@warzer0 sorry but in your reply you said newer boards is much easier to type on. You might have explained why they no longer make it but then you contradicted why this is such a great board. If it is harder to type on then why is it a great board?
I had one of these keyboards from IBM for years. Sadly, the PS-2 cord developed a short and stopped working. I wanted to have it repaired, but two of the local computer shops said that IBM doesn't support these keyboards any longer, so I tossed it into the trash can. Ironically, every keyboard I have had since then from Dell, has been of inferior quality. Sadly, my Microsoft Comfort Keyboard 2000 isn't much better.
why the fuck would you use a ps2 to USB adapter? almost all PCs have a ps2 port, and by using the PS2 port you get full n-key rollover aswell as faster response rate...
@MaerchenprinzHD not inferior, just a different feel. buckling spring keys are a lot stiffer, and the resistance gets a lot higher just prior to actuation. however on the plus side theyre the only switch whos actuation point is exactly the same moment as the tactile and audible click.
@shogrran firstly, they do still make it, secondly because its about 10x more expensive to make than a regular rubber dome keyboard, and most consumers dont know the difference.
@crsjen88 10x more expensive to make than regular rubber dome keyboards... well so are other mechanical keyboards. If I'd make an analogy... it's like the toyota 86, many say its a good car but why isn't toyota making it anymore?
Cost primarily but also because the newer production membrane keyboards and even the modern mechanicals are easier to type on and IMO the whole idea of audio/tactile feedback is a bit of a misnomer since it doesn't matter what the keypress is if the desired action doesn't occur on the screen. Plus they're HARD to type on for long periods of time.
On the other hand though, the clackity clackity is quite a bit of fun. :) And these things are invulnerable.

@potanda So does my Gigabyte UD3-990FX mobo, my comment was mostly to more 'family made range' mobo's that you see in those pre-made computers. (Dell, HP, Etc)
@phototristan Thanks, but I'll only get a IBM Model-M if it was free, my friend goes to a recycling plant to get computer parts and I asked him "Hey, did you find any old IBM Keyboards?" and show him a picture of a Model-M in skype and he said "Yeah, I tripped on one, got pissed off and smashed 3 of them" and I was like "Dude, you just destroyed like $250 worth of keyboards"

Hi, this is me. I will ask you again here instead.
How do I use my PS/2 Model M keyboard on my PC (Running WIN 7 Ultimate)?
1391401 is Part No and it has blue label. Production date is 21 Dec 92.
If I have to install a driver, then where can I get that driver?? I searched on HPs site but did not find any drivers there.
Thanks!
P.S.
I solved the problem with using this keyboard on my PS3, and the problem was that the PS3 itself do not have any drivers for PS/2 keyboards or mice. SAAAAD!!!!:((((
@phototristan Thank you for the respond. I'm not living in the US (SWEDEN) so i really appreciate if you can send me some kind of link or something like that so I can see what product you meant. I actually picked some PS/2 to USB adapter from a store, so I might picked wrong one.
You actually want to use the PS/2 port if your motherboard has one. PS/2 supports full n-key rollover, and there's no latency from several devices on the USB bus.
Mine should be shipped to me by today or tomorrow and I am so happy. I noticed when I was signing up for another class earlier that my local college had these on their old comps and were I believe throwing them away.... I really hope I could grab another one.
Model M's with the IBM logo were most likely made by Lexmark who had a contract to make them for IBM. They were made to meet IBM's very high quality standards. Once the contract ran out Lexmark sold the patents to Unicomp who make the currently available M's. Unicomp is not held to IBM's standards and it shows in build quality issues. I have 2 each of both brands and the Unicomps have had problems since almost new. Get a Lexmark if you can; they're worlds apart quality-wise.
The IBM model m keyboard and other mechanical keyboards are for those who actually use their rigs for more than just gaming. Membrane keyboards are very uncomfortable and cheaply made. I don't need fancy lights and macros to enjoy my games.

