  • i thought this was gonna be a skateboard vid but i was wrong.o well

  • @robdaskater44 yeah...wrong...but come back and take a second look (without that board) and see if there isn't something here that somehow still grabs you.

This is "throwback stuff" probably to someone from the skateboard era, true.

But there might still be something here you would be interested in, despite all that.

The MUSIC for instance. :D This is fantastic stuff, whether you are "boarding," skating, or just grasping at straws, IMO.

  • @Mulsanne917flatout Followup to my own previous post, of course, but I can't find any other option...so: Vince Guaradli's "Christmastime is Here" from that same, fantastic "Charlie Brown Christmas Album" will have to suffice (no it won't just "suffice"--it's the pure ticket, IMO).

Give me this magnificent instrumental every year, leading up to this holiday (regardless of stress)...and find mine a very contented soul.

  • I didn't have any opportunity this year to listen to this CD until very late on Christmas Eve (or maybe it was early Xmas morning). But when I finally did, it was just as good as it ever was, and it brought those tears to my eyes, too, as it always does.

Frankly, I'm almost grateful for it when it happens, because it helps confirm to me that I really am still alive--otherwise I'd sometimes wonder. It's all too easy to just plod along, unfeeling, from one day to the next.

    But for this magic.

  • If they only played Vince Guarldi Trio over the holiday season I would be happy. I am sick of Xmas carols/songs being played to death.

  • Linus: "mmm....needs sugar"

Lucy: "These snowflakes aren't ripe enough; I always wait until January"

    Charlie Brown <3

  • @homestar2112 she never eats december snowflakes. i'm watching that right now!

  • My favorite Christmas song :)

  • What an utterly fabulous musician Vince was.

  • oh my god. that's pittsburgh downtown!!!! where i spent my 4 years of college...

  • A m I the only one who didn't know this was from Charlie Brown?

  • Comment removed

  • Respond to this video... Well...a lot of us know Guaraldi...and a many more know Charlie Brown. A smaller group know both.

But before I could really answer you, I'd need to know how YOU found this masterpiece (?).

[...and "Welcome," too. This is a true "feel-good" place to be....]

  • @LightningDragon1999 YES...BUT its cool...just like the music

  • I'm getting dizzy from watching this!

  • LOL. The kid at 0:13 almost fell.

  • this might be an old video, but, i just found it and i looooooove it. beautiful and excellent music selection.

  • My life will become complete if I learn to play this....

  • @thrillbilly2 :D

This is something VERY worthwhile for which one might learn to play. Do this, and I think you will forever pat yourself on the back for your accomplishment (and as it should be, too!).

Vince...was the among the handful of the very best.

  • i get pumped up to this song

  • you needed to hang behind the tight jeans girl longer

  • @rosskstar thats what i was thinking

I think all of Guaraldi's music, his or not (Fur elise☺) is wonderful, and is on at my house 24/7 christmas, all december

  • What an excellent video! Before I read the description I thought this was an original video for the song, great job!!

  • the name fits the tune, love vince guaraldi. . but if not for the charlie brown specials, neither me nor my kids might never have ever run across such a special thing, vince or peanuts....

  • @papertrail77 ...and my love of jazz was concieved as a child watching peanuts..

  • Another great talent gone before his time. Vince was brilliant.

  • This song always puts me in a good mood,it's a happy smile to me.

  • 4 people don't know how to skate...

  • @ycanada what's weird with me I know how to rollarskate,and rollarblade,but I don't know how to ice skate.

  • @ycanada Great comment!

  • Nice song with a light hearted waltz beat.

  • Great job! This is very cool!

  • I love how this song makes ice skating seem so natural and pretty, but really, most of us just fall on our butts... lol

  • Love this song I see Snoopy dancing in my head and skating about having a ball

  • Vince is Brilliant

  • Wonder if Vince Guaraldi was an influence on Steely Dan. Donald Fagen's piano work in Steely Dan is so similar.

