  • I love the fact that he has so much energy that his solos are as powerful as the sound of the whole orchestra. He is truly a remarkable pianist!

  • He also added notes at the very end.

  • Marvellous to hear this again,(I heard the live proms broadcast), and altho it confirms my original impression that it's just a little too fast for Brahms' colors & harmonies to "speak," the fantastic élan & fiery passion make their own effect. The orchestra & conductor are the best possible partners, equalling Hough in virtuosity. The whole concert was a marvel.

  • I heard him live in Aspen Colorado playing this concerto and he was on fire--the audiance was screaming and stamping their feet at the end.

  • Just as impressive in person!

  • Wow that is really exciting! I have a lot of details in my head but the simplicity of Mr. Hough's is just exciting!

  • WOW!! Stephen really plays the hell out of my favorite piano concerto

  • Stephen played the fuck outta the Third movement.

  • where's the beginning of mvmt 3?

  • I like how the conductor smiles on the pianist at 9:14 like he was saying I know how much you enjoy playing it :-)

  • Well, I'm not sure I really agree with pianist ending with the orchestra, but I feel that if you're going to do that, he should have kept playing all the way through the entire Tutti and not stopped and then come back in-just saying.

  • shame this isnt complete

  • this is the only interpretation of Brahms's pianoconcerto which I truly like

  • you may also like leon fleischer's recording

  • If Impressionist1 likes this recording, I doubt he'd like Fleischer's recording--it's very, very different. Hough's recording is a unique one, and I really like it. I personally like Pollini's the most, but this was phenomenal.

  • @Impressionist1

    who is that?

  • @Impressionist1 John Ogdon's is also good, but yes, Hough's is wonderful!

  • Very good and very neat:my favourite version with barenboim/Rattle and Katchen/Monteux but why did he add the last notes???They do not exist on the score.....

  • He had just played an incredible piece of music with incredible skill. Letting the orchestra finish the last few bars without him would have been a bit of a let down - he just couln't resist being in on the last note.

  • Yeah but Brahms did not write these notes.Other pianists want to have the last word too in that concerto:Barenboim also added one last D chord..

The same happened with the Lizst concerto n°1:some pianists add an E flat major chord at the end....

  • phrase endings are...rather...tough

  • Isn't Ivan Fischer NOW the director of the National Symphony Orchestra?

  • his solo after he orchestra at 5:04 is amazing

  • In the strictest sense, it technically is not a solo because timpani, trumpet, and horn play alongside, albeit very quietly.

  • Hiromi Uehara of classical music.

  • WOAH! He's on fire! I saw him a few months ago playing this very piece on a piano that belonged to Brahms. I wasn't especially impressed. A bad day perhaps? This is truly phenominal - I haven't heard this movement played better. His recordings aren't selling like hotcakes for nothing!

  • Phenomenal playing!! Great piece of work!!

  • No saben cuanto quisiera aprender a tocar el piano...

No es dificil entender.. pero lamentablemente hay países en donde tenemos urgencias/ los que tengan esa posibilidad tomenla ... Chiclayo-Perú