you got done saying they dont make them like this anymore, then acknowledge that unicomp still makes them. they didnt just buy a patent, the own and operate the lexington KY factory that IBM made the keyboards in as well.
Don't use a USB to PS2 adapter, as that will ruin the anti-ghosting, limiting it to 6-key rollover, versus NKRO on PS2, also you have to deal with a polling rate via USB instead of forced interrupts via PS2.
I go dumpster diving once a week. There's this place that just throws away nifty technology.... Anyways. Tonight I went diving and found one of these magical keyboards(in a box with like 10 other model M's) and yoinked it, not knowing at first what I had my hands on. I grabbed it because I enjoy the clicky noise and KNOW that I can type faster on them. I am going back tomorrow and grabbing the rest of these keyboards. And looking for the PS/2 cables.
I'm so keen to get a mechanical keyboard. I have a similar IBM to that but its sillicone even that is amazing to type on and feels better than any high end logitech/microsoft keyboard I have tried in the last few years. It has solid steel internal backing 1.5mm heavy and chunky as THEY DONT MAKE KEYBOARDS THAT YOU CAN KILL PEOPLE WITH ANYMORE LOL!!! Doesn't have a 'windows key' though but ctrl+esc gets around that fine enough. Has PS2 without standard orientation block... weird
Thank you for posting this video! I remember using this keyboard in my grandfather's basement to play Pipe Dream for DOS when I was 7! I've been considering buying one of these keyboards when I get another Macintosh (because I hate those flat little wireless things that could probably bend if I pressed the G key too hard), and I was wondering if the keys could be remapped (i.e., Windows key doubling as a command key). Your video answered my questions instantly.
If they made a G19 that had the feel of this keyboard, they could sell it for $300 and still sell tens of thousands. I want the features of the G19 but want a mechanical keyboard too :(
This keyboard is to many computer people what vintage cars are to collectors. If you don't appreciate the feel of the keys then you are really not a hacker in any general sense of the word.
i have this keyboard lying at home from a windows 95 computer (that still runs). I was going to throw the whole setup away until i heard about its longevity and surprising value... its turning a bit yellow but I'll hold onto it ;)
@phototristan It's because some are passive adapters that don't provide much power and others are active adapters that provide power. The IBM Model M is a very power hungry keyboard compared to other "mushy" boards.
@SmellsLikeNirvanna, most of those suck. I'd just use PS2. If you have PS2, might as well use it there's actually several advantages of a PS2 keyboard over a USB keyboard, such as not needing legacy usb support turned on to use in a dos-like mode.
@SmellsLikeNirvanna Typical adapters just directly connect the wires from the PS/2 connector to the USB connector, they really do no translation/conversion (i.e they have no smarts). With an active PS/2 to USB the system is able to detect the USB device and actually talks to a driver.
@SmellsLikeNirvanna Some so-called PS/2 keyboards speak both USB and PS/2. So the adaptors that come with those keyboards don't have any brains in them -- they just connect the pins from one cord to the other, and the keyboard switches over to USB mode. You need one that actually has the PS/2 -> USB brains in it.
@SmellsLikeNirvanna most ps2 adapters simply rewire the connection to match a usb port, assuming the connection is already outputting a USB signal. what sense this is supposed to make, i have no idea. a ps2 keyboard signal needs to be converted by a digital processor before it can be used with as a USB device. for this reason, you need to buy an adapter that will do this. many usb "adapters" do not do such a thing
Mine just arrived yesterday, and i have to say i feel like im getting something done now when i type, its amazing and i feel sorry that cheap plastic and rubber domes is supposedly seen as being better nowadays...
Does the adapter that you bought eliminate ghosting? I bought a converter from my local store that has serious ghosting problems (only two keys work at a time). I wanna know if the one on the internet is worth the money, or if it does the same thing as my converter.
i just got my new keyboard today.. but it aint one of those clicky keyboards.. it looks like a laptop keyboard.. i am really enjoying typing on itl.. epecially this line, ;D.. it got a really relaxing sound.. ;D..
Thanks for posting up this video, and mentioning the company that now makes the model 'M' - it takes me back to when I used these keyboards at college/uni. For far too long I've been using the crappy modern equivalents. I'm now going to buy a unicomp - we have to keep the buckling spring alive!
People had recommeneded these to me when I mentioned wanting a high quality keyboard. I'd recommend the Das Keyboard - has the same style clicky keys (and a silent version) nice shiny black finish so they don't look like they're from the 80's and they have USB. Has mechanical keys and the like. I'd recommend that if you want a durable keyboard that doesn't look ancient lol. Although I still like my Saitek Eclipse...
I've got two of these that I've been using since about 1991. However, I'm reall missing a Windows key, so I think I'm going to look into that Unicomp Spacesaver.
I was just on some site where a guy was showing off his new mechanical keyboard....not an IBM model M but a very nice mechanical keyboard....and he's paid like $170 all in for the keyboard, VAT and shipping. All these clueless kids and posers posted underneath...laughing at him, saying "for that you could have bought a Logitech Dinovo!!!" They've obviously been suckered into the hype surrounding these fancy new overpriced keyboards and don't know what a real keyboard is. Only mechanical for me.
@9a3eedi I had a Majestouch Filco tenkeyless Blue Cherry keyboard for a while. It's got a nice feel but still not as nice nor as tactile as a Model M.
BTW, Blue Cherry keyswitches is the same as what is in the Das Keyboard but the Filco ones have better build quality.
My wife would LOVE that when I am gaming at night and she is trying to sleep!
Wife-"what the hell is that noise!"
Me-"Sorry hun, just playing COD4"
Wife-"knock it off...or I kill you!"
I think I will stick with my G15 for now.

