  • I enjoyed that... even the fag break.... and the ha ha....

  • Whats that I wonder? Its awesome is what it is!!

  • so good

  • i took a smoke break with ya! >.<

  • this video reminds me of how much i am unable to do... how sad

  • dinte smike

  • Excellent ,saw you at the wirral guitar festival years ago, supporting Woody mann..

  • I was so p***ed off because I thought I'd lost this vid. So glad I found it again. It was what first made me tinker with DADGAD.

  • I came here because this title is awesome.

  • @mitchellanthonydillo /facepalm. He said it in the description..

"The guitar played here is a 'Catfish Keith Ragtime' (made by UK luthier Tony Revell in 1994) which blends in well with the conservatory backdrop!"

  • your voice sounds like Johnny Cash, ahh and great play man

  • Can't get enough DADGAD! Lovely playing and a great vid!

  • absolutely mind blowing ,,,nice rolls and ya trully are awsome on that ,,!!

  • @philhare just a joke, I couldn't help but giggle when I notice them

  • @melee4life I think the more offensive the garb, the more people will listen to the music. Clearly I'm wrong ha ha!! Cheers

  • those jorts are offensive

  • @melee4life its a music video

  • how much do you charge for lessons!

  • @eyeshandy Hi there, £20-30 depending on location and circumstances.

  • I don't know why he insist you shouldn;t strum in dadgad. stan rodgers did a lot of great strumming in dadgad

  • @antippas DADGAD sounds fine strummed, but to maximise the effect of open and 'drone' strings, fingerstyle playing will get more out of the tuning generally. When you talk of Stan Rodgers do you mean the guy that wrote 'The Lock Keeper?'

  • @philhare

when i play in altered tunings i often tie a small piece of string around the guitar strings so that the notes i play ring more openly than the open stings adding to the depth while strumming.

  • proper playr..so many wannabes on youtube..its good to find some that can actually teach me something...thx bro

  • saw you when you came to Lymm...absolutely brilliant! was especially impressed when you composed a song, on the spot, from random phrases suggested by the audience...when are you coming back to Lymm?

  • @ganderblast Cheers m'dear. Hopefully I'll be back at Lymm in 2012 depending on how Bernard gets on with the bookings.

    All the best

    Phil

  • what guitar is that?

  • @spenjax1111 Tony Revell 'Catfish Keith' Ragtime - now owned by my daughter. I think it's mentioned in the blurb.

  • Thanks for the helpful hints. When I first heard Davey Graham playing the traditional

Irish tune - 'She moved through the Fair' - which was the first tune/song ever recorded in dadgad - I knew I had to learn this tuning which he introduced to the music World. It's a pity that other musicians who later borrowed this tuning - got all the kudos whilst Davey himself was more or less forgotten. Your lesson here is of great help and appreciate your uploading. 'Cheers'.

  • @sonorgeek44 no problem man. Thanks for your comments. You can't beat a nice smoke!

    All the best

    Phil

  • king

  • Astounding player..great teacher. You remind me of Martin Simpson

  • Nice one Phil, great advice!

  • A very good display of the various merits of this tuning. Nice.

  • Phil, I have been playing drop D lately, just the low D. Last night reading on the john, I saw DADGAD. Tuned my guitar, played for about 3 mins then the wife came with a cup of coffee, so look it up on the computer. I enjoyed a smoke with you while watching your video. Very nice. I refuse to waste a good cup of coffee, but can hardly wait to finish it so I can go mess around a bit on the old D 28. Thanks for the video...very inspiring. Thanks for sharing...

  • Hi Phil - glad to meet another Revell guitar owner - good stuff. Jonny

  • Saw this video on a guitar forum. It has convinced me to immediately have a go at the tuning. Great great playing and inventiveness. Really inspiring!

  • Thanks Phil. I've always admired it but have never been able to grasp it. You've just opened that door for me and I thank you sincerely. You're a great teacher. BK.

