And whatever happened to the saying "ESP or corrective driver aids, no matter how advanced, is no replacement for driver attentiveness or common sense?"
The idiots who work for CR who deemed this vehicle unsafe for operation should be forced to resign from their positions immediately. This is just another plan devised by Americans to attempt to rid the country of Imports because they are killing domestic sales, because they are better cars perhaps? Obviously if you push a top heavy SUV in such a manner (I don't know who would) the tail is going to break away. But try telling that to sue happy Americans.
I don't know if americans are really so dumb to believe that this car is doing bad. It is like blame the glass of water that it splashes water around when dropped off the table.
dude... there is no such thing as stability control stopping a car that's going sideways. Not even Ferraris can't just swing 90degrees with that speed then all a sudden recover to straight. I guess every SUV they tested like that would fail their test, accept the European ones since most magazine testers are fanboys and believe they set the trend for "cool"? Media man, that's whats so screwy about America. Always lying to the stupids.
Hahaha.. So they loosen up the stability control to provide more feel and you go around telling people not to buy this?? Jesus Christ, do the same test in a Ford Explorer and find yourself doing 6 goddamn flips.
If you want to see a test that is really necessary if you want to sell a car to the public, then you might be interested to watch the following:
/watch?v=gcZBNJbu3aQ or
watch?v=Um-XlKerWvA&feature=related (almost banned by Mercedes ^^)
If the Lexus or other cars fail this test, then you may argue with "don't buy". Until then: Stop manipulating people's minds and killing reputation of companies which are highly appreciated by consumers!!! I mean, that's why they sell, more right?!!?
to me (as an european) it is rather obvious that the Americans are F**king jealous on the succes of the Japanese car builders. No government support needed and top quality. Things Americans can only dream about. Toyota is well known for its quality and advanced technology, which are words Americans only know from asian products.
Wow, the blame Toyota bandwagon is not led by CR. I am soo glad I have never and will never give you any of my money. What a BS report. You all should be ashamed to post crap like this. Many SUV's would flip and have flipped under these conditions. The 460 just does a power slide, It is called drifting!
I'd say they're going too far against Toyota for an unit that, perhaps, has been made with an actual singular problem. If you take plenty of other vehicles, like GM SUVs, you'll see much more worse things...
@Zirrpo I know its like people don't even drive their cars nowadays, less and less control is being taken away from the driver. I will admit in some situations its nice to have it that way though =P
I'm just trying to figure out what they want? A truck that will push all the way through a corner and put you in the ditch anyway? they're SUV's and they weigh 6000lbs learn how to drive.
THE CAR MIGHT HAVE BEEN GOING OVER 60MPH TRYING TO TURN LIKE THAT!!
why dont yu try some other bigger suvs with a high ground clearance like that and see if yu get that much body roll have yu seen top gear doing the van challenge? RICHARD HAMMOND LITERALLY flipped over you lucky a heavy suv like this didnt.
think about this
would you rather have the rear end slip sideways or just flip?
consumer report saidthat the Lexus here loses control MORE than the other cars to a dangerous level. All the toyota/lexus fans here complaining about this should go & hang themselves.
-> If I have the means, I will do everything I can to own a pre-recalled GX460 (aka. GX F). That puts the SPORT in SUV. Not even Porsche, Land Rover, & BMW can't produce any more EPICNESS!!!
-> Hops on boulders AND drifts!? Perfect!!!
-> Whoever subjected to this "stupid" recall are wimps.
This is not even close to real world. When you are coming off an off ramp to fast you don't just lift your foot off the gas pedal and sit there. You hit the brakes. Therefore it is not real world
Toyota finally made a suv that isn't boring and they call it a safety hazard? I vote keep the current set up and let Darwinism take care the morons that can't drive.
electronic stability control helps the driver but the driver infact is the moron who would get in the situation anyway and should know how to get out of a skid with out it.
Bullshit video, I don't like Lexus but blaming them for unsave handling in a corner with a speed that would make an American SUV roll over is noncence
@HyperTeHK2 What is non-sense is the amount of ignorance it would take for somebody say that. Consumers reports does this test in all SUVs, even the American ones, and none of them had done this badly in the test. The problem is the stabilty control system isn't working as it should. Its kinda like having a saftey net that colaspes as you lean against, causing you to get tangled and break your neck. Although you might not break your neck, the safety net defies its purpose as does the ESP here.
As if anyone is going to drive it like that. What a stupid claim. I bet any SUV would act the same way if driven like that. What about older SUVs without Stability Control and all the fancy computing equipment built into them? If driven like that, the laws of physics still apply no matter what. I'd still buy one of these trucks. Maybe I can get a good deal on one now!
It would help to have a comparison video, because it looks more like the driver is driving recklessly than the car has a problem.
Look at the brake lights: THEY'RE NOT ON! This driver is just going like mad for no good reason. Is this seriously a safety test? Driving at insane speeds into a corner without stepping on the brakes? IT'S THE ONE ON THE LEFT, ASSHOLE!
Without a comparison video I'd say this hoopla is bogus.
This car is perfect. Just lower it and boom drift a.o.k . Been trying this with 240, 350, and GTRs. Thank God for this because everytime I try to parallel park at school at 60 mph in my Ford Suv I always have to put in an extra work into the steering.
UNNECESSARY PANIC! C.R. needed some views/exposure or something...
Come on! A couple of years ago every car would handle like this! Stability control is something that makes people feel overly confident when driving at high speed. It is not always a good thing! For example if you're used to this kind of electronic correction, you may wind up dead one day if you overestimate traction if you drive someone else's car.