I"m still angry at my dad for donating two of these to an elementary school to be taken apart by kids :( .... he hunts and pecks of course.

damn it, I think I had that exact same model for my old desktop, spilled root beer on it and now it's in a dumpster.
alexcheetah79 1 year ago
@alexcheetah79 It can probably be cleaned up and work almost good as new!

@phototristan Sorry, 5 years too late. :(

Luckily most desktop still have ps2 connectors. Atleast if you build the machine yourself.
NitroGadvRules 1 year ago
If they made a G19 that had the feel of this keyboard, they could sell it for $300 and still sell tens of thousands. I want the features of the G19 but want a mechanical keyboard too :(

I just got 7 of these keyboards for free my school was getting rid of em i also got 2 apple 2's
koszarek1994 1 year ago
This keyboard is to many computer people what vintage cars are to collectors. If you don't appreciate the feel of the keys then you are really not a hacker in any general sense of the word.
jadlerhalofan 1 year ago
@01sean quick question, looking to buy that keyboard, would you recommend it? i need something thats reliable and good for both typing and gaming.
OOIEatte 1 year ago
i have to get myself one of these! that sounds quite nice! (lol, my keyboard is plugged into PS/2 right now!)

i have this keyboard lying at home from a windows 95 computer (that still runs). I was going to throw the whole setup away until i heard about its longevity and surprising value... its turning a bit yellow but I'll hold onto it ;)

I have a old clicky keyboard with a 5pin DIN connector, don't have an adapter though : (
snuffsan 1 year ago
I loved this keyboard for the clean, organized look. The "clicky" sound was rather annoying in an office. But it was great.

why wouldnt regular Ps2 to usb adapters work?
SmellsLikeNirvanna 1 year ago
@SmellsLikeNirvanna Some do, many don't. It's just how it is.
phototristan 1 year ago
@phototristan wow nice answer XD
alexmeanberg 1 year ago
@phototristan It's because some are passive adapters that don't provide much power and others are active adapters that provide power. The IBM Model M is a very power hungry keyboard compared to other "mushy" boards.
kabj06 11 months ago
Why can't I just use the PS/2 cable instead of a USB adapter?
Barman1942 1 year ago
@SmellsLikeNirvanna
you have to buy a CONVERTER, not a adapter (they have special circuit). i think then it should work ... at least in germany
l2804l 1 year ago
@SmellsLikeNirvanna, most of those suck. I'd just use PS2. If you have PS2, might as well use it there's actually several advantages of a PS2 keyboard over a USB keyboard, such as not needing legacy usb support turned on to use in a dos-like mode.
shred5 1 year ago
@shred5 Dude, i would use PS2 if i had a PS2 port, but unfortunately my laptop doesnt.
SmellsLikeNirvanna 1 year ago
@SmellsLikeNirvanna, ah wasn't thinking of laptops...
shred5 1 year ago
@SmellsLikeNirvanna Typical adapters just directly connect the wires from the PS/2 connector to the USB connector, they really do no translation/conversion (i.e they have no smarts). With an active PS/2 to USB the system is able to detect the USB device and actually talks to a driver.
hellfish5 1 year ago
@SmellsLikeNirvanna Some so-called PS/2 keyboards speak both USB and PS/2. So the adaptors that come with those keyboards don't have any brains in them -- they just connect the pins from one cord to the other, and the keyboard switches over to USB mode. You need one that actually has the PS/2 -> USB brains in it.
amartini51 1 year ago
@SmellsLikeNirvanna most ps2 adapters simply rewire the connection to match a usb port, assuming the connection is already outputting a USB signal. what sense this is supposed to make, i have no idea. a ps2 keyboard signal needs to be converted by a digital processor before it can be used with as a USB device. for this reason, you need to buy an adapter that will do this. many usb "adapters" do not do such a thing