  • @Maoszman Now that you mention I do hear some references.Wonderful thought.

  • I too watch this video over and over at work when I am bored at my desk. I have been for a few years now. Thanks for posting it :)

  • christmas in NY ... if you dont know, its the best, hands down!!

  • I'm jealous. All of these people can skate better than me :(

  • My girl won me over with this song....

  • Such a great song. Makes me feel like I can skate even though I cannot for the life of me.

  • I'm surprised at how many people know these tunes from Charlie Brown but don't know the name of the guy that wrote them. It's a shame really because if you ask me, he has to be one of the greatest composers/players of the 20th century with a balance of simple, catchy melodies and complex, melodic improvisation. Sure other musicians have their arrangements of his tunes, but in my opinion, they don't hold up to the timeless sound of the originals. RIP Vince Guaraldi.

  • @SuaveTito Thank you for mentioning that! People don't realize how wonderful his music is.

  • @SuaveTito Hear, hear! Vince Guaraldi was a musical genius!

  • @japhyryder66 He sure was

  • @SuaveTito I couldn't agree more. Vince Guaraldi was a genius.

  • @SuaveTito Same feeling here, always loved anything Charlie Brown including Guaraldi .

All of his music is pretty amazing.

  • Every winter I ask my Mum to pull out her Charlie Brown book and play this song.

    It's so wonderful!!

It always brightens my mood or anything. :)

  • this is amazing to say the least.

  • So pretty! The visual really makes the music fly! :)

  • Cool. Looks similar to what I remember downtown Cleveland, Ohio, looking like. I think they had a little ice skating area outside, during the winters in the 1980s.

  • CHRISTMAS NEEDS TO HURRY UP ALREADY. I MISS THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

  • and it never gets old.

  • we listen to this entire album like 50 times every december

  • Nice job and a great song for Christmas

  • beautiful song

  • My family loves this video. I think you nailed the old-time nostalgic feeling. Thanks for sharing! It's beautiful.

  • Gosh, I miss Christmas every time I hear this.

  • Wow. Very nice. Here is a dumb question. Was Vince Guaraldi's music used for the soundtrack and scenes from Mister Rogers's Neighborhood (also produced in Pittsburgh) ? I know...really crazy but as I recall they did short vignettes like this accompanied by piano music.

  • that was fred Rogers' wife playing. She's a concert pianist.

  • Aha. Thank you.

  • Johnny Costa wrote the Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood music. The footage was shot @ the PPG rink that is set up every winter in "Dahntahn" Pittsburgh. Guaraldi spent most of his life on the west coast. posted by a "yinzer"

  • Cool. Thanks

  • @delbard1 "yinzer" person who was born & raises in SW PA or has lived the area for 30 years

  • @delbard1 I'm a yinzer as well. Cheers

  • @mrclancydog I live in Pittsburgh itself, you?

  • @delbard1 I gew up there but left about 25 years ago.

  • @mrclancydog where do you live now?

  • Soooo glad that I bought this album when I did. It's the perfect collection of winter songs. Makes you enjoy and reflect at the same time...

  • Really cool video......it sure put a smile on my face......a video of people having fun backed by a real snappy classic jazz tune that really fits the bill...I give it two thumbs up!!!!

  • Just one of the best freakin songs ever! If this doesn't bring a smile to your face, then you're a mean one Mr. Grinch..

  • You're a greasy black banana with a rotten yellow peel, Mr Gri-INCH!

  • What (unbridled) joy in this tune,

    I really love it!

  • it's gonna snow here in oklahoma tonight!!! white christmas!!!

  • ahh lucky! XD

  • Looks like so much fun, wish there was a rink in this area.

    Great music.

  • Snow is blanketing our region right now. Happy winter!

  • I miss skating

  • theres just something magical about this simple vid. love it. doesn't hurt that i think pittsburgh is the greatest city in the world.

