  • I do not know anything about it and I certainly will not know anything about adultery. The song is about a troubled young women who is having an adulterous relationship and asking the unfaithful husband to leave his family as in wife and children for her.

  • As usual, once The Queen puts her stamp on a song, it's all hers! I love Whitney's original and it stands on its own. But Aretha gives it a gritty, sanctified, gut bucket soul that no one else can do!

  • Aretha Franklin is the most talented and gifted NATURAL singer, the only QUEEN of SOUL of all time. Before her, no one sang this way and btw, who else before Alicia Keys self accompanied? To self accompany on Piano illustrates the innate understanding of the singer. Aretha is #1, undisputed and she'll carry the standard until she dies. I only wish these great singers would NOT get so massively obese in their later years. Not for vanity, but for their health! Poor Luther Vandross....

  • @MsJollycholly But you know Aretha's lost weight.

  • @tashia041689 - Is that true? I'm glad to hear it, but I did not know. Not that I follow her weight gains/losses. I am happy, tashia, to hear this. I'll bet she feels better because even ten or fifteen pounds can make an ENORMOUS difference in blood pressure, blood sugar numbers and kidney function. Is there a picture somewhere? I watched PBS last week where she m-c'd 'oldies', and she was quite large. I felt bad for her HEALTH - not for any other reason.

  • @jazzscherzo Your welcome. Ree, has a unique voice but nothing superior to other female vocalists who has the gift to-SANG.

  • Ree Ree will always take you to church! I love her and her version of this song.

  • i almost want to cook fried egg on her face LOL!!!

  • aretha franklin is whitney's godmother so i am pretty sure whitney looked up to her.

  • For a pop version I guess you might have a point, but I love Ree Ree's rendition cuz I hate smaltzy pop ballads!!! Aretha takes it to church or the Apollo & Whitney took it to Broadway & Vegas!!! Totally different crowds & ears!!!

  • I wonder how Whitney would sound compared to Aretha if Whitney was whatever age Aretha is in this clip?

  • Diva, no compromise. We salute you Aretha.

  • No NO no ARETHA wrong era for you honey. i dont know wether its too soft a song for her but its not matching her well at all. i didnt like it wasnt feeling it at all Aretha sorry but of course i love you

  • this song has been Arethafided, lol

  • la classsssse!!!!

  • I'm totally distracted by that incredible gown, and ....Ms Ree's figure. I didn't know she had a figure, at any time during the 80's. Wow. Hott!

  • fantastic

  • WHAT DOES SHE HAVE ON? LIKE NOTHING! LOL GONE GIRL.... BUT STILL..... GOTTA LOVE WHITNEY :)

  • Whtineyyy is BETTER !!!!!!!!!

  • What the hell is she wearing in this?

  • Stop comparing them! They are both great artists but different generations. They have different singing style and voices. Aretha's voice is more traditional for classic soul and gospel music while Whitney is also good for pop and more modern styles. Don't forget that Whitney's voice is mezzo soprano. And please keep in mind that they are relatives. Whitney is probably the only woman who calls Aretha "aunt Rhee"

  • She off key honestly! No other man sounds part does not have enough vibrato. Whitney sounds way better.

  • @kmaur21 No she is not off key sweetie... clear your ears

  • I think Both Aretha and Marilyn McCoo have done this better. Houston's versions of others' material is always the worst, I haven't heard her cut an original better. Despite her remarkable voice, I think bettering an original is beyond her ability.

  • She is just superb singer. No-one can touch her. The intro was particularly good. Makes Houston's studio hit version look ridiculous.

  • @911insidejo8 Whitney's 10 minute versions of this song in her early concerts live, makes Aretha's live version look ridiculous.

  • @whfan007 True Whitney puts Ree to shame!

  • Damn I like this version GO REE!

  • Whitney Houston in her prime can't and will never be in the same league as the QUEEN Aretha! Time has proved that.

  • @NubbyG05 ...True that. Probably Whitney's biggest problem is she recorded such shitty material early on. I don't think her first few albums had 1 good song on them except maybe this one.

Franklin, on the other hand, was recorded with first-rate musicians and was intimately involved with the creative process as the principle pianist and such. Houston has shown that having a good voice doesn't necessarily make you an artist.

