seem very ignorant. I have used the Native American analogy before. Miao is analogous to Native American and Hmong can be analogous to Cherokee. Thus, every Cherokee is Native American, but not every Native American is Cherokee. So similarly, every Hmong is a Miao, but not every Miao is Hmong.
i totally agree with you on your point. but remember those miao groups that we call them hmong-chinese all say they are hmong. who cares about what others think. if we say we are hmong then we are hmong. those hmong-chinese who are not from Wenshan/Paaj Tawg Laag are also our brothers. It's funny when other people think that the only miao group that are our brothers and sisters are those from Paj Tawg Laag.
You are right. Miao is a superset of other minority groups in China. Hmong is simply a subset of Miao. Therefore, you can say Hmong is Miao. But Miao is not necessary Hmong. Furthermore, Hmong refers literally to White Hmong. And Mong refers to non-white Hmong. For example, Mong Blue, Mong Shee, Mong Sao, Mong Poua, and etc. Miao is inclusive/conbined. Whereas Hmong or Mong is devisive. So, when you say "we Hmong", you are referring to the White Hmong only.
Who cares. It's this mentality that has caused so many problems currently and in the paste. Hmong people need to just be Hmong and stop finding excuses to be disunited. Dialect, customs, dress, religion, and spelling of your names means nothing if you continue this practice of splintering your own culture. At this rate, you won't have a culture in 50 years. We are all kin and need to embrace that, instead of finding technical reasons to split. That is why we have no country!
i believe miao is still widely used. i also believe it's only really the SE Asian Hmong that are offended by the term miao.
if you watch enough videos of the "hmong" in china a lot of them even refer to themselves as miao. for example, i will assume you know ayouduo, whether she is hmong or not, she uses the word miao a lot in her songs.
man that is not very good sound to me...miao it sounds like a cat meow...i wish the chinese find a better term to replace miao it is sound very silly. i think the hmong in china have not been through what the hmong se been through so it is not a problem to them to be called maio or maybe it is but they could not do anything about and will just have accept.
yeah, it does sound close to a cat meow but you really have to ask the chinese themselves if they really do relate the word miao to a cat's meow.. as far as i was told by my dad, it was the laotian who abused the word miao and said we were homeless cats in the jungles..
maybe it's just coincidence that we happened to be called miao which is closely related to the sound a cat makes. but i won't say i'm confident about that and i have proof that's it's a coincidence. from my view...
if the miao in china accept the term & use it often to refer to themselves then why don't we accept it as well? surely if the miao in china find it offensive, they would've replced the word a long ago.
i do agree with you that the hmong in china have't gone through the exact same things in recent history as we have. so the term miao only affects us and not them.
for me, i call the group of people we're talking about miao or hmong depending on what they recognize themselves as.
Miao is just the Chinese term/classification. It's not derogatory. There is history to the term and character used and it sounds different from their word for "Cat" (Mao). Just like we Hmong call Chinese "Suav" (look up the origin of the term in Hmong.."count")
The term Miao was first used by the Chinese in pre-Qin times, i.e. before 221 B.C., for designating non-Chinese groups in the south. It was often used in the combinations 'miaomin', 'youmiao' and 'sanmiao'. During the Tang (613-907 A.D.) and Song dynasties (960-1279 A.C.) the term 'nanman' was used for the same peoples. However, the name 'miao' reappeared in Fan Chuo's book on the southern tribes, Manshu (862 A.D.). During the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) 'miao' and 'man' were both used.
Miao is the Chinese name for Hmong, because they can't pronounce Hmong. Most of the "Miao" call themselves Hmong amongst themselves, which is proof enough that we don't call ourselves Miao. Native Americans call themselves by their tribes, ie. Sioux, Cheyenne, Cherokee, etc. They don't call themselves Indians or Injuns, except the whitewashed. That was Christopher Columbus's stupid idea. Hmong also don't call themselves Miao, except to outsiders who know nothing else.
And I'm not even kidding. Chinese had a term for us. Cooked and Raw Hmong. The cooked (like the White Washed Injuns) referred to those there were pacified and or sinicized. Raw were those who were still fiercely independent and refused to submit. Most of the Hmong in Laos that are now in the West can be considered "raw", because they refused to submit to the Qing and moved to escape collateral punishment after Vwj Paj Yia was executed.
it is like the chinese in the usa...we hmong happen to be called chinese for no reason. i take the blame for what i am not...the chinese should be nice to all the hmong in china. oh and japanese too...the american always called me jap or chin and make fun out of it. i believe that the chinese would not appreciate if someone name call them and make a fool out of it. the american always call me ching chong ...i really don't get it and did not understand so i would just ignore.
Is sad to see that all Miao could no longer get along due to their history. So many Maio can't even communicate with each others anymore due to difference in language. The Miao consider to be the most successful are the one who made to the USA and otehr develope countries, they are the "Modern day HMONG."
I think we get along. The Hmoob of America are considered to have a bigger chance of success due to the context of their environment and what society considers to be "success". I don't believe in "Modern day Hmong"--People everywhere are living in modern day, just without advance technology...
I hope my comment is factual and non-offensive. You are encouraged to search the facts and share with the rest of us.
In regard to your comment, it contradicts itself.
Please be sure to let us know when you have " Hmongland / Hmoob Teb / MiaoGuo / 苗族国"