  • I went skating at Rockefeller Plaza last night, and this song came on... it was beautiful..

    Happy Holidays!

  • @strokesfan1107 That's awesome! I want to take my daughter there someday.

  • Agh! I wanted to do the same thing! This is awesome though, oh and Merry Christmas!

  • True music.

  • Y'know, I started listening to this song today and I said to myself "you know what'd be great? I video of people skating to the song Skating! How great would that be?"

So, thanks, for making my christmas dream come true (not really, but you get my point hah!)

    Happy Holidays :)

  • cool video, great song

  • LOVE IT!!!

  • "I really like the soft focus and the camera work. It fits the song perfectly. Motion and the dream like pixelated images."

    - Dude, that's not intentional, just a crappy camera and low quality vid.

  • Terrific and classic song for the holiday season. :)

  • I love this song...first time seeing this video, i like it :D

  • Great video set to a great song. Really good job. Plus it shows an awesome night in Pittsburgh.

  • Really glad to see this video back! I'm going to share it on Facebook, if you don't mind.

    (... and Let's go PENS!)

  • Followup to previous post: This video was taken down (or removed) a while back, which is part of what caused me to close my own YouTube account (call it "a contributing factor"--there were others too).

When I saw it again this morning, I opened this new account (using a very similar username to my old one--should be possible to resurrect the old one, if I know the old password, btw....or at least it seems it should to me, but it's no biggie.

That afrorementioned nephew of mine is now eight.

  • Well, this video is an old friend I had thought had passed away. VERY glad to see this one back again, thanks so much

  • i kinda wish you had other footage in there but other then that it looks good for the song!

  • I really like the soft focus and the camera work. It fits the song perfectly. Motion and the dream like pixelated images. Great work. I have never seen any other videos use this effect. The music is one of my favorites. You did a great job!

  • I agree. I'm not generally a fan of the "handheld video camera" technique--it's so often overused in movies and commercials both--but I think it's just PERFECT here.

Skating is very much a personal experience (no one can feel the ice underneath your blades but you), and this video captures that simple truth.

  • This is a great song, but here's a little heads up for you.

My video featured the same song and Universal Music Group took it down.

    Be careful.

  • I'm aware UMG are policing up some of their music (and videos I like) this way.

I can only say I hope they won't.

For my part, I buy up CD copies of "The Charlie Brown Christmas Album" and give them to those I think might appreciate this music.

I do the same with other UMG music too--Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, for example.

To UMG: If you kill off vids and commentary...and enthusiasm...you will also kill off your customer base, both short and long term.

PLease allow me to pass it on.

  • Just listening to this song makes me want it to be christmas again. :D

I used to be able to play this on piano. Not this exact version, obviously an easier version. I still love this song so much.

  • This is the bid outdoor ice rink in NYC right? I can't wait till christmas either. Not the opening gifts but just the tradtions. Watching charlie brown, making raisen bread pudding and gingerbread houses, and drinking eggnog. see all the decor, the carols and the snow. Marshmallow hot coca by the fire. setting up the manger and the tree.

  • Can't wait for Christmas....i always play Guaraldi....my favorite time of year...

  • anybody else get that winter 90's feel when they watch this?

Its like I'm sitting on a Saturday morning, its freezing outside, I have a nice cup of hot chocolate, and the day just couldn't any better.

    THANK YOU A TON DJSKYES

  • To jsnyc40 (Jessica from NYC): I have to apologize for accidentally removing your comment (clicked the wrong thing!) and I also have to say thank you for what you said. It's really nice to know that even though I didn't necessarily have a purpose for making this video, it warms the hearts of those who enjoy the gentle tones of Vince Guaraldi. Thank you again!

