  • nascar sucks these days.

  • Does anyone have the part a week before or something like that where Dale Earnhardt passed Rusty Wallace to technically lead the first ever lap around Indy?

  • @mreed91 That was actually 2 years prior at the first Goodyear Tire test.

  • @racermac1988 Well does anyone have that?

  • The first couple of Indy 500s were actually run with stock cars of the day...

  • Oh really... How so?

  • That's what killed indy and made nascer. Thank's tony

  • I was there. I didn't really have the full understanding of how much Indy meant back then....but I sure do now.

  • Eddie Rickenbaker, a world war one Ace, what a flamilier name. Interesting story about the Brickyard.

  • I hate the COT

  • This is still one of the greatest if not the greatest intro for a NASCAR race ever.

  • nothing wrong with the Brickyard. The surface at Daytona is in far worse shape than most, but they've got plans to repave. It's just part of racing. The bigger problem is the COT and the inability of teams to set it up so they don't burn tires like cigarettes.

  • S*** TRACK?!? MORE LIKE A GOD AWFUL COT CAR that isn't good for anything.

  • Some point to the 1979 Daytona 500 as the time when NASCAR started to go mainstream. This race and its success I think proved NASCAR was the real deal. Sadly I feel like whats happened over the years is the prestige of this race is being lost. Its like the races don't mean as much

  • will this race even survive past 2013? it'll be a sad day when this race goes away.....I hope it won't...

  • Why would it go away? I'm more concerned about the 500.

  • Wasn't the track just repaved a few years ago?

  • but the problem is its like little linear groves...and as the car slides through the corner it tears up the rubber....or so that is what happened last yr...allowing the cars to only run a max of 12laps before they threw the caution to change tires...it was one of the biggest jokes of recent history in the auto racing world...

Will see what happens this year...maybe Goodyear will have a better compound...but alot of blame was given to the track for its grooves

  • Yes, it was.

  • well why would the 500 go away? its still exciting, and safer then ever...

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I remember how this was one of the most critical moments i anticipated for Nascar to evolve even further into the national media attention. I was pissed off when i saw the cover sport section of the chicago suntimes displaying a indy car of "THE BRICKYARD 400"...it's a stock car race and not a indy race! How little at that time did anyone care to even realize that Nascar was making history! I commend those who realize the importance of this introduction!

  • Look at Mark Martin's front end from 1:45 to 1:53. Those were the days when you could bash your front in and still win races!

  • I kinda miss Bob Jenkins and Benny Parsons in the ESPN Booth.

  • I miss them a lot!

Benny (R.I.P.) was great with Bob Jenkins throughout the 1990s.

    Bob Jenkins was excellent.

Unfortunately, ESPN doesn't give a crap about there lackluster PxP announcer who is better in the pits.

  • I'm glad racing is back on ABC!

  • wats up at 1,04

  • That's Tony Hulman, the man that saved the Speedway.

    God rest his sole. RIP

  • I read once that he would always read the starting command from a card to make sure he got it right.

  • does anyone have this years brickyard intro? The one with keifer sutherland??? just curious!!

  • I posted it.

  • Jeff Gordon!

  • I was there in 2004 when Jeff Gordon made history yet again winning his fourth Brickyard race. Every time you go to Indianapolis you are a part of history. I loved it. I was there pumping my fists just like I saw the fans do every time Jeff Gordon won a race there. first time winner, first four time winner, and forever known.

  • All the prima donna broadcasters would bitch and moan to no end if they were held up to the gold standards of the legendary past. ESPN has been emphasizing getting away from "just football" on MNF, and making it a "cultural gathering," or some such nonsense, instead...so it's not just at Indianapolis. It's the problem with society, or at least the ABC/ESPN aspect of it, instead.

  • why cant ESPN just become a good broadcast like they once were? whats so hard putting some delta force music for this weekends brickyard 400? would it hurt you so bad? does it hurt to be a good broadcast? its like the producer of there coverage purposely tries to degrade it.

  • People who make comments about racing comparing nascar to indy car really dont know much about the sport of indy car yes they have made a lot of mistakes spliting the series over the years nascar has a great fan base and will sell out the brickyard 400 at this time but give it some time indy is an awesome racetrack with lots of tradition and the 500 may once again rise to become the most popular race it may take a lot of time it may not but one thing we can all say IMS is best track to race on.

