I'm chinese and i think if you're not an east asian, its pretty much impossible for you to distiguish chinese from korean and/or japanese. Sometimes even I

couldn't tell the nationality of an asian person, especially if he/she was born and raised in america, but its easier to tell the difference if he/ she was raised in his/her native country. I don't know how to explain this, but i think how a person look has a lot to do with where he/ she is raised.

I'll disagree with the comment below me. Pardon the horrible analogy but distinguishing asians is sometimes like distinguishing dog breeds. I study dog breeds and I can identify nearly 300 of them in a split second. I'm black and I have lots of asian friends and study Chinese & Japanese in my spare time as well as listen to asian music. Since I'm exposed to the culture all the time, I have an easier time telling the difference, although I cant tell you what to look for. It's an experience thing.

Learn the continents and regions of Asia. East Asia comprise of: Japs, Chinese, Koreans, and Mongolians.

South-East comprise of: Viets, Cambodians, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines etc.

South Asia comprise of: India, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghan, Sri Lanka, Kashmir, and Bhutan, Bangladesh etc.

The Chinese, Koreans, Japs, share a lot of common features. You will need to look beyond the black hair and the dark eyes. Chinese living in the South tend to be darker or more yellow while the Northerners are Lighter skinned. They also got puffy eyes. They have long faces.

Koreans are the most homogeneous population in the world. They usually have the whitest skin out of all the other East Asians. Their faces are more round or square.

Japs look the most European.

Not true. i'm Cantonese and my whole family is whiter than some white people. I have freckles and natural brownish hair, and my eyes tend towards lighter brown, almost hazel. This is also not an exception to the rule. Some of the lightest and most "caucasoid-esque" looking East Asians come from Canton, China (way in the south). If you're darker you're darker, most Korean men I've seen are very tan.