  • @911insidejo8 you relay dont know what your talking about Whitney s first album was a big hit and all of the albums that came after and all of Whitney song are like wwoooww but maybe u just have bad taste

  • @coolboooy6666 ...well I didn't say her 1st record flopped, I'm quite aware it was a commercial bonanza, but that doesn't mean the record is actually any good.

  • I forgot what it was like seeing Aretha so healthy....

  • Ummm, gave me chills in the intro. I love this rendition. Whitney's version is sweet, and she sang it as a very young woman. Here I see and hear a woman who has been through it!

  • aretha is a legend but so is whitney n nobody does it like withney

  • @a1d2h I love to listen to Aretha and this version of SAMLFY is great!

But she is the one that insists on singing Nessun Dorma, so people start to compare (thats probably what happened). Don't attack classical singers because of it.

Plus Its Clear that you have no Idea about how free can be a Classical interpretation, the same musical parts (roles) can have very different coloraturas, timbres (from soubrettes to Dramatics), even different tempos, keys, and sometimes even the lyrics can change.

  • WTF is wrong with you IDIOTS coming to this video clip bashing Aretha!! It is real clear to me that most of you dummies know nothing about singing or music! Aretha is a great vocalist and can blow many singer out of the water in 16 bars! So stop the madness!

  • @DigitalDezinesCEO

    THANK YOU!

  • so that's how Aretha got famous - by standing there halfnaked and sweaty, selling sex.

  • @a1d2h One last time, have I ever said Aretha isn't a skilled singer?

I never compared her to any singer (And if you wanted me to do that, forget... even because as you said there is no point of comparision with Sutherland. I was talking about singing technique in a general way (Of course you probably never disscussed classical singing with me... You would see that is a very different level than this)

Well its quite late here in Europe...I must work tomorrow (my life is quite busy ;)

    Goodnight

  • @a1d2h Its ok, I'm not offended, plus you seem to be polite (a lot of people insult me because they can't accept a different opinion from someone who is polite and actually respects Aretha)

I'll try explain this one more time: I think there are many GOOD places between being bad and being close to perfection, and I think Aretha must be in a Great place. I just don't think she has got a vocal technique that close to perfection.

I already said a lot of things that I really like on her!

    Peace ;)

  • @ZebFAN2010 Please don't talk about my life... because that's quite unapropriated here.

I also have nothing against you... Plus I comment in such different music videos that I see and even when people don't agree with me they don't start these kind of "fights".

I think people should try to expand their ideas about music instead of not respecting others opinions. I actually thank a1d2h for sugesting me to see another video (because now I know more), even if he thinks different than me.

    Peace!

  • @ZebFAN2010 You must be quite coward to not answer me directly and you also atack me personally because you probably have no objective reasons or logic ones to talk about music.

My life only matters to the ones who know me and to myself, (plus you should know that you can't vote on you own comments or on another's comments more than one time).

I never made any Patti comparision in this video and I don't even know why you are talking about her, probably lack of rethoric too.

    What's your problem?

  • @a1d2h I know Streisand very well. I also have some Aretha music, and I am way more informed that what you are judging me (plus I never wanted to judge you).

This all started because of vocal technic questions. And as I said before, Aretha is a great singer its true, but in terms of vocal technique she is Not "technically and artistically a masterful vocalist in any standard, she is definitely a diaphragmatic singer, the epitome of it".

Plus Music world is much bigger than English sung music!

  • @a1d2h You have to learn to respect other people's opinions.

How can you call me ignorant if you don't know me? My comments by the way are far more realistic than yours. You call me a Patti fan... well sometimes I like to listen to Soul music but Patti is far from being my favourit musician, she is a Soul singer that I like, is it wrong?

You talk about "perfect pitch, placement" ... Well is me that tell you to listen to other music artists and genres to know whats perfect placement and pitch!

  • Whitney has tried to cover plenty of Aretha songs, but never really done anything creatively impressive with them. Her version of It Hurts Like Hell was read more like it was slam poetry. Her versions of Aint No Way lacked romanticism. Her attempts at gospel are far below the standards and supreme styling of Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, and Aretha Franklin. I think Whitney Houston is a good singer, but soulfully I felt she could never take a song anywhere she wanted to. Aretha has that ability.

