It probably did. I don't put any sort of insecticide on anything so everything gets eat on a little bit. If you check out my later garden vids you see the okra is doing great!
I made these myself out of concrete reinforcement wire purchased from a local hardware store/lumber company. They'll probably be sitting/laying around out in the lumber yard. Maybe covered, or maybe uncovered. Either way they'll be rusty looking. That's normal. They'll last at least 7 or 8 years. Generally they come in a great big roll which you purchase by the foot. I think these are about 5 feet tall. I wouldn't want them much shorter than that
Just wondering, is Okra an all-year round plant? im thinking of growing some but im not sure if it would be successfull here.
i planted a ton of broad beans today , usually i only plant 6 or so seeds, but after watching your recent vlogs, i planted 3 rows of broad beans very densely.
Okra is *very* much a warm weather crop. It it highly suseptible to frost. I can't plant it here till nearly the first of June because the soil is too cold before then. It's getting a little late in the year in most parts of the country to plant it now. Best of luck with your beans!!!
Thanks Beeke!!! I'll be eating squash and cucumbers in just a few days. I just now did a video of me thinning my okra. (It's more exciting than it sounds, LOL)
Looks like your bean netting is working out great. Ooo, yummy tomatoes! I just love the taste of a home grown tomato. Store bought is just not the same.
Have you always been a veggie gardner? I sure wish someone would have taught me all that when I was growing up.
Thanks Joyce! Ya, I've gardened since I was a kid. I used to help my parents. They don't plant anything anymore though. I can't wait to eat some nice juicy tomatoes! It's going to be a while yet though.
There's just a few weeds but not many. I've got quite a bit of grass clippings down which cuts down on the weeds. Not to mention I've had very little rain so that cuts down on them too. I get a little lax by the end of the season so you'll eventually start seeing some weeds in my garden vlogs, LOL.
Wow I am surprised how big everything is already. You really do have a green thumb! Your hair looked fine just a little wnd blown...lol..It was like you cats were walking along listening to you and looking to see what you was talking about, they are so sweet. :)
I'll be eating veggies before much longer! Yeah, it's hard to resist the urge to straighten my hair out when the wind blows it during a video, LOL. My cats certainly do love it when I'm outside. They pay more attention to me then than when I'm inside:)
Ahh yes, but *I* looked much more pixelated, and as we all know looking ones best is the important thing on YouTube, LOL. I wonder if they make some sort of anti-pixelation vitamins I can take. I think I see an untapped market here for the drug makers!!!
Cucumbers looking good!! Hi Suzy cat! Beans coming along nicely! Squash looks awesome!! Lots of peppers!! Hi Babs! Lots of tomatoes already!! Not a big fan of the okra...Looks like you'll have plenty!! Thanks for the update!! Blessings, Grams
Thanks Rory! Sometimes even when I don't have anything to do in the garden I'll go out there for a little while just because my cats love to follow me out there so much:)
Great update Robert and nice to see the cats too, they love getting into your garden vlogs. The beans look very happy on that large mesh, much less work than all that stringing. Cheers, Lesley
Thanks Lesley! Last year of course I used sisal twine to support the beans. Since then as we all know I have become MeshMan, LOL. SisalTwineMan just doesn't have the same ring, LOL.
When you thin out the okra, do you just replant elsewhere or throw it away? Why do you need to thin it out? And, Why is the okra so far away from the other plants?? It's kinda sad.. segregation! *pout*
I just toss out the ripped out plants when I thin it. (Yep, I'm a cruel gardener:) The plants just grow lots bigger when they aren't crowded. They probably live longer too. I can't plant it with the rest of the garden because there's a disease there that the okra isn't resistant to and most of it would die before it got 2 feet tall. It's the same thing tomatoes used to get (vermiculum wilt or something like that) before resistance was bred into them. I'm sure they prefer segregation to death:))
Mine is very demanding. "Feed me, water me, weed me, Brrr, I'm cold, please cover me up." Sheese, shut up already Mr. Garden. What am *I* getting out of this relationship? Oh yeah, veggies. OK, here's another drink of water.
Thanks Judy! I almost didn't plant a garden this year but in the end I decided that I really don't eat enough veggies most of the year so I'm sure it's very good for me to try and overcompensate for 2 or 3 months, LOL.
Quite a change from the last video I watched of your garden. Your plants are loooking amazingly healthy. I'm especially impressed with the leaves of the pepper plants. Mine are a bit anemic but I might be able to turn it around with a little fertilyzer. Your squash plants seem to be larger than any I have ever seen in my garden. Wow! Good job on the vid by the way. I'm looking forward to seeing the okra fully grown. I have never grown that before and actually have never seen a plant.
I've heard that a *little* bit of sulphur is good for peppers, although I'm uncertain if it's for sickly plants or for helping them flower and fruit better. Your supposed to clip the tips off of a few matches and work into the ground near your plants. I've tried it twice. One of those times I went overboard and used too many match heads and made matters worse. The other time I couldn't tell whether it made any difference or not. I can't remember how much I used. Cont.
Actually my peppers aren't quite as healthy as they were last year, but really they're about average. Last year was above average. My squash will get a fair amount bigger than this even. I'm looking forward to seeing my okra fully grown too! It's seldom in the grocery stores and when it is it's overpriced and of poor quality.
I wish I could send you some rain, Blink, we've had more than our share this year but your garden looks very well so far -- maybe the rain will come your way soon.
Thanks for the thought liz! Maybe I should try to get TubeGranny to watch this video he/she's all about making people moist, LOL. I was watering every other day, but have decided that every third day is good enough since at least our heat wave has broken. We had a couple of weeks in the 90's and now it's upper 70's low 80's.
Thanks AZ! A little while ago we got thunder and lightening and two drops of rain and then it was all over. It was quite exciting while it lasted, LOL. I need to empty the dust out of my rain gauge tomorrow.
Ahhh it looks GREAT Blink! I'll have to show you my gardens (which are mostly perennials but hey). I threw in some tomato plants and one cucumber and one pepper for good measure. LOL.
Next year I am going to guilt my brother into tilling a nice garden plot for me.
Thanks Maria! I'll look forward to seeing your garden video!. Good luck on the guilting your brother thing, LOL. No I'm afraid I won't be going to SouthTube. I have a bad back and sitting and driving is the absolute worst thing for it.
Thanks PB. I think this is the driest summer I can remember. It seems like ALL the isolated showers are just missing us. It'll thunder and lightening and 2 drops of rain will fall and that will be it till the next day. On Saturday the forecast was for a 70% chance of showers. We still didn't get any measurable rain.
looking good! I still haven't gotten any showing on my bell peppers, but I've finally got a jalapeno the size of the tip of my little finger! I just planted beans (bush green) today, which, from what the package said, was the best time to plant them. I'm currently researching things to do with zucchini, since it looks like I'm going to have enough to feed a small country!
Thanks Slorge! Ya, from everything I've ever heard, zucchini can be pretty prolific. I've never planted any. I like squash so much better than zucchini there's not much point in it for me.
Great garden vid, Robert! I'm glad you got the netting this year for the beans to climb instead of redoing the thing you did last year, which seemed a pain.
Wow, that's a BIG garden! You really like peppers, don't you? I want to see the peppers growing on the tomatoes and the okra! ;) Well cone - just had to tease you a little.
Actually I only eat a few peppers. I give most of them to my dad. I have no idea how he's able to eat so many. It would kill me to eat that many, LOL.
