Zawinul was the greatest musician of the 20th century. I think that John McLaughlin comes right after. Once I was lucky to meet Zawinul in Copenhagen. He was such a kind person.
What a free soul... And all that after playing "Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire!!!! Maybe, that was EXACTLY what he wanted! That is to say, you can take the world's most exploited, most corny ditty and still FLY with it... IMPROVISE... OPEN NEW DOORS and lead your listeners into new realms of existence. Some scientists would say, it's all about "string theory" . Well, it's something else, that's for sure!
Why can't this be on DVD? Someone could do it AND make money, provided a good choice of other performances through the years and a mocicum of quality in the production. There are enough Zawinul fans to buy it.. Try as I may, I cannot make out the brand of drums Paco is playing. I am very keen to know.
Always loved Joe's solo in the middle section of this tune, he could make machines sing like no- one else! Reminds me that his first instrument was accordion. Also love Gary Poulson's playing, we don't hear enough of him, really a genius.
Very amazaing concert in the Hague, Sunday July 13th, 16.00 pm, the Statenhal was ready for the first great gig of the day: Zawinul Syndicate. There followed Branford Marsalis, Steve Winwood, Youssou N´Dour, Larry Graham Central Station and at last Earth, Wind & Fire. Puuh....a long day, it ended at 01.30 am.
@Bertiklein I never forget. I was there too. After totally being absorbed by my first Zawinul cd "My People" this was my first time I saw Zawinul life on age of 16, and this concert changed my life for good. I also remember the end with EW&F damn, that was so loud! :D
Gran musica, todo un placer.En mi pais Zawinul es un desconocido y es una lastima, que gran maestro.gracias por subir esta belleza.Saludos de Colombia la tierra da las sustancias magicas.
