All these years later I still love to see it. I had the pleasure of oversleeping and ending up sitting in first class on this flight. Best mistake I ever made. It was the Captain's retirement flight complete with a banner on the staircase. Not only did we 'wave' goodbye to Frankfurt, but we overtook a United B777 over the Atlantic, and shot a missed approach into IAD. Memories like this are why I love to be a part of the industry!
Aber who cares? Macht eben Spaß...
It is actually quite nice. But it would have been nicer if that guy had not been screaming "geil" all the time. I mean we understood it. He almost had an orgazm. LOL
This is a so called "low approach" procedure. You don't touch the tarmac, just pass it in a certain altitude. Pilots do that either because of having missed the correct glide path, any occurrences on the runway (runway incursions), in their aircraft or because of a high traffic density. Sometimes they do it just for fun. Search for "goodbye tempelhof" here on YouTube - those pilots do it to say "goodbye".
This is way cool. Not too many times in your life you'd get to see this. The tower gave the okay. It is actually safer than taxiing by the fire trucks spraying water which is the usual retirement hooplah in the US.
Apparently Californiamare (what are you, a horses ass?) has a problem with Germans. The fly-by includes the dipping of the wings which signals a "wave goodbye."
These people are laughing in excitement. They are most like "plane spotters". They are saying "geil" (sp?), which translate to "cool" on the retiring pilot's "fly-by" to say goodbye to Frankfurt. The first female voice is saying "he should be rocking his wings" as he goes by.
unless "plane spotters" are allowed at the FRA ATC Tower, I would say the ones talking and laughing are ATC controllers / employees. Looking at the angle where the video was shot, the guys were standing on the ATC control tower.
The pilot of the United Airlines pilot was retiring and this was his last flight out of Frankfurt. He was saying "goodbye" with a "fly-by" on departure.
This video gives me chills. I just worked home today (sfo) on a 747-400 from PEK. There is no better thrill than sitting at 4 left knowing we fly with the best pilots in the world. Thank you for a great 36 years so far...3/10/08
Thank you for posting this...I was fortunate to be onboard that day, and it was an incredible feeling when the captain rocked the plane to "wave goodbye" to FRA (he was retiring, and it was his last flight). We were so lucky!
What flight was this? sfo, iad?. This is just the best, seldom seen or experienced, once in a lifetime deal. And that someone got it on tape! how lucky!!!!!! I just came home from pek today (sfosw). Thanks for your posting.I am glad you felt it was worth the few extra minutes of fltime to celebrate!
It was the flight to IAD, but I can't remember the flight number. It's funny that we were sad that we didn't make it on the SFO non-stop, but after this, we were so happy! (sfocs)
Macht weiter so!!

"This was a retirement flight of the captain,so the tower in Frankfurt ask him, if he would do a low approach. It was filmed from the tower.
Nice fun for the captain, the passengers and the atc controller."

Why is that pilot doing what he did? Never seen anything like that. Not an aborted landing but not a landing either. What was that?