  • i would love to hang with you for a few hours phil....you have great musicianship and a very fun way of teaching!

i bring the merlot and the smokes, and you bring the guitar?

  • Sounds good. When are you free?!

  • Hi mate,

Thanks for your comments. Get me over to Florida and I'll happily do some gigs with you - seriously.

    All the best

    Phil

  • I learned about Dadgad about 15 years ago. I learned to play Black mountain side the jimmy page version, then the original, so much fun. Now I am a jazz guitarist but want to branch out into irish music. I lived there for a year and my girlfriend is Irish. You make real good sense of the tuning and how to utilize it, and communiacte it and the approach very clearly. what is there to say! the video speaks for itself.

  • you are a really great teacher.

  • Cheers mate. It's my job, but in this video I'm just a rambling mess! I just hoped it would be entertaining!

    All the best

    Phil

  • Thats very modest of you!

  • KInd of you to say so, but I didn't even know the camera had stopped running!

    All the best

    Phil

PS I'm not often like this! (shame!)

  • hi can you play in any key or conly i the key of d and g

  • Hi there,

You can play in any key, it's just easier to play in D and G! C, A and F are all pretty feasible if you work round it.

    Cheers

    Phil

  • I came to DADGAD (by way of exposure to Pierre Bensusan) a few years ago after 25 years of playing fingerstyle, and the fun for me was learning how to play all over again -- but with skills. I love those fluid runs Phil, thanks for the challenge. I'm on it.

  • i wish i could like that...

  • i like the part of your break Hahahhhah

  • messing about in dadgad !! he he luvvitt. oh and when your pages got stuck together priceless... cheers

  • Nice one Phil. Thanks for the steer in this tuning. Hopefully I will not be seen as the SADLAD of DADGAD. A wee bit of practice and I might get a tune out of it :-)

  • Woe betide you ending up on the DEDBED. Ta for your comments. As long as you remember that this is almost always a fingerstyle tuning - without the emphasis on patterns - you'll be great. Post a vid in the future and let's have a listen!

    Cheers

    Phil

  • I'm not sure what I liked more: the explanation or the cutoff jorts. Seriously though, that was cool.

  • Ahh! I see what guitar it is! Thanks anyway!

    (Great video too!)

  • What kind of guitar is that? I like it a lot!

  • Great vision here . I have mostly thought in dorian mode having come to DADGAD from G sus 4 on clawhammer banjo the tuning historicaly known as sawmill tuning . Very helpful thinking on your clip .I have tried Mr Beverages Maggot in DGDGCD because it in G but it is wonderful in D if you want to give it a try in DADGAD .

Very nice to meet you here . All the best , Guy

  • Hi Guy,

Thanks for your comments. There are several tunings referred to on this channel - the one for 'Both Sides Now' is engaging, as is the 'baritone' Lowden on 'Bleak Midwinter'

    Cheers for now

    Phil

  • It is a steel-string "parlor" size guitar.

  • The only song I ever played in DADGAD was the song from the movie The Punisher I had no idea I could do stuff like this.

  • wow man that's some trip id love to play this with some "experience". I might come up with something.

  • Hi m8. Liked your demo''' 5***** and subbed...

  • very funny phil...excellent!...why has no one remarked on that cracking little guitar...it's like a parlor but with a much deeper body...those rmmga boys would love you....maybe they already do...what do i know....y'know...

the blues aint about feelin bad...its about makin other folks feel worse..haha...cheers.

  • Check the number of times he says the word 'possiblilities' This video is becoming legendary!!

  • Thanks to mizzissippiblues for sending this gem my way.

  • never try this in BAGDAD

  • Absolutely, always beware of guitar insurgents! Although BAGDAD is actually a pretty interesting tuning; apparently used by John Martyn on 'Bless The Weather'.

    Cheers

  • awesome

  • Dress like that and you can't see any 'effin possiblilities! Other than that, instructive in places.