They still sell this for 60 dollar but why doesn't they like re-style it that it doesn't look like its 80's?
Arnodude53 1 year ago
@Arnodude53 They no longer sell original M's. He mentions in the video, Unicomp does sell black ones that are very similar to the original M.
Besides, what's wrong with the retro feel?

Does the adapter that you bought eliminate ghosting? I bought a converter from my local store that has serious ghosting problems (only two keys work at a time). I wanna know if the one on the internet is worth the money, or if it does the same thing as my converter.

@Press1ToParty I have not encountered nor heard of others having any ghosting issues with the blue square adapter.

At least they are the kind that know what they are talking about. Most of them only buy Mac PCs because they look pretty and don't know shit.

marceloyanez111pt2 1 year ago
Thanks for posting up this video, and mentioning the company that now makes the model 'M' - it takes me back to when I used these keyboards at college/uni. For far too long I've been using the crappy modern equivalents. I'm now going to buy a unicomp - we have to keep the buckling spring alive!
mikeymikey0000 1 year ago
The Das keyboard does not have as sturdy or as tacticle a feel.
phototristan 1 year ago
People had recommeneded these to me when I mentioned wanting a high quality keyboard. I'd recommend the Das Keyboard - has the same style clicky keys (and a silent version) nice shiny black finish so they don't look like they're from the 80's and they have USB. Has mechanical keys and the like. I'd recommend that if you want a durable keyboard that doesn't look ancient lol. Although I still like my Saitek Eclipse...

i have the unicomp plus a couple of model m - i have to be honest, i don't ever use the windows key - can't think of one use i have for it.

I've got two of these that I've been using since about 1991. However, I'm reall missing a Windows key, so I think I'm going to look into that Unicomp Spacesaver.

My Model M survived almost 0.5L of cold beer. Those exit holes beneath the keyboard really work
c0v3n4n7 1 year ago
I was just on some site where a guy was showing off his new mechanical keyboard....not an IBM model M but a very nice mechanical keyboard....and he's paid like $170 all in for the keyboard, VAT and shipping. All these clueless kids and posers posted underneath...laughing at him, saying "for that you could have bought a Logitech Dinovo!!!" They've obviously been suckered into the hype surrounding these fancy new overpriced keyboards and don't know what a real keyboard is. Only mechanical for me.

I would get this keyboard, if only it had windows keys :(
9a3eedi 2 years ago
For that you need a Unicomp model! I use one now myself and it's very similar.
phototristan 2 years ago
@phototristan not sure......... unicomp? or the majestouch? hmmhmmm... can't decide lol.
9a3eedi 2 years ago
@9a3eedi I had a Majestouch Filco tenkeyless Blue Cherry keyboard for a while. It's got a nice feel but still not as nice nor as tactile as a Model M.
BTW, Blue Cherry keyswitches is the same as what is in the Das Keyboard but the Filco ones have better build quality.
phototristan 1 year ago
@phototristan I decided to go for the Majestouch (Blue cherry).. I'm satisfied :D but I still want to at least try out the model M sometime.

@9a3eedi Yeah, the Model M is way better!
