  • I AM NOT A NUMBER! I AM A FREE MAN!

  • LOL, the first minutes of this part actually underline all i've written in my comments on part 4

    On another note: what geniuses these people in power are;

1st guy: "i've read this theory that says all people are essentially selfish and dishonest, how can we improve society with this in mind ?"

2nd guy: "I know. We should abolisch all regulatory instances, slim down goverment and give people who deal with a lot of money more freedom, that will reduce corruption and improve equality!"

  • after freud and jung it seems bizarre to compare humans or genes with computers or machines.

  • The obsession with statistics by these institutions, and it is everywhere, reminds me of The Wire. Individuals don't count or really exist, they're expendable numbers inside a political machine, a criminal outfit or the police force. We're obsessed with these numbers because it's an easy way to pretend we're doing something about issues rather than looking at the hard and politically unpopular realities.

  • so called market economy is maybe bigger collective lie than socialism was... neither of them has ever existed...true believers of those systems are pain in the ass, they are patholocigal liars

  • Mercinary society- who cares just lie- money money money- LOADS A MONEY!

  • children should live in socialist society let the adults compete

  • lmao, the free market. lmao

  • 6:19 is so funny :D .sums up the whole idea

  • @mihir1310 Its rather ridiculous, isn't it!??!

Blaming failure of the state on free markets!

  • I am not a robot, I am a human being!

  • the only thing to glean from this is that the Youtube comments system is flawed

  • How is the whole 'target' culture any different to bureaucracy? Or is Curtis presenting a false dichotomy to spur the story on?

  • I suppose a bureaucrat can look at things both on a case by case basis, or as a wider picture provided he or she is good enough. Whereas the targeting looks at the numbers and the numbers can be cooked.

  • Fascinating. While New Labour got these ideas from the US, they've never been applied to this extent here in government. But of course the US private sector economy is much more free-market oriented.

  • This is a great account of what happened in the UK.

    .... And the US?

  • Epic FAIL!

  • I must say i'm glad i never voted Labour. The real comparison is not between big government or small government but between dumb power and smart power.

  • Its quite funny how we invent systems and then we get enslaved by them. And i am shocked that less than four thousand people watched this important and informative documentry while some other stupid videos on youtube is being watched by millions of people

  • I think you should take some "Soma", it will make all those bad feelings go away. Remember, "One cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments"(Aldous Huxley).

  • @s2156785 A real gauge of how the majority thinks. I'd feel much better if this video had 127 million views like the handicap lip syncer..

  • @s2156785 leaders do more work most of the time. were not all the same. if a video has millions of views chances are its entertainment and not education. 11,627 views is normal for a smash hit that teaches self empowerment like these vids teach of demonstrate. Open a Green & Fair Trade business and grow wealthy via being honorable... in time quite your regular job if you care to, but go cautiously.. YOUR THE CHANGE WE NEED!

  • @s2156785,

I agree, but being educated doesn't really mean understanding the world or being interested in actually how it works.

A very good series, The Trap, am watching it now, and it's resonating with me.

  • "...The gov'ts response was to introduce even more mathematical levels of management."

Sounds like a typical Gov't response to a problem. Compound the issue while denying it exists in the first place! XD

  • Man, I can't believe people actually thought this "target" system was going to work like they thought it would. Then achieving "targets" becomes the priority, not actually helping people. It's worse than the old bureaucracy! I'm no economist or politician, and yet I can see that much! :-\ How sad.

  • @datalal624 Sounds to me like an issue any power hungry manager would do. "My theory isn't wrong, it's my workers who are abusing the system!"

Since you're watching this movie, why not deepen your thinking beyond "government = bad"

  • Um, I don't recall saying anything like "government = bad". From what I remember of this movie, the British gov't simply made a colossal mistake in policy-making, which was borne out of misinformation from science and psychology at the time (it's been a few months since I've seen this doc, so forgive me if I don't have all the facts down). Anyway, I'm not sure why you think I had such a black-and-white view of governmental workings, but if it was my cynicism, then my apologies.

    Take care.

  • I am not a number, I am a free man!

    Patrick MacGoohan in The Prisoner.

A society, a population reduced to statistics is in fact anti individualistic.

The communists and Fascists Would have loved this!

  • fuck me I see this all the time in hospitals in Ireland. The Wire is very good on this when it comes to clearing homicide rates and the extent to which people will go to create the illusion of progress in such systems.

  • Targets? Sounds like Soviet Union back in the days.

  • Yup, how can anyone possibly call it "market" ?

  • Anarchy would necessarily result in chaos. Modern man is a disgusting little dwarf creature and these videos demonstrate this. Modern society has many disgusting elements and the degree of control is something one could hardly believe possible. It is disgusting. The UK in particular where people are obsessed with the beckhams is a philistine culture. But still modern man being what he is I prefer them being obsessed with victoria than not being bound by laws.

  • unless you have detailed knowledge of experiments that show this to be true, there's a high possibility you're wrong wrong wrong. 'The UK in particular' strikes me as something someone not very well travelled would say. I agree the people are disgusting, but they are also beautiful.

  • nobody seems to want anarchy. i think this is because they think the word means 'chaos' and not just a system without leaders. Small self governing communities...

  • Not everything in life can be quantified, but when you are trying to translate everything to monetary value to put it up for sale, this kind of thinking takes over. The obsession with numerical job evaluations has caused all workers to find ways to be "good" employees per the targets but without any compassion or sense of service. I see it all the time in my own field.

  • he says it's more about game play theory developed from poker games and the cold war. we are meant to fit into a statistic and behave predictably. cheers.

  • @hollywoodartchick

Exactly that quantification is the problem, not things like inequality (which this film declares a problem in itself even though it is the result of quantification as well).
