Hey everybody, I am a polyglot like Steve is and I am fluent in 37 languages and am almost fluent in French. Please check my profile to see what languages I speak first, then if you want any lessons of any of my languages, please reply to this comment mentioning the language you want to learn and me to teach and help you. Thanks.
I agree with u2bealot. One of the reasons I like to learn other languages is to expose myself more directly to other cultures. Sure, I could watch a foreign film that's been translated into English, but watching it in it's original language is much more fulfilling and meaningful.
I don't understand why you say that there are no others reasons to study a language that pleasure, they're all valid from my point of view. That's a very capricious thing to say.
I have no interest in learning languages for any reason other than, I genuinely want to be able to communicate with people in that language. I just wish I knew people who speak the languages I want to study, lol. I feel lucky to have met somebody who speaks Swahili. I would like to learn Navajo someday, but I doubt I would ever run into many people who speak it, which is unfortunate but I still want to learn it. I also do see a connection to music and languages.
- We learn foreign languages to obtain or advance in employment. In many industries today, it is a distinct advantage to speak another language in order to be able to communicate with staff. A Spanish speaking foreman in the construction industry has a built in advantage over his monolingual colleagues and so on, thats why we learn, in your case is different , you are an old man, you are retired ,and this is a hobby for youas well as getting some money from the morons who follow your method
learning a language is just a small part of what you get from looking deeper into a culture you dont really know about.. the culture, music, friendships made, foods etc.its very fun learning.
If your work involves regular contact with speakers of foreign languages, being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them. It may also help you to make sales and to negotiate and secure contracts. Knowledge of foreign languages may also increase your chances of finding a new job, getting a promotion or a transfer overseas, or of going on foreign business trips.
To me the biggest pleasure of learning a language comes not from its utilitarian use, but indeed from its personal use. For me that use is to read the poetry, literature, and historical documents and manuscripts in that language. I'm nowhere near being able to truly do any of that, but what I can read and comprehend is phenomenal.
I have also received much respect from my German friends. I can't speak fluent, but when I say a few words here and there it shows my respect to them and their lang.
Quite frankly, the knowledge of other secondary languages rather than just english will open doors to new worlds and different profound ways of thinking other than Hollywood and american popculture.
@u2bealot Yes. Sadly thats why many youths today don't care to learn another language (other than English), and even older people. Because they feel like well the music, movies, and TV shows are in English, that's all I care about. But it closes the mind to learning about other cultures.
Great video. You are a great motivator Steve. I can add some examples. In my experience, whenever I have sat in a group of people from a certain country, even though we all speak english, they will always, after no more than 30 seconds or so, switch to their native language. So, that is a reason for learning languages. In addition, because I know spanish I can not only listen to and enjoy the english videos on youtube, but also the very many interesting spanish videos that are out there.
I politely disagree with your stance on Greek or Latin not helping with medical terminology. It is the most powerful mnemonic I know; if you recognize the root word then you've got it. I do agree that that alone is a poor reason to learn a language though. The rest, and especially the thing about music and language, were dead on. Great video!.
Yes! i immerse in languages because they bring me joy. i had many years of agony because i had french forced on me. Every time I thought I would really love to learn italian, the voices in my head would say you sHoUld improve your French or you live in So. California. You ShouLD learn spanish. But one day i just said ENOUGH. I went to the library where i got my first italian CDs and never looked back. Last year i started Japanese and I just love it. Another great video! Thanks!
Some German and Japanese companies have an inhose policy of using English as the official language within their companies. (Siemens, Bosch, Citibank Japan, Proctor and Gamble Japan, Nissan Motor Co. to name just a few)
good video! I had the experience of having French shoved down my throat in Canada as well. And it's sad that I didn't enjoy it back then because French is a beautiful language.
The only way people will learn is out of desire or necessity. Most children in public schools don't NEED another language to get by, and because of the way it's often taught, most don't desire to learn either. The simple fact that I was forced to learn french made it undesirable for me.
Great video!

The most valuable tool in life is learning another language, if not another, and another! :)
