I remember seeing this video for the first time on TV. I was thinking these older guys are great. Who are they and where have they been? Then I found outit wais Toy Caldwell and fell in love with him and this style of music all over again.
Had not seen this in years! Mark Burrell, Pic Pickens, Tony Heatherly. of course, Charlie Daniels with Toy. Enjoyed seeing this so much! Thanks for sending to me T.
I was blessed to see Toy perform more than10 times around the East Texas area. There is never a day that goes by that I don't think about Toy and how he brought a smile to me when he played his Les Paul and that 335 Gibson in concert. I wished that I could have met him, he was truely a fine person and in my eyes the best guitarest ,EVER !!! Thanks for posting this video.
I know Charlie Daniels from Childress, TX concerts and i was lucky enough to see "Toy" in concert with the Marshall Tucker band in Amarillo (Bojangles).....I've seen everyone from Roy Orison to Pink Floyd and "Toy" was and is one of the most underated guitarists of our time......It was simply amazing to watch him play.....TY for the post........El Fat Boy Texcino
@PupuTheClown .....Yo.....Saw Pink Floyd in Dallas (Texas Stadium) & Kansas City (Arrowhead Stadium)..... Gilmour Solo in San Fransisco & L..A.........and plan to catch Roger Waters Solo in Berlin july 15......Marshall Tucker
i saw many times in Amarillo; Childress and Lubbock
I like Marshall Tucker, but as far as this song goes, I'll take Hank Thompson's 1979 hit version song hands down. Just my personal preference. But this is good.
Well jes sayin we aint really fond of you Yankee's either. wondering why a Yankee would even say such a thing on a southern song bird page? HUH? lost you mind?
Never likes music and NEVER likes the mindset of most northerners, so stay up north, and i will be MORE THAN HAPPY to stay in Dixie, have no reason to go up north. Love my home and my mindset, NOBODY asked for your input on us so SHUT IT BILLY YANK!
As Hank Williams Jr. used to sing - "If heaven ain't a lot like Dixie, I don't wanna go, just throw me to hell or New York City, it'd be 'bout the same to me" :)
First time seeing this vid!....My old next door neighbor and buddy Mark Burrell on the drums! What a great vid. It is so sad that Toy is gone. He was such an amazing guitar player. Though I didn't know him, was told countless time that he was fantastic person and family man.
This ain't a ballgame. Quit keeping score. There is no BEST in music. We owe everyone of these guys our thanks and respect for the joy they give us. Just appreciate the music and forget about the ego trip. God bless all these boys for the the talents they shared with us.
you cant even start to compare the different guitarists mentioned(from undoubtedly the three best bands of the south),but toy certainly made the best of what is without doubt the hardest style of any of them-mesmorizing.
It's amazing Toy endured as he did losing his two brothers in separate car crashes three months apart in 1980. Toy died at age 44. Who knows God's plan, but it just doesn't seem fair.
That's really reaching. Have you ever heard Ricky Medlock just sit and jam? Steve Gains was untouchable and we only got to here him for a year and a half. Allen Collins was in his own league when playing Freebird. Gary Rossington had Duane Allman's playing style. Toy was damn good but I wouldn't say better. The styles are different.
you forgot ed king and hes a pretty good guitarist and if your gonna count Medlocke (although he did play drums for em for a while in the early days) how could you forget hughie? hes a damn good player too and he entered the band the same time as medlocke. on a side note cool to see Toy ad Charlie Daniels
By no means am I taking anything away from Ed King or Hughie. Hughie took most of Steve Gains's solo's while with the band. Bottom line....all those guys are amazing talents, I just don't think you could call Toy Caldwell the best...who could you really call the best out of Allman, Caldwell, Rossington, Collins, Gains, Medlock, Betts, Hughie, etc. I would hate to have to make a pick on who is the best.
I agree with you on that and i did agree with your comment on how it'd be hard to pick the best i was just saying Hughies a great player because Rickey just plays Allen Collins stuff as well. but i wasnt trying to criticize you or nothing cause its hard to pick the best guitarist so hope you didnt take my comment as that
Good point. That era was full of extraordinary talent. And don't forget about the CDB's Tommy Crane. I always thought he should be considered with the other great pickers of the time.
cowbilly57: I met Tommy Crane in 82'(?) I was up in Spartanburg for Moon Mullins' "Spring Fling" he used to have every spring. CDB was playing at Greeneville, SC so we all packed up to say hey to Charlie and the boys...Tommy Crane had broken his pick finger and it was all bandaged up....I wonder why he left CDB, he was one hell of a guitar player.
Well CD & Tommy CRAIN had a deal. the first time CD ask him to join he was doing sumtin with his brother and declined CD invite. The 2nd time CD came caling Tommy was not doing anything. But add he had a commitment with his Brother. CD ask for a notice when it came about. Tommy played the first note ever @ CD's volunteer Jam. Tommy Crain is "BACK" not with CD. but he is BACK. they will jam together again. Toomy & CD had a vary special sound. not to put anyone down. But it has not been the SAME..
Toy Smokes !!!! Anyone out there got a tape of his performance on the Ralph Emory show in the late 80's . I can't beleive that I used to see him at that time in NYC for $13 ..'Cook'in the liv'in shit out of that guitar!
I never get tired of hearing this music. I grew up on it, and, it still sounds great.
RIP, Toy. We miss you.

The respect, friendship and admiration between Charlie and Toy was immense.
I'm a HEEYOOGE Dickie Betts fan, but Toy always owned those Volunteer Jam ... uh ... jams. Nobody played like Toy. Nobody. Ever.

Toy was even a more prolific songwriter than he was a singularly unique guitarist.
He was a rare talent.
ArneFufkin 3 years ago 2
That's just top-shelf pickin' and grinin'. With a thumb, no less.
Put this song and CDB's "South's Gonna Do It Again" in your playlist if you're a band playing south of the Mason-Dixon line.
Hell, put them both in your playlist if you're playing in Boston, as well.

i'll never forget toy caldwell & this is a wonderfully upbeat song to remember him by.
he was part of so many great songs too many to list we all know...but losing 2 brothers in such a short timespan was maybe just too much to get past.
man that thumb took a lickin' and kept on pickin' exclamation point.
peace 2 brother toy caldwell & peace 2 all who read this too

Hey guys I saw him many times! 1st time was when:

We all agreed that he was better than all (3) of
Skynyrd's guitarists combined!! MLC
