But his ropes were static, not bungie cords. While attempting to set a new world record, he tried his jump at night to test it and it failed. Simple as that. I got my info from a climbing mag.

I've been climbing for years and i do plenty of soloing, granted nothing as high or exposed as that, but definetly things with potential death falls. Trad in some respects can be more dangerous than soloing, because in trad you have the illusion of a rope when your gear placements could be a pile of shit and you never solo routes that you may fall on.
