This is an oversimplification. Cost is nothing, really? I suppose all those plants in the pond are free? And it needs a waterfall if not the water stagnates and STINKS. Granted waterfall pumps are less amps than a 240v pool motor but still uses electricity. I've been spending the last year converting the pool into a pond and now it's just about ready for fish. Now, the upsides.... I like the wildlife, the frogs and toads and dragonflies.

Ah, the greens wanting to take another amenity in the name of the "environment." What a surprise. If you don't want the responsibility of taking care of a pool, don't buy a house with one. You'll be happier without the extra work. But then, ponds require maintenance, filtration, and electricity, too--it's like an aquarium outdoors. I love ponds as much as the next guy, but when it's 118 degrees out and 5% humidity, I'll take my swimming pool over a pond, thanks.

history is repeating itself.50 yrs ago people changes ponds to pools ,now they are changing pools to ponds.no body is talking about the smell from the pond water.

@kingdomofwitches you keep a filter and its lined so smelly bacteria doesn't have a chance to go. If you keep it clean it doesn't get nasty. Even a fish pond won't stink if you keep it clean.

@FiestyCat86 you are right ,you are talking about a garden pond with pond filter ie a maintained pond.but here they are talking about a pond that is not maintained or least maintained.filled with wild life (sounds great but what are its contents toads,worms, dense clusters of algae and dead plant leaves).some thing natural rather artificially maintained.frogs screams during mating season,smells bad because of rotten leaves, green water because of algae.these are some disadvantages .