  • Yeah thats why the Brickyard 400 out sell's the Indy 500 and attracks more viewer's on tv. Face it cart is dead, they dont have the name's, they dont have the sponcer's, they dont have he advertisment. Nascar is so big, so main stream, it has a featured show on ESPN every night. No matter how many supermodels or dancing with the star's contestent's you put in the car's it wont matter. At the end of the day your number's sucks and no one care's that Scott Dixon is sitting on the poll.

  • poll...LOL

  • I want you to remember this in 5 years when NASCAR prices itself right out of being able to keep sponsors. By then Indy will once again have the sponsors, and the names.

Kyle Busch winning every week isn't helping NASCAR either...

  • I disagree, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt were dominant like him and people still watched. The sport still thrived. NASCAR only became more mainstream because of the CART/IRL tif and the increased ratings. I do agree the prestige of races like this are being lost.

  • Funny how all that is put in direct contrast to the BS Yellow Marathon we saw yesterday in the Allstate Crap at the Brickyard, while the Indianapolis 500 had a buzz to it that hadn't been seen in a long time. No less than four people in the stands I was in said they'd never come back to the idiocy of NASCAR, but were definitely coming to THE Indy.

    Funny, indeed.

  • Tony Hulman was the best at saying the most famous phrase in motorsports.

  • It would be nice to see (just once) the month of May at Indy with Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart in the same Indy 500 before they retire. This video was when coverage of Nascar wasn't "dumbed" down for the common uneducated redneck...boogity boogity, let go throw up from this terrible coverage boy's!!!

  • waaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaa

    cry some more.

  • I'm with you dude.

  • What the hell. . . O_o never knew ABC did this for NASCAR. . . As usual, Paul Paige did a damn fine intro 'cause it felt just like the 500 ones. Was this the only year for NASCAR Delta Force intro?

  • To my knowledge, yes it was. 1995 might have had one, but with the rain delayed start, I did not tape the rain delay.

  • Ahhh, well thanks for posting this. . .this a gem to anyone who really digs the indy intros. Though I'm no big NASCAR fan, hell, don't really like seeing them run at Indy. But this is pretty cool.

  • I stand corrected with what I told you before... In 1998 Bob Jenkins narrated a Delta Force Intro for the Brickyard 400. 1999 and 2000, I am not sure.

  • Hmmm, don't remember them. Nice to know. Even if it is Nascar. . .:-/

  • This was ABC's first race right?

  • No, ABC had broadcasted NASCAR for years; at first on Wide World of Spotrs, and then live flag to flag races. This was the first Brickyard 400. It had MAJOR hype.

  • Chills. I just get chills seeing this introduction.

  • So do I.

The introduction to NASCAR at the Brickyard, Paul Page's narration, the Delta Force theme, and the visuals of auto racing gets me fired up!

  • I love this. I have the race on tape, but it starts later during the pre-race show. The Delta Force intros were great, and it's awesome to see the music used for a NASCAR race.

  • The rest is History!

  • Comment removed

  • The starter for the first International 500-Mile Sweepstakes race was Fred Wagner. He's the guy waving the checkered flag for Ray Harroun.

  • I'm guessing Mr. Davidson helped you find that nice fact, lol! Good to know, I always wondered who the first man to wave the checkered was.

  • Actually he did not. Johnson's Indy 500 website has a list of all the chief starters at Indy. Also many of old Indy 500 programs tell who was the starter for each year.

  • Really??? I might have to check that out.

  • Have you got a link?

    DK

  • Great stuff friend...thanks a bunch!

  • Fantastic!!! I got this on video tape too!

  • Cool video with the Delta Force music. Thanks for uploading.

  • Hoping you would see this.

I have a question, do you have the 1989 Indy 500 intro. Its the only one of the "Delta Force Intros" not uploaded.

  • Nope, I unfortunately don't. Someone has the whole race somewhere, just a matter of finding out who.

  • I hope you find it and have it up in time for the month of May. Somebody posted the finish to 1989, but not the intro.

  • truly a rare video

  • Thanks for uploading this.

    Thank you very much!
