I had a tape in my car for a year in the early 80s... one side was all of Here come the warm jets and the other side was all of Fripp and Eno "No pussyfooting"... that was my commute tape. it played and stopped when I got home to to work... and then it started again when I got in the car either leaving home or leaving work... made perfect sense at the the time... and maybe still does....
who disliked this??? I would love to hear a reason, and Im not a eno fanatic here, infact, i wouldnt even call myself an eno fan, i mean, i have a few of his albums and love him but- yknow what i mean... all of them grinning
For some reason whenever the claps start in this song, it makes me think of old black and white newsreel footage. Hasty snapshots of crime scenes - bookings.
Sorry, but the vocals are forwards. It is IMPOSSIBLE to acheive such a perfect phonetic-wise result. Some backwards sounds are impossibile to create forwards (eg. the sound of a "ch" or a "p" backwards)
I have been working with reverse recording for years, and I know how a backwards voice sounds like. This is not backwards at all, though I have to admit it sounds like he took the melody from a backwards one and he tried to imitate the sound as much as possibile (the sudden stopped "ah!"). ;-)
I remember the first time I heard this! It was the winter of 1974. And yes my crazy cousin drove backwards. I would never think that people are still listening to Eno as we called him in the 70's. It was great music to get the houka out! Goes great with Pink Floyd too!
going through eno albums and this is my favorite song and im only up to another green world which i think i heard like a year ago when i was getting into bowie..
Really enjoyed how the simplicity of a road trip in black and white fit the song. One of my fave Eno songs and love the concept of the video. Smart! Thanx for posting.
this is really good, of course, i always saw this song in slow motion. hey, what about the seven deadly fins? can't find a recording of it anywhere except on that very expensive box set.
Love this video. Love this song

Thank you for a kind message.
I like Driving Me Backwards in a lot of tunes of Eno.
all the best.

@urota1965 - Here Come the Warm Jets was the start of a constantly brilliant solo output. What a genius!

@JDsmiffy1
I think that Here Come the Warm Jets is a great board in which a very free idea gathers.
All tunes in this album shine without fading away still.

This song makes me feel like I am driving my car in a blackout.
He had some really serious vocal treatment going on here!
alternit41 1 year ago
@alternit41 Actually, the way this song was made was that:
-Eno first wrote the words for the song
-Then he sung the song and recorded it
-Then he played the tape backwards and wrote down how the song sounded phonetically
-Then he practiced singing the song phonetically backwards
-Then he recorded the song as it sounds phonetically backwards
-Then he took THAT track and put it in reverse, which is what you are now hearing.
I learned this in 'Sound 1' class in college. NOW THIS IS SOUND ART!

@errolwebberjr -Very interesting. I heard Thom Yorke did something similar for Radiohead's "Like Spinning Plates".