  • Aretha not bad, but if this song came out in 70'0s, Aretha would have sounded much better, because her voice was much stronger back then. Aretha still sounded pretty damn good in the 80's but something about her voice had changed.

  • I love Aretha and she sounds cool...but this is Whitney's song all day long....Aretha's version cant even come close....next.

  • Next my ass!

  • I'm not dismissing Aretha, because she's obviously THE original vocalist in pop/rock music...she started the whole big vocal, soulful cross-over type singing that Whitney, Mariah, and others are known for.....but this interpretation of Whitney's song is.......lets just say, i'm glad the song was given to Whitney.

  • You are right this is Whitney's song and can't no one song can.

  • No one can ever top the Whitney version.

But Miss Ree certainly made her mark on it....... Great.

  • Hey "musicredshoes, u BALLOON HEAD, this is one of many many STELLAR performances of the Royal Queen Aretha! U call us Aretha Fanatics? Well this is the MOTHER FREAKING place to be one and youre WAY out of place because haters are not allowed here with your BS about how other singers can do vocally what the Fabulous Aretha does. U's a LIAR and a FOOL! Hey "redshoes, U can go straight to HELL with your condensending talk of diaphragm and breathing! Aretha is the GREATEST EVER, u ASSHOLE Recognize

  • I love this woman...amazing!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Classical singing is the reference from where I'm talking.

Diaphragm is necessary for breathing, but the sound from your voice can have more or less influence from your diaphragm. Bel canto singers spend years and years training just to get their voices to have a perfect diaphragm support and then to make it easier for the troath to do the coloratura without damaging. Aretha and many others damage their voices because of lacking that apropriate use of not only their cords but also their bodies.

  • That is not the reason Aretha damaged her voice, Aretha smoking problem and her weight along with age are the main reason Aretha's voice is in the state it is in now. Quite frankly Aretha is still in great voice and is not as in bad shape as most think.

  • Hi! I just stated my opinion, based in what I listen to and in what I learn.

I actually like Aretha's music, (probably not as much as you, but I still do).

Smoke and age can help damaging a voice, I agree with you on that point. I just think that sometimes there are also technical problems (for me Aretha is one of those cases, But of course I respect your opinion. When I made my comments I didn't expect such insults thats why I became a bit defensive. But its ok now.)

    Best wishes!

  • For You! What does that suppose to mean. You are suppose to know. Wrong Aretha was technically one of the best. She used her voice better than most, her sole problem was not her a technical flaw, it was years of smoking, weight gain, and age.

  • People that don't have any idea of who I am just start insulting, thinking their comments will be more respectable like that. Just so predictable, It only gives me reason!

Aretha belts but I was talking about belting, any inteligent person would understand it! There are lost of singers who do it as good as her.

I like Aretha and for some who call me a whitney fan, know me first before calling me anything.

Talking like that you will never gain respect of no one!

I wont waste more time with you.

  • @musicredshoes Wasup You're very knowledgeable of the voice. Im curious to talk to you, and ask who you're favorites are, who has proper technique etc. And ask you about a few of my favorites! Thank You!

  • @musicredshoes I'm quite shocked you just made a comment doing nothing but discussing vocal technique when it comes to music. What's up with that? Let's talk soul, style, approach, and how that is reflecting through Aretha. First of all, Aretha's approach to thing song is simply divine. It's oozing with soul. Aretha's runs are the most unique in the business, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. You don't ever hear about Aretha getting a bad concert review, unlike Whitney.

  • @musicredshoes To think that you would degrade a performance that is perfectly fine in terms of tone because you dont' feel it is vocally impressive enough is silly. I've seen many a Whitney live performance and the majority of her concerts today or even in her hey day, were never vocally perfect. There are thousands of concerts of Aretha out there are just perfect ranging from the 60s to 70s to 80s and even 90s and some today as well. Soul is what it is about. That is why Aretha is the Queen

  • @ZebFAN2010

1 - I never said this performance was bad.

2 - I never said Aretha is a bad singer because because she has very good qualities. I like her soulfull timbre, or her familiarity with the piano and with composing (among others)

    3 - I am not a Whitney fan.

4 - My first comment was an opinion about her vocal technique, wich I think it is valid subject for a music video.

