This was the early demonstration for "NICO", "NEXT ICO", the project that grew into Wander and the Colossus (SotC outside of Japan).
They originally presented it as a sequel to Ico, but this was because it was easier to reuse character models for the demo. It was ultimately decided to make the game a prequel, and it became Wander and the Colossus.
Team ICO is working on a new game for the PS3, but no details have been released, and only a single screenshot has been revealed.
Unfortunately, I believe this game will not happen b/c i heard that this was suppose to be the SOC but got canceled that's why they came out with the SoC to replace this one.

"Nico" is a play on the Japanese word for two and Ico. Originally, Shadow of the Colossus was meant to be a sequel to Ico, hence the many horned riders. However, the developers felt that this path was a little too obvious, so they decided to make a prequel that would inform gamers of the origins of the line of horned boys.
Not necessarily. SOC was officially originally a sequel. If it had been a sequel, the colossi could have been lying dormant for a long time, or they could have begun existing after ICO ended for whatever reason. It's even possible that the colossi in the sequel version of SOC could have been stuck within a general geographic area, and this area was isolated and hard to get into.
There are a lot a ways a sequel could justify the existence of colossi that didn't seem to affect ICO.
it'd be cool to play a sotc2 with 3 characters. imagine: 4 brothers hear a rumor of monsters their father(wanderer) returning to the land and of a girl living in a castle a few miles away, 3 brothers go and kill the colossi and the 4th goes to "repopulate the land"
