I think the U of M Entry Cadence rocks! Adrian HS here in Michigan uses this on their home games for pregame and halftime. difference is AHS comes out from the field goal lines
This specific rehearsal takes place the week before the season opener, and (at least when I was in the band), it was the ONLY time we got to practice in the stadium all year. The band starts with an on-field entry to get acquainted, and later does a full run through from the tunnel. Since it's the first time in the big house for the year, the quality of the lines is the last thing on your mind. It definitely gets better after that. What a blast that was!
First, let me say that I'm a diehard Buckeye fan and think that OSU has the best marching band around. However, I must confess that I love the Michigan entry cadence and the emotions it can evoke in the opposing crowd. The Big Ten has the best marching bands in the country by FAR, with OSU, Michigan, and Wisconsin as the top 3 in the conference (in my humble opinion).
Why in the world does he suck for saying that the Michigan Marching Band is great? I'm a 100% Michigan fan and I can completely agree with him on everything he said, other than the fact that he's an OSU fan.
i've alwars referred to it as the seizure step, or something along those lines, as it looks like the band is twitching or at least having suffering from epilepsy
I think that MSU's band kicks &$#! as well (well, about as much as a marching band can, anyway)! I love their high chair kick! I have no objective basis for saying that UofM's or MSU's band is better. I just think UofM's evokes a stronger reaction from me, because they're our rival and because of the history of "The Game".
Michigan's pregame is somewhtat antagonistic and I like that! Much different than OSU's, but great nevertheless. I don't like UofM, but I give e'm credit where it's due.
Wonderful! I musta heard this song at least 1000 times, and I never get tired of it! Still brings a lump in the throat, like the National Anthem. Louis Elbel wrote this on a train, on the way back from Chicago, 1898. Michigan 12, Chicago 11. 'We were crazed with joy,' wrote Elbel. 'My spirits were so uplifted, I was clear off the earth...the idea of a big march came to me, and I completed the work on the train that took me back to Monday classes in Ann Arbor.'GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!
If its their only rehersal in the stadium why dont they come out of the tunnel? lol. I'm an osu fan...but you gotta have love for the um band. great sound! nothing like a big ten band pregame. but GO Bucks! haha
Good point. To be honest, I hadn't even noticed! (Construction or wet paint in the tunnel? Late August and final cleanup before the season, anything's possible!) Totally agree on you're Big Ten Pregame comment, and yes, even OSU's! Actually, Especially OSUs. I'm a closet fan of Script Ohio. It's almost as good as Michigan's ;-)
They most likely didn't come out of the tunnel during rehearsal because it takes longer to line up in the tunnel than outside of it in the stadium, and during rehearsal, every moment is important. They probably practiced it at least once in the tunnel, but after that they line up outside so they can get in more reps.
gives me goosebumps every single time - best intro in college football. i saw UT/UGA in neyland and while it was louder, i wasn't impressed at all with the pregame - rocky top was loud but this pregame is way better

You're right. It's a lot better and "safer" to live in downtown Detroit. Or how about the quality area's of Battle Creek or Saginaw aka Sagnasty. I admit Ohio has it's shitty parts, but Michigan has no room to talk.
Well I guess it's a good thing UM is nowhere near any of those cities. For the record I wasn't commenting on the quality of the area. I was alluding to a Chris Farley sketch and joking about the economic status of OSU students after graduation.

Oh my bad. I guess Ann Arbor is the only nice little town in the state of Michigan? All the potholes in the roads and homeless people asking for my soda/beer can is really fun.
The Big Ten has some of the best bands. I have to agree with you. Spartan marching band kick-step, michigans sound is awesome, and osu's traditions. It's really hard to find any bands to beat the three.
Not only does the Big 10 have the best bands but without a doubt the best fight songs: The Victors, MSU, Fight the Team, On Wisconson, PSU, and all the others are pretty good, too. Notre Dame's as good as a Big 10 team and the only other song that comes close is Rocky Top from Tennessee, and I'm sorry, but Fight On from USC isn't nearly as good as everyone says. The Big 10 is the fight song and band conference!
Oh, and USC's band were TOTAL assholes, and I don't use that term lightly, to us while we were there for the Rose Bowl. Come on, stop acting like ur a rockstar and play ur oboe.
Oh, fyi, Ohio State got their pre-game idea from us. Look it up. :P
Yeah Michigan did do Script Ohio first, but OSU has done a few things that Michigan adopted. Oh and not to mention that most of Michigan's greatest players are from Ohio.
Pish-posh. Every school sings that song, and we don't sing it that much, if ever. Now, the script Ohio is in every OSU pre-game performance... you're welcome.
Well your welcome for all the great football players you've had from Ohio, Howard, Woodson, Manningham etc. and don't forget Schembechler. The state of Michigan produces very little football talent that's why they have to recruit so many other states.
I hate that version of The Victors. Not only is it not clever, but it's low class, too. Whenever Spartans, Nittany Lions, or Buckeyes sing it, it just makes them sound like fools.

The Big 10 does have the best fight songs, but who cares? Marching bands are nothing without football, and the Big 10 cannot compete with the SEC, Big 12, or Pac 10 in football
Not bad, a little too much of the M being done, I think.
Take a look at Minnesota's Pregame if you get a chance. The halftime shows may not be too great, but if you see one of their pregames, you'll definately see why; their pregame rocks.
For at least 30 years. If they ever do update it, they need to keep the same drum cadence but add more to the usual 235. There's 150 other band members (the reserves) that sit in the stands during pre-game and don't get to be included. I always feel bad for them.
Yeah, it sucks- but we aim for perfection. The challenges we have every week make sure that we have the best people out there. It's a pride/tradition thing we have.
Eh, I paid my dues- all freshman year I was in reserve block. Not anymore! Whoo!
I love the MMB- all of the extreme hard work is SO worth it. :) Go Blue.
Aww, This was my first ever practice as a part of the performance block after a YEAR on the "field of dreams"/ reserve block. :') So worth it. haha!

you can totally even see it in this video!! the lines of the "M" aren't even straight...
go to an MSU game... the high chair kick they do during pregame sends shivers down even a U of M fan's spine.
i will give you this however... U of M's fight song is a little more catchy.
ozoneavenger 3 years ago
okay, that's fair.
