I think I liked it. A rehab center for gamers. Different people with their games taking over their life. Can't get any weird-ier than that. So where's the playstation you say? It's in their heads!
cant remember how many hundred times ive watched this, the shorter vers. though which starts when they arrive in the car til when the coloured man says "this is living" after the bomb. nostalgic..
This commercial shows how in Europe we are intellectually superior to Americans. In EU we have complex adds like this one where people refuse to live under the norms of soceity, and in the US......they have this stupid commercials with violence and explosions and yet they aren't alowed to show a bare buttocks.
@TheNM90 So hedonism, so-called "societal rebels", and brief nudity in a video game ad makes one intellectually superior?....... Its a horrible commercial. If you think that after seeing a woman showering and then a guy masturbating to a soccer game I'm supposed to be convinced to buy a Playstation 3 then I seriously doubt you are the "intellectually superior" one.
awesome I loved this campaign so much when it came out in 2007. I have no idea what it means but the cinematogrophy is beautiful, and the art deco... WOW I love it. brings me back... I wonder where is this ?? Is it south america, mexico or something, or maybe meditereanen ??
FYI, the song (2:40) playing is "Garip Çoban" of "Moğollar", a very prominant and historical band from Turkey (60s to present). Moğollar are a well known band also in Europe with their post-modern folkloric sound of their time, as capable Turkish musicians like Cahit Berkay, Cem Karaca and Barış Manço were among the past members . Name of group is inspired from "Mongolians", a strong nation of Middle Asia from B.C. era. The song Garip Çoban means "The Poor Shipperd", a decent heartache story.
Ok youre right. But I dont see how that has anything to do with this ad, really. Ive been googling the meaning, but all I get are some abstract witty pretentious talk. I agree it looks very beautifull and interesting but I dont think it can really follow through on a serious level. Its just style over substance, mostly. Especially the phrase "this is living" thats really the most pretentious phrase Ive ever heard, WHAT is living ? What does it mean, does it mean anything ?
hmm i think its trying to express like how people are restricted by society into what the norm is. on what theyre supposed to be. and the ps3, symbolized by the grenade explosion and the evening scene, liberates them. free to be what they want to be. being yourself and showing others what you really are. that is living. or something like that lolx.
@cookiewaa "being yourself and showing others what you really are".......by buying our product and playing a video game. Its a dumb commercial. Eccentricity in the art world (or in this case, film) is far too often mistaken for brilliance
What the fuck does this commercial have to do with anything? You might as well have a cow sit there on camera for 5 minutes and no dialog whatsoever until the end when it says "PLAYSTATION 3"
I love the ps3 ......I have the slim .... but i love original also ... but what is this trying to market .......I know this was a commercial in europe and europeans are diffrent than americans...... but still what is this
@melikecomedy hmm... that marketing campaign was preparing the field for the "classic" marketing campaign (with games footages, features listing and kickass punchlines), so it wasn't aiming for the big crowd
Sony wanted to get the attention of the press -and- present its PS3 as an art form, a platform for art (= video games), not just a "kiddie toy with games", instead, as a monolith, a "lifestyle" (like what Apple did with the ipod/macbook), a socially meaningful product.
@melikecomedy To get that result, the marketing team aimed the movie/art critics and the gaming press veterans (who often have a good movie/art background after a few years working as culture journalist). If they could win them over during these first rounds, their loyalty wouldn't vanish during the "classic" marketing bombing, and they would provide a strong basis overtime.
These videos are shot with the typical rhythm/color/characters of a specific type of european "intellectuals" movies -
@melikecomedy - : the characters are regrouped for no real reasons, several surrealist scenes happen everywhere, there is no real "easy to get" story. It's like taking apart a movie and reassembling differents elements together, it's what "movie critics" and movie-enthusiasts love to do. There's also a lot of references to other commercials, so the "people in the know" will really feel connected.
