He did die. There were 2 tv movies. The first one was when he was on druggs. At the end laura's voice says albert became a doctor. The other movie when he is sick is all about his dying. They dont show him dead, but they make it 100% clear that he dies. That was on a year later. Obviously the writers of the first movie hadnt known he was going to die in a later movie so they ended the first one with him becoming a doctor.

He was smoking in Mary's blind school and burned it down on accident. Andy's mom got killed in the fire along with Mary's baby. He feels really guilty and doesnt want to go to the funeral which Pa is asking him to go to. (Pa doesnt know what he has done)
