For someone (myself) learning this piece for an end of year college exam this is EXCEEDINGLY useful. Love the comment that describes this as the "Stairway to Heaven" or "Smoke on the Water" of jazz bass players. Funny. And as to the guy who feels it's too fast to learn from, I'd suggest getting the sheet music and learning slow using this as a reference for fingering. Thanks allot slapinfunk :)
Think about your wrists! In order to make your jump from the 12th fret (index finger) to the 8th fret (ringfinger), which is quite the long jump, smooth and flowing, and not spastic, you have to "pull" the wrist towards that "8th fret area". This will make your fingers follow smoothly, and your fingerposition will not appear and sound so sudden and bouncy. Keep it up!
I know this is like the "Stairway To Heaven" or "Smoke on the Water" of Jazz heads for practicing bassists. Jaco did it, so now everone does it etc. But regardless of that it's a really important head to learn for Bassists because it really introduces certain aspects of that flowing linear harmony that pays off well in one's overall musicianship. It's like learning a Bach Partita or something. And this head is fun because for the most part,it lays well on the fingers.
@patx29 there are slower versions on youtube. but this one is VERY useful as it's SO clear. You'd need to get the sheet music and learn it slow before this becomes useful though. It's really the close camera on the fingering that makes this one a wee gem.
im with orlando friend, after a while, trying to be Jaco doesn't work, nor does it get you work... Trust me, ive tried it. Get your own thing goin, and more influences. Try a different Bird head. Ornithology, or Scrapple. Theyre some good ones.
I think it's fine for young bass players to try and learn from the masters, but I would strongly suggest they also go after their own thing with as much vigor. Ok - so you want to do some really cool jazz sax lines? Plenty to choose from - just do something that Jaco didn't do.
listen......@orlandofriend- their were PLENTY of bassosts' playing 'Donna Lee' way before Jaco Pastorious was even born dude! I admire Jaco B.U.T. bassists' can play and approach whatever tune they want to play! duh!!!!!!
Too much horizontal shifting, "connect" the phrases (think "flow") Also, you had one or two wrong notes. Your technique, however, is still very nice, WAY better then half of the mishigas on youtube.
Donna lets just about anybody Finger her (the tart), even Jason got a turn : ) R.I.P Jaco....... Legend

Obviously, this player is on the right track.

Perhaps, but Jaco OWNS that tune as far as bass players go.