Otoh it is weird that this vehicle's STC is not functioning as it should...
As the Japaneses would say "Super Dreeefto!" In my opinion the Lexus GS is wayyyyy over priced for a luxury SUV. I'll much rather get an Infiniti FX or EX.
This even isn't close to real world! If your coming off an off ramp to fast you don't lift your foot off the gas and just sit there you hit the brakes.
So its a safety risk because the stability control won't bail out the driver 100% of the time?
Under this logic, all cars without Stability control are unsafe. This is complete and utter bullshit.
My perspective: Great drifting CR!! I didn't know a GX would hold a slide like that, but that's impressive! Toyota/Lexus ECS and VDIM systems have always intervened TOO EARLY. It's about time they tone down these systems to let you have some fun.
Hmmm... if you buy a buss, the risk is that it handles as a buss... if you buy a SUV you may end up with a car that handles as a SUV... surprised??? Well buy some other car! This attitude towards cars in general points at a direction where all cars is dangerous in some situations... well, thats the laws of physics, and they cant be altered... short version, don't sell hard to drive cars to stupid people and why not have harder drivers license tests instead of hunting manifacturers like this?!?!
MORONS. This "safety issue" is completely normal. It's called physics. Maybe instead of complaining about Toyota, consumer reports should REPORT ON THE CONSUMER'S IDIOCY for not being able to handle the vehicle they purchased.
WAY TO GO. Yet more useless safety issues and warnings geared towards incompetent drivers.
One has to wonder how much of this is really designed to dissuade people from purchasing imported cars in this time of economic downturn in the US auto industry. Recalls, fines, safety warnings, etc all in an attempt to break the paradigm that Japanese vehicles are a better buy.
this is dumb and they are dumb. Try doing that in a JEEP or any SUV doing 60mph as well. Give me a break ... get of Toyota's nuts fools. Just b/c the governments own cars flopped doesn't mean you should rape the people doing a good job.
This is a joke! There is news with a malice in all months from Toyota. But only in USA! This is because of that only because they do not lose weight it amerikai cars. And the a lot amerikai believes this untruthful news. These are fictitious rumours. Lies. How the Toyota, Lexus should not buy it because of that. There are mistakes like this on the world with these cars nowhere, only in the USA!!! Reasonable peoples! Wake up!!
This safety risk is the second reason I wouldn't buy this SUV. The first is, it's FUCKING UGLY! Looks like if Pontiac still made the Aztek, this would be the 2010 model! The only Toyota/Lexus cars I like are the Lexus LFA & LS450. You can have the rest of the other melted jellybean looking crap they make.
Yeah, I'm not sure I see the problem here. If you drive a two-and-a-half ton luxury SUV like it's a sports car, it's pretty obvious that something is eventually going to go awry.
So if you drive like a moron and have no concept of physics, weight transfer, personal responsibility or reality don't drive this wonderful legitimately offload capable luxo Landcruiser.
PANIC!!!!! It can drift!!!! OMFG Latte in my lap!!!
Top Gear approve! Honestly, I've done this in an SUV and while it looks and feel scary, as long as you let the computer handle it, you'll be fine. It's not like the thing actually rolled over eh? But this is CR so meh
With all due respect to Consumer Reports, no auto enthusiast gives a rat's ass about their opinion. They don't recommend cars that don't have stability control. Try this logic: rather than the car being responsible for the driver's safety, the driver him/herself should be. Just because a car oversteers does not make it unsafe. In fact, many would argue that it makes it more engaging.
Yeah man awesome, who needs seat belts, anti-lock brakes, traction control, airbags, or crumple zones. If only drivers would be responsible for a car's safety rather than electronic gizmos.
And of course when I buy my GX 460 I'm looking for a "more engaging" experience which involves going sideways when I left off the accelerator during a turn.
When you "buy your GX460", I would expect that you would not be idiotic enough to lift up the accelerator when doing into a turn at high speed. If you're stupid enough to do that and the car oversteers, well, then I believe you deserve your fate if you get into an accident because you clearly just don't know anything about the physics of driving.
@motormusique The average driver on the road is no enthusiast. In my opinion most should not even be out there driving. We need cars to be smarter (stability control, ABS, Traction control, lane departure warnings, dopler cruise controls, etc) to make up for all those morons who refuse to keep an eye on their blind side, use their turn signals, or open their door without dinging the car next to them (still waiting for the feature that stops the last one!).
Wow, this is not supposed to happen with stability control on... It's almost as if the e-brake was applied! I know it wasn't applied, but I will say this... Toyota has been getting screwed up the arse lately!
Stop blaming Consumer Reports, guys! They're just doing their job.

So you can power slide it. I call that a positive.

@motormusique

@nedperfel

@motormusique that is stupid that is like saying that cars shouldn't be outfitted with airbag because people need to learn how to drive safely.

Stuck accelerator, non-working brakes, and now stability control that lets you drift. GG Toyota

Do these people want to sell Ford very much with GM?
Toyota beating continues through all eternity.

why did consumerreports not use the brake? if i was the avg driver going way too fast into a corner, i would brake...
s2001s 1 year ago
Handles nicely with that much overspeed, i give gas in that kinda situation to strigten up.

Aren't most off-ramps/on-ramps banked to allow for high speed travel around curves? The majority I've seen are.
stratfordbaby 1 year ago
Wow, this is not supposed to happen with stability control on... It's almost as if the e-brake was applied! I know it wasn't applied, but I will say this... Toyota has been getting screwed up the arse lately!