=> They tried to sell not only a console, but also a social and culture concept (like Apple did)
is how much has the PS3 lived up to this rather mysterious, seductive image of the PS3? The PS2 used surreal adverts but the PS2 actually lived up to those in some respects thanks to a strong showing for the survival horror genre on the PS2. But the PS3 is now peddling Wii-like games with Move and mostly has games that are visually on a par with the Xbox360. Apart from Heavy Rain and a graphical showcase like Uncharted, the PS3 has not lived up to the quirkiness suggested by this advert has it?
@Picnicl I really don't know that you're talking about. What is represented in this advert, all the different genres and variety of games, are on the PS3 now. I can name a game on PS3 for each "situation" in this commercial. In fact, the PS3 arguably has the most variety in games of all the current gen consoles. I suggest you check out the PS3 library for this year, as it is only matched really by the PC.
for people to 'Jump In' to the Xbox360. Personally, even though it's clearly smug and probably aimed at attracting early adopters prepared to spend money, I quite like the advert. You can see genres and gaming themes being referenced in there (e.g. exotic locations, money , fighting, shooting, explosions). When that man opens the door to some mannequins it reminded me of Silent Hill! You can see what you want in it. Regarding sex, very few games actually feature it. A problem with the advert
If anyone ever chooses to take notice, the This is Living advert (more like short art film) will seem to symbolise the moment that the Playstation brand seemed overtly decadent in the 'credit crunch' era. It epitomises what was seen as the arrogance of Sony in their position of having sold so many millions of consoles. ('I will work harder' etc). The inference was 'this console is too good for most of you'. The pool in this advert is seemingly off limits to most, as opposed to Microsoft's urge
no dude they had acid put in the water, they all started actin funny after they had contact with the water, but i gotta say kind of a weird commercial and pretty dam long
Its not a commercial for the product, its a branding exercise. It was made to sell the experience of the brand, not to describe any particular capability.
If this commerical had played here in the US, it would turn kids brains into mash and make them trip on acid.
That one old guy coming out of the close in the commerical, would not really sell a video game console here in America either.. This Commerical is just too weird. This seems more like a Beer Commerical, than a Video game console commerical.
Disregard any opinion you have about this commercial: The fact that a damn commercial has instigated so much conversation, and the fact that a company would use a five minute short film like this to advertise their product is pretty damn awesome. Also, anyone know the name of the song that plays after they start drinking the water?
The guy at the beginning explains some of the identities of the people there, that they are all stuck in limbo, imagining what they could have been. Then, they all drink the water, and their imaginations become more vivid. This shows that when you play the PS3, you can become all kinds of people, that you take on a different life, if you will.
In my opinion, this is a beautifully, carefully thought out advertisement. You just have to understand it and read between the lines.
This is actually a really good commercial. It's not something many people would get on first viewing, but it is actually really clever. Once you understand, you'll realize just how brilliant and hilarious this ad is.
This ad makes sense now! All these complex situations happening simultaneously. The realism of unrealistic situations. "this is living" ... Kinda smart if u ask me
@HolyNinja147 How is this pretentious comment getting 24 thumbs up. Do any of those people have any idea what he's meaning, or just trying to come off as smart too ? "the realism of unrealistic situations" what the hell does that mean, does it mean anything!?
@HolyNinja147 Well I love this ad, the way it looks. And I really want to get what the sense of it is. I get that the people's dreams are like videogamegenres (football, wargames, girliegames) And I get that the people are on drugs because the drugsdealer hid the drugs near the leaking waterpipe and everybody who's drinking the water is halucinating. But I just dont get this whole methafor. I think its kind of style over substance. You sound so smart, can you explain to me what it means exactly
@manwithouthat44 I just thought about where we are today in games. so many different characters and personalities all supposedly co-existing in real-time (have u recently played L.A. Noire?) The use of real people over virtual actors or in-game footage shows how the system can render game worlds realistically but have unrealistic things happen inside them. Its absurd, but believable. Also, the nude lady is like a god of war tease :p This is living. cheers :)
I love this fucked up commercial.

Also, the nude lady is like a god of war tease :p This is living. cheers :)