    Bill - Pgh

  • Comment from jsnyc40:

DJSkyes: I have commented before, but I also want to say: Thanks so much for posting this. I am bored to death at work and every so often I'll watch this at my desk and it just cheers me up. So you helped somebody and didn't even know it. THANK YOU!!! Love, Jessica in NYC

  • this makes me happy :)

  • Way to go with the music selection! This is one of my favorite songs on the album.

  • Vince Guaraldi's music ROCKS!!

  • sorta takes the pain away doesn't it?

  • I rather liked the sense of motion.

  • listen, pal; i wasn't going for an Academy Award in cinematography here. i'll be completely honest: i was down at that rink that day and figured, "hmm, a video of the skaters would be kinda neat." i happened to have a digital camera with me AT THE TIME, so i took the video. i didn't have a patented SteadyCam or anything like that, i just took the footage out of fun. so don't lay you're fucking hangup on me just because you're an overly judgemental assclown.

btw: thanx for your comment, sir.

  • I happen to like the video! I think it has a very dreamy quality to it. You did a good job, in my opinion, and thanks for posting this song.

  • absolutely, it is a great song and i definately appreciate your positive feedback; thanx again!

  • be a little nicer much? you try keeping a camera steady while ice skating with a non-professional camera. geez, relax.

  • I wouldn't consider myself a professional "non-professional camera operator/ice skater"...I guess I should've went to college for that considering that's what I've always wanted to do for a career choice.

C'mon, now. (aggrivated exhale) Not the best ice skater, especially on chipped ice. The only reason I posted this was because I thought it represented a simple, earthy tone remniscent of old home movies of Christmases past. I figured I'd share this with those who enjoyed that feeling as well

  • oh, don't get me wrong, please! i was replying to the stupid person who called you a s.o.b. because of the motion. i personally love the vid. sorry for the confusion.

  • oh...oops. sorry lol I should've said thanks for your support instead!

  • no worries. :)

  • @DJSkyes It does exactly that, DJ, which is why this is one of my own personal favorite YT vids.

I missed it when it was gone, and I'm very glad to see it back again.

  • thanks for the video; it captures the music perfectly

  • thank u for the compliment...i appreciate it

  • This is a awsome song

    Great video

    5 stars

  • Thanks for the music Mr. Guaraldi

  • merry chirstmas

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS!!... RIP Mr Guaraldi and thanks..

  • beautiful

    merry chirstmnas

  • more people should acknowledge vince guaraldi. this is truly timeless.

  • Beautiful!

  • The "lilt" I hear in this this tune is really quite like nothing else I've heard anywhere.

I suppose this is why it's my favorite.

Odd, perhaps, for someone who otherwise favors "sad" songs...or at least those rather more melancholy.

  • My five year old nephew on double blades: He can't really do much more than travel the local rink holding along the rail, but he has fun.

'scuse me, 'scuse me...'scuse me...'scuse me...'scuse me, 'scuse me (the last group doesn't move though)....

    MOVE IT!!! he shouts....

    :)

  • This is nice, especially in this heatwave! Makes it feel a little cooler now!

  • When people are skating, they are happy!!!!!!

  • And, btw, what a pleasant video!! 5 *****

  • I have the CD and I will admit in front of the world that I occasionally listen to it in the Summertime!!!

I don't care!! This music is just too good to leave on the shelf for the other 11 months of the year!!

  • this is my favorite peanuts song

  • christmas is coming is my fav but not alot of videos on it.

    Skating is good as well.

  • "Skating" from the CB Christmas album is probably my favorite tune of all time, I do think (although I admit I'm always beating this question about too--there are quite a few candidates...).

  • one of the most memorable things about charlie brown, is the music...

  • Yeah, it's both. A great cartoonist tied himself...irrevocably...to a great pianist.

    What's not to like?

  • The first time I really 'got' how marvelous that match-up was -- was during the 'skating' scene in "A Boy Named Charlie Brown". This song gets an orchestral score. In a theater with that kind of sound system -- it was nothing short of genius. "What's not to like?", indeed.
