sorry im just continuing on my first comment..the SD im looking for you to identify is one of the smaller ones at around 0.30 its not the one with the red spot on its sides...its one of the most "circular" looking ones and has a slighty longer red anal fin (but it isnt one of the ones with the black stripe)
snotbog1, you seem to be an expert on silver dollar species and i just purchased 5 for a 75 gallon tank of mine. Im trying to figure out what species they are as they look a little different than the typical ones. From what i can see, you have one silver dollar that looks exactly the same as mine..what species of silver dollar is at 0:30 ? it is just below the chinese hi fin banded shark. it isnt the one with the red spot on its side and it isnt one of the striped ones, or the larger regulars
By the way, what kind of Dollars are the ones with the single black bars down their sides? I have 6 Dollars myself, but mine are only the plain ones with the red fin (like the other ones you have). I'd be interested in knowing - they are beautiful!
also i have 5 silver dollar, 3 rainbow sharks, and 3 giant danios in a 40 gallon. is that over stocked?? i have a top fin 40 and and bio-wheel 150 so i have 350 gallon per hour of filtration? will they live as they age or will i have to upgrade?
That's weird... I have a silver dollar too but I don't see a slash mark crossing vertically through their bodies. Instead, mine exposes two black dots near his gills.
also do you have any tips on trying to make a school? i got one big one one small one and one in the middle. how many more do i need to buy and what sizes? ive got a 55 gallon tank.
yeah i know but do you have any tips on what to feed them so they get as big as yours? i feed them romaine lettuce cucumber flake food and brine shrimp.
these are really beautiful fish, i have 2 really small ones at the moment in with my black ghost knifefish and raphael cat, upgrading from temporary tank at the moment to a 40 gallon i think which should create a lot more swimming space :)
awesome, ive got a quick question if you dont mind. well how many SD's can i have in a 75 gallon tank? and what kind of smaller/medium sized american cichlids can go with them (convict, firemouth, ect.)?
cool thanks sorry for all the questions..but i would have one male firemouth and i also have a blood parrot cichlid that everyone in the house really likes so he's staying too. I also may add a convict if i can. so with these fish already in the tank can i have at least 5 SD's? (if my filtration really effects how many i can have, then i have just over 800 gallons per hour worth of filtration) again sorry for the questions
i recently went into a fish store asking about black bar silver dollars and i was in formed that these fish are hard to come by. I was told that they have to be caught in the wild and are not breed locally like the red hook or standard silver dollars. Was it hard for you to find the black bar silver dollar? and do you remember how much you paid for one when you purchased them?
These fish were purchased in December (perhaps they're seasonal). I've only seen them once in 3 stores during that short window. I paid 20 dollars each for them when they were around 3 inches or less.
beautiful tank mate LOL, im keeping my silver dollars with a jardini saratoga atm buuutt ive got another tank setup ready to move them when the jardini starts to get aggressive

tristanoliva 2 years ago
Good question. I bought mine in December so maybe check online in the fall, early winter. I've only seen them available once around here.
snotbog1 2 years ago

maybe two more, depends what other fish you presently have. These fish get pretty big.
snotbog1 2 years ago
yeah i know but do you have any tips on what to feed them so they get as big as yours? i feed them romaine lettuce cucumber flake food and brine shrimp.

can I fit 3 SD fish (silver dollars) in a 33 gallon
heatran15 1 year ago
I suppose but you might need to upgrade as they grow.
snotbog1 1 year ago
you can really put as many as you want. it all depends on how often you want to clean. upgrade later.

BingX14 2 years ago
depends on how many other fish. I have 9 in my 85 but they're a bit cramped. Almost any S Am cich's will work as long as space allows.
snotbog1 2 years ago