5 - I never disrespected her or anybody in this video (opposite to some personal atacks which disrespected me).

    Peace

  • @musicredshoes I first came to see this video because sometimes I like to listen to some Soul music and I was curious about how Aretha would take a song that was such a pleasant song and very well sung by Whitney (with her crystal clear belts and beautifull runs, that don't exist anymore)

(I'm not Whitney fan or Aretha fan but I like to listen to both) Aretha made the song in her own way, even if in my opinion her technique isn't perfect, I actually Like her Soulfull timbre and interpretation!

  • @musicredshoes I wasn't degrading you. I didn't intend for it to come across that way if it did. I just thought vocal perfection was a bit irrelevant, but whatever. So it goes I guess.

  • Tonight I saw the great Queen Aretha with James Brown and that film was fascinating too. thanks for uploading these Music Masters. good work, keep it up

  • Im a proud Aretha Black man Who can!! Im as STRAIGHT UP as they come and will jump shonuff Versace Sharp and go and see Miss ReeRee Live on stage baby! Hey, TheQueenAretha, I 1st saw Queen Aretha Live in Concert in Sept 1980 and once and sometimes twice EVERY YEAR since then and I last saw her last July! I've seen Aretha 30yrs now and out of all the greats that ive seen, Aretha's Total Black Magnificance has too much ARTISTRY and way too FIERCE for the likes of whitney to handle! Love ya ReeRee

  • No one said that she did but Aretha did an amazing job.

  • Well, duh=moron, lol!

  • Kiss my ass, trick!

  • I, come to realize your just a kid & you begain to boring me. Ree's, version is forgettable, Whitney's isn't.

  • Mostick i understand that you love Aretha but you don't have to bash another great singer in the process. Whitney is not a mediocre whitewashed teenie bopper pop artist. She is one of the best singers of all time. Don't go down to that level.

  • Are, you quoting shakespeare? Your statement sounds of a screenplay, lol! Ree's back in the day voice sounded ok, nothing superior to other Female vocalists.

  • As of now, I realize your hilarious & delusional, Lmao!! p.s. theirs a fine line between realist & fan, you idiot!

  • ur right she is an iconic figure..to bad that figure that of a battle ship! what hell does she have on?panties and a boostie covered by a shear shaw. she is a complete and utter mess!

  • i just cannot stop watching this video of queen aretha. aretha, your great inturpretive skills are so evident the way this song became something totally new. thank you thank you yaskam so much for offering to us such a royal mindblowing experience with the fabulous fabulous undisputed queen of soul, miss aretha franklin.

  • Let's not get carried away. Aretha is one of the greatest, but nobody beats Whitney in her prime.

  • "themostbeautifulone", statement, is so true, I'ma quote him=Aretha is one of the greatest, but nobody I mean beats Whitney in her prime. Ain't that the sho-nuff, truth...

  • Are you retarded? Aretha in her prime was vocally and musically unmatched by anyone. She is the all-time best. That is sho-nuff the truth.

  • Are you? No, its not a trick question, either. Ree's back in the day voice sounded ok, nothing superior to other Female vocalists.

  • Bitch get mother fucking real! Aretha voice was not ok, it was one of a kind. In her Aretha was the best thing since sliced bread and you have stated that yourself. Thats what i don't get. You are nothing but a two-faced bitch, one day you praise Aretha saying that she is the best and that no one can touch her and then the next you talk shi. Bitch get you shit together and think before you write shit like that. Aretha voice was superior to all female singer. No singer can touch Aretha Franklin.

  • When it came to singer there hasn't been a singer before or after that was quite like her. Aretha is the greatest singer of all time and don't you forget it.

  • @SoulSir HA! YOU ARE WRONG THERE BUDDY!

  • @themostbeautifulone you are crazy NO ONE BEATS ARETHA IN HER PRIME. ARETHA IS FIRST THAN MAYBE WHITNEY

  • Not even. She sung, "greatest love of all" b4 whitney & Whiney's version is still being played today. People aren't familiar with Ree's version.

  • Aretha never recorded Greatest Love of All she merely sung it in her concerts. Whitney version is the standard, Nippy actually recorded GLOA and made it a hit,

  • Hey, shit 4 brains, pay attention. I, never said record, I typed, "SUNG". I, don't give a damn about Ree, singing it live, like I stated Whitney's redition is more known & memorable then Ree's is, was & ever will be, you big dummy!

