I think I would only consider using thin layer butter in the pan if I was using sliced bread. I think too much butter would make it really un-healthy.
If you do not use the egg or cinnamon then you may as well not use the egg. That way you will end up with fried bread. Fried bread is great with a cooked breakfast :)
Ah... Australian French Toast :-) Never tried it with italian bread.... I recommend that you drop the sweet stuff and dip them in salsa or any variety of other dips and spreads. Garlic salt could be thrown in the egg wash. One could go nuts with this type of base platform. There are many different directions to explore. This belongs in a "gourmet leftover book" in the "bread" section... Anybody want to finance my new book?.
I like your no nonsense style of straightforward cooking! Well done mate! And this is a great way to use stale bread for a new version of french toast!
Here in Galicia, Spain we heat up the milk first then add a cinnamon stick and keep heating gently. Pour the milk over the cuts of bread. Leave to stand overnight. Cook in Olive Oil. Coat with the sugar cinnamon mix and serve warm. They are not nice cold.
In years gone by the Galicians also poured wine over them for a real hearty breakfast.
Is he trying to get fat? That is wayyyyy~ to much oil, I mean sure it would taste great but you'll probably gain another few pounds of rolls on your tummy
The bread I used was a baguette. I think you could use most bread for this recipe, have a look in your cupboards. I think that the baguettes work really well though.
Good luck with the dish and hopefully you enjoy :)
Hey chef, I want to ask you, why when i cook the bread...it still has the eggy taste in it..so its kinda savory instead of sweet.. yes i already cover the bread in sugar and cinnamon... Thanks Chef always loves your recipe
I think you will always have an eggy taste as that is the coating underneath the sweet flavours. Make sure you have soaked up plenty of milk in the bread first.
Also bread usually does contain some salt, this is possibly the savoury flavour.
looks yummy. have you tried parmesan cheese for a savoury alternative. we call it cheese bread here, very yummy at a local restaurant here. i also do it with a whole egged cooked inthe centre of a slice of bread that you cut out a circle first. i just dip in milk didnt thin to use egg mix as well. interesting.thanks for sharing your recipe. i hope to check out more of your recipes. ss08

@OriginalNakedChef Yes, you should definately try the maple syrup or golden syrup with the American style french toast and that's ok that you normally don't have sweet food for breakfast it is really nice and tell me what you think if you decide to try that :)
If you want a savoury a version of this dish, the simplest form is with just salt and pepper into the egg, disregard the cinnamon and sugar. I would then call that egg bread! Simple but nice

A way that I like to cook this better is, instead of soaking the bread in plain milk, to boil the milk with cinnamon sticks, and soak the bread with that milk and it will give a much better cinnamon taste to the bread itself and not only the sugar-cinnamon outside. Anyway, really good for snacks! Keep it up!

Dolphindream15 3 months ago
@Dolphindream15
I have never tried a sugar substitute for this recipe but it should work fine.
Just sprinkle a bit of splenda and cinnamon on a plate and taste it to make sure there is enough cinnamon.
The quantity does not really important; you want just enough to use up the bread. If you run out, add some more :)

Hello, greetings from Mexico!!
Keep it up!
