Absolutely beautiful intro, stirring mix of achingly poignant metaphors.......
This man deserves the highest awards for songwwriting, IMHO, mystical imagery, slowly revealing retrospective insight into Ian's worldly views, dusted with the foibles of human imperfection....this is art
Not certain Ian was commenting on the moon landing. For Michael Collins, not getting to set foot on the moon had to be a heartbreaker. Cornick was Tull's most accomplished bass player, but like Carlos Santana broke up his first band, Ian didn't feel Cornick's off-stage demeanor fit with Ian's frankly boring lifestyle. That he filled it with Jeffrey is telling. Jeffrey had never picked up a bass until he was offered the gig with Tull.
it's about being left behind/alienation from one's friends. michael collins was the astronaut who stayed in orbit during the first moon landing. as tull grew as a band, Ian and Jeffrey, great pals, grew apart; Ian became famous and Jeffey stayed at home until Glenn Cornick was fired. i'm sure ian had something in his past that left him or he left it.
I've never been able to figure out what his stand was on this subject. The lyrics are very cryptic: he could be for, or against the moon landing, but you can't tell from the lyrics.
The music suggests a love song, without knowing what he's singing about. Something Anderson was very adept at. Great tune, great album.
A brilliant, wonderful tribute to the one member of that mission (Apollo 11) who had to remain in the Command Module. "The Mother Ship is just a blip on this trip made for two ..."
I never really understood the lyrics to this song and I always assumed it was about Michael Collins the Irish revolutionary. Sadly, this isn't the only thing I've gotten wrong for 40+ years. Thank God and Al Gore for creating the internet and setting me straight on so many things. Haters and nasties; don't bother telling me I am an idiot - I already know that!
It is the astronaut roddy. . "I'm with you LEM, though it's a shame that it had to be you. The Mother Ship, is just a blip on your trip made for two. " LEM is the Lunar Excursion Module in which Aldrin and Armstrong travelled to the surface
Michael Collins was on the Apollo 11mission with buzz aldrin and neil armstrong, although he didn't walk on the moon, he was the one left in the mothership and orbited around the monn
ahahaha talk about get completely the wrong idea !!
Yes, I know a bit about Apollo. That's officially the loneliest job ever, being the guy left behind when the other two went landing. Not just the longest distance from other humanity, but he was out of radio contact half the time when he was on the other side of the moon.

This one might be a bit political. Michael Collins was the big hero in the fight against the British after the First World War.
But I could be wrong, it could be another Michael Collins entirely ! Maybe the manager of his fish-farm...........
Not exactly my cup of tea but of course 5 ***** anyway !