  • Hey dumbass, your stupidity is showing (even more then usual). You said that Whiney's version is still being played today, as if Aretha recorded GLOA. Of course people are going to remember Whitney's version because her version was a single that was played on the radio and became a hit. That makes no damn sense, because Aretha going sung the song in her concert from time to time, like she does everything. Aretha never recorded GLOA. You STUPID ASS BITCH!

  • Comment removed

  • Ree, sung the song but not better then Whitney.

  • Comment removed

  • I, never typed , "she's my fav vocalist".

  • Well, duh!!! I told you her gospel seasonings, aren't always needed, in secular music.

  • Aretha's sounds pretty good but not her best vocally.

  • Mama Ree for DAYS and Days!!!!!

  • I have the whole concert. This was in 1988, not 1986. And yes she does slap her but in Giving hin something he can feel lol. That was the funniest part about the concert.

  • alright 2young2old, if you have this entire concert event, we would appretiate this beyond words if somehow you can post something he can feel which is one of her most electrifying numbers. i would love to see some of the other selections by miss ree ree. aretha is phenominally unique beyond words and every new aretha video is a special rare treat. i had to ask. aretha, the greatest voice ever! im so proud of her. aretha is the diva of all divas. aretha is super bad and i di mean good!

  • I posted it couple years back but they took it down. Ill see if I can post it again. But lets hope they dont take it down.

  • i just love this and aretha is looking so grown and sexy. aretha is just amazing. the way she sings other artist's music much better than the original artist. its because she gives it so much pure 100% soul, blues overtones, jazz phrasings, squalling and passionate true heartfelt emotions. all aretha has to do is sing any song, and instantly it becomes a rare treat just to be able to see this special special lady peform live on stage back in the day. whitney, sweet but aretha, fierce fierce

  • GREAT comment. Thanks mostick313.

  • you are very much welcome yaskam. it was a dirty job, telling the aretha franklin truth and somebody had to do it and i really do not mind if i do! the mighty mighty queen aretha always could beat any singer at their own game and if they would dare to enter her world vocally, they would never be able to match aretha's true originality, fierce passion, inturpretive skills and her rare god-like soul Artistry. aretha would make a pie face fool out of pretender who dares to compete! aretha's #1!

  • Ree, sounds okay, nothing special nor moving.

  • WOW AT THAT RUN AT 2:14!

  • Ree, has a tendency to use gospel seasonings, "runs, squalls, & or grawls" to R&B songs, sometime its not necessary & she over does/use it.

  • Yea but the gospel techniques are what made her queen of soul..I love that about her though. She always sang her song her way..not how anybody else sings theres.

  • That applies to any gospel singer, who venture in to secular music, so Ree ain't nobody special nor different.

  • yea she's nobody special..but yet she's the most influential female singer that ever lived...hmmm

  • She's, not the most influential vocalist that ever lived, infact she's after vocalists that paved the way for such as Ella, Billlie, Dinah, Lina & The Great Mahalia.

  • Comment removed

  • look i dont wanna argue with you..they're all great.. Aretha is a little more iconic

  • No, arguement but Ree is not more of a icon then those bona-fide vocal legends, granted her career is successful.

  • It is a fact that she is an iconic figure in music. She is layed her own path for female singers to walk. Her impact on music is huge.

  • Well, duh!!!

  • Aretha is so different from any singer wheither they are secular or gospel or gospel singers that went into secular music. She was a breath of fresh air. She was different from anyother singer ever and still is. She is beyond special. She is spectacular and one of a kind.

  • Huh?

  • There's a fantastic video of Aretha Franklin performing "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" from this night where she's slapping her booty. It was hilarious!

  • Send it please

  • I unfortunately don't have it. It used to be on youtube, but not anymore. This entire concert was recorded, but unfortunately saving all my love and giving him something are the only things I've heard. There is also a video of Aretha getting frustrated with the sound guy because there were sound issues early on where people couldn't hear her. That isn't on youtube anymore. I wish I could find this concert. All I know is that it is in Chicago in like 1988 actually
