This is not illegal, you are confusing it with the fumblerooski, where the ball is actually bounced off the ground by the center, this is an illegal snap now. This version called the puntrooski is still used today. The Carolina Panthers just ran it for a touchdown on Sunday
#56(the one who chased him all the way down, was the first to notice it. But not quite quick enough :p This 1988 team lost their first 31-0 against Miami and then won every single game after.
The puntrooskie is illegal now. That is the reason they do not do it anymore or why no other team does it. It was not illegal when they did it. But it is illegal now.
@REIDTV Because when it is snapped to the guy in the back he clearly walks up to the guy in front of him and hands the ball to him thru his legs,.. It is considered an illegal forward lateral. He is not passing it to him. He clearly walks up to him and hands the ball forward to him which is clearly a forward lateral which is now illegal and therefore backs up my claim as to why it is illegal and you will never in the history of college ball ever see that play again.
Clemson was the most dominant team in the ACC in that era, until that play I'll prolly haunt them forever because look at them now they are a mediocre team with a sub .500 record just about every yr.
I remember this play because while Leroy Butler was running up the field the freaking local station (KLST) weather man (Roger Something) cut into the game to announce that there were severe thunderstorms in the area. I was pissed, but he did apologize for interrupting the game. Next thing I know Florida State is inside the Clemson 5 yard line. This was sheer guts, and FSU deserved to win that game.
If there's no blocking up front on the special teams, this would only work on a 4th and 2 or 3, our guys arent quick enough. We don't have enough athletes to rush it down the field like this enough to be significant.
I've been a lifelong fan of your nemesis, UM (since 1984), and I've wondered the same thing for both of our teams. When Bobby Bowden first got to Tallahassee, you could tell he was hungry to win, to put FSU on the map as a legitimate NCAA football power. After winning two NCAA titles, Bowden grew more conservative in his play-calling, which hampered FSU's attitude and mindset on the field. I liked what I saw from Jimbo Fisher last year. Let's see if he can sustain it.
@mjabate It wasn't Bowden that got conservative in his play calling. The fall of FSU came when the play calling was up to Jeff Bowden. If you look at the year to year statistics, the offensive output greatly decreased after Mark Richt left for UGA. Bowden had this philosophy later in his career: Hire the best people and let them do their jobs. Unfortunately, he didn't make the best hire with his son.
@72BlackonBlack jeff was so out of his depth, it wasn't even funny. and they had to pay him to leave. it just pisses me off to even think about it. and you couldn't tell bobby he had made a mistake. between jeff bowden and chris rix, it amazes me we even won any games with them there.
Greatest play call ever, total guts to call that.
Also, Butler was better off getting tackled and NOT scoring because FSU was able to run out most of the clock. Had he scored on the puntrooskie, Clemson still has plenty of time to come back and tie.

One of the gutsiest playcalls of all-time. 3 minutes to go in the game, and if Clemson stops us there they win it.

Tom Osborne ran that play against Missouri in 78 I am thinking. Didn't the NCAA outlaw plays like those?
Bones68charger 3 years ago
fake punts?
Do you even watch football?
LSUcHamp606 3 years ago
Not fake punts, I am talking about plays like this... puntarooskie, fumblerooskie etc. and yes I watch football esp college football all the time.
Bones68charger 3 years ago
The fumblerooskie was banned because it exploited the fumble rule to use linemen as ball carriers. As far as I know, the puntrooskie is still legal.
aznravechild6i9 3 years ago
The puntrooskie is just a snap to the upman
tjmcdoug 3 years ago
No, it was a snap to the farthest-back of the upmen, who then handed off the ball to the guy in front of him, BETWEEN THAT GUY'S LEGS.
Statalyzer 2 years ago
Well I was just saying it like that because it doesn't do anything illegal so it wouldn't be illegal
tjmcdoug 2 years ago
Greatest play call ever, total guts to call that.
Also, Butler was better off getting tackled and NOT scoring because FSU was able to run out most of the clock. Had he scored on the puntrooskie, Clemson still has plenty of time to come back and tie.
