I loved this game, but just when I thought I saw the weirdest creature, BAM! here comes a floating skull with a horn shooting fireballs at me. Some weird-ass creatures in this game.
sometimes i feel like Sega "respected" its users a bit too much...in that they made dozens upon dozens of impossibly hard games - most without passwords, cheats, or save games. I mean most of us were kids playing those games and we rarely had the time or patience to achieve the mastery needed to beat this POS games like Alf. ;P Phantasy star was the game changer tho...Shinobi was too damn hard! did After burner ever end??
I once did the final boss and I was one hit away from winning with a high jump slash tech to his face but one of the rocks kill me, and I was on my last lives and I was so pissed and still am damn those rocks
I always died when I got to the final boss!! :( But I never did the trainig stage where you got the jump-an'-slash power up XD But now I know how to beat this prick once and for all!! :D
Dude...this game was hard...took me a loooong time to finish after learning to have patience with this game. Once you get your power-ups...you have to know when to use them! The Bezerker is great!
I'v played all the so called tough games on the playstation xbox and have completed them all!!!....but NO GAME gav me as much trouble as this game did in the 1980's with its sheer test of skill!!!!! all other games fail in comparison to this!!! There wont be and cannot be another game of this calibre and it is so addictive!!!
The best game ever !!!The music when they show Kenseiden walking on the map after completing a level used to giv me such a high! This is one where even the uploader had some difficulty with! It took me 4 yrs to complete esp losing to the bosses near the end
the only trick i remember from this epic fawking game is that when u lost all your lives and the screen was saying "Game Over" you had to press really fast : Up,Up,Down,Down,B !! Then you immediatly were starting from the point you lost your last life!! i dont even remember how we found it!! lol
Wasn't it written in the instructions? Or am i thinking of After Burner???
Anyways, this was probably the 2nd game my dad bought me for the SMS! Spent WAY too many hours on it and i still think its an amazing game! Amazing speed run by the way!
I bought this game at Toys R Us in 5th or 6th grade... I'd never heard of it but the box looked really good. Hell yeah, this game is awesome, so I wasn't disappointed! great blend of action with some 'adventure' components.
this is the type of game Sega needed to make into a franchise... sequels? promotion? it beat the pants off NES games at the time, graphics and music especially.
talbot1939-thanks for this vid. I loved this game! I was skimming through the vid, so I'm not sure if you did or not. But did you happen to jump on top of the head of one of the buddha statues? There is a hidden room in one of them.
You can play these games again, using an emulator on your PC. FreezeSMS is a sega emualtor. Romguy com has many emulators and roms for many consoles and ole computer like c64/128.
This was the first game I got on the SMS and one of the first that I beat. It was also one of the hardest. Took me like 3 hours back in the day. Those training stages are brutal.
Crazy props to you for that speed run. Great skillz dawg!
talbot, or anyone else here, can you guys please clue me in on why great games like this back in the 80s never had a save game or password feature? I mean c'mon! Can't the game's programmers tell not everyone can do this in one sitting?!?!
true, but who the hell would want a game without that? would you want to always have to play a game back from the very beginning and spend hours getting to where you were last time? what if something bad happened like the power died in your house or you accidentally hit reset. that would blow.
the evidence of this game being played fully in 20 minutes shows that while there was no password or save, you could conceivably finish it in a few hours, if you took your time. that's not much longer that people might sit today for a game.
For a save system, yes, you need a battery and it bumps up the cost. Battery-backed saves were a big feature at the time for precisely this reason. But passwords don't need a battery, they're purely a programming task. I can think of a good few reasons why they wouldn't have them though, and I may well do a video about this!
(Also; check me out, resurrecting a 2 year old thread!)
@aawood I guess I inferred creating a password system would increase the development costs . I can only guess but a lot of SMS games would have much smaller budgets than their NES counterparts. Make a video! I like retro games as u can guess :)
Thank you so much for this, Kenseiden was one of the first games I got for my master system back in 1987. (besides Hang On/Safari Hunt which were built in) I have not seen the full game in almost 20 years. I finished it back in the day, but it wasnt a cake walk like you just made it, nice job.
you sure it was '87, the title screen says this game was copyright in 1988 unless you were allowed to do that ahead of it's true release date. anyway I saw this for sale at Best Dept. Store back when I was a kid. I wanted to get it but took Shinobi instead.
Youtube doesn't allow me to upload videos above 11 minutes in length so I try to squeeze the action game runs into 2 parts of 10-11 minutes each. If I had done the bonus level I'd have to add a third segment only a minute long so it wasn't worth it.
When I was younger, I often played this game! But I couldn't beat the final boss, the guy with the golden mask, he was driving me friggin' nuts! The ***hole!:P
such a wonderful game and i love they used monsters from japanese folklore. the one that creeped me out was the blue hand-like fellow tossing dolls at you
Thanks...my plan is to run as many SMS games as I can. I'm starting out with the games I owned as a child cause they're much easier for me...Zillion 2 is next :)

Was it tool-assisted or have you done all that in a row ?
Someone said here that Shinobi was too damn hard, but it was child's play compared to Kenseiden.

I'm sorry, but isn't it saying "No, you can't has?" What a game...

Great gameplay, pal. Hey, have u guys noticed that the music changes every time you approach the waterfall (and changes again when you go away)?

@natalironaldo It's because it uses one of the sound channels to do that sound, and stops the music playing on that channel.

Money!
It would have cost a lot more to spend time creating a password system for the game.
Batteries made the games more expensive. Phantasy Star was the first Sega game I bought with battery backup, it cost $80 20 years ago.
