Japan wasn't allowed to have the L28. The dirty little secret that Nissan doesn't want anyone to know is that Mr. K wanted the Z car to be sold exclusively in America and was built solely to the tastes of the American market
@superjump01 The engine was different, the bumpers were different, the tail lights were different, hell, the front turn signals were different. Yes, the lenses are the same. The housings are not. If you wanna get really into detail, the factory the mirrors were on the fenders.
The L28 was taxed heavier, because it was a larger emissions. The entire purpose behind the 432 and 432r was to put a higher powered engine in there, without going over a displacement above 2.0L to avoid the extra taxes.
@moderns30 all due respect the details you mention, although legitimate, are rather small and mediocre at best. things like fender mirrors and side markers only make the car look different they don't effect how the handles. The early 240 bumpers were exactly the same in USA as they were in Japan. bumpers for the most part are irrelevant considering less than half of the still existing road ready Z's in the world even have their original bumper.
@superjump01 While petty it may be. The bumpers are not the same. The fairlady bumper has less holes in it and an USDM bumper ever had. If you wanna go on models not offered here, there is also the 240zg. That was offered in japan. Its the internet so it is serious business and all. I just didn't like that you were a smart ass. Otherwise I wouldn't have even bothered responding. The fairlady is not the same car, but, like EVERY model offered in USDM and JDM versions, they are very similar.
@moderns30 A bumper however different is still nothing but a superficial cosmetic piece and not a FUNDAMENTAL design change. Everything that makes the Z car a Z car between Japanese and US variants is the same. the chassis is the same the suspension is the same. the diff is the same the engine, other than some random EPA bits, is the same. From a strictly engineering standpoint Nothing between a fairyland and a US Z is fundamentally different.
@moderns30 the 432/R engine is the biggest legitimate difference but when you factor in that only a few hundred were made vs hundreds of thousands of standard L series engines you can not use them as a proper comparison. with the exception of the 432/R the dtails you mention are, for lack of a better word, petty and don't fundamental make the Japanese variant any different car then the US variant. I have driven a Japanese Variant and owned a US variant. Fundamental they're the same.
@superjump01 Also, notice that the fairlady does not have the rear marker lights, only the front ones. The drag guys in Japan usually build 3.0-3.2 L28's that are stroked and poked. I am pretty sure the front grills are also different for the fairlady, I am sure there are some things I am missing. They are in fact a totally different car.
Any dedicated z owner knows that Mr. K built the Z focused on the American market. The z is what actually got Japanese sports cars going in America.
I knew it was familiar , it sounded like a Skyline :D
