In case nobody else pointed it out already, the decline of Western's hurt De's career as much as being known as Dr. McCoy. However, I imagined years later that there should have been a recurring role for him on "Designing Women" as a Sugarbaker elder. Stuff like that.
He met Gene Roddenberry! De Kelley found himself typecast as bad cowboys and wanted to play different roles. Gene knew him, liked him a lot and cast him as a character more like the person he was - and Dr McCoy was born!
Did you know that Gene originally wanted to cast him as Spock?! But he ended up playing the role of the good doctor because he could see there would be some humor in the role!
