  • Who fed the troll?

  • Certainly my favourite maritime hymn. It was always sung on remembrance Sunday at the Sinclair Seaman's in Belfast. Beautiful rendition here.

  • Pay particular attention to the "lower lights", and who and why they are...

  • I didn't want to read all the posts to see if my comment is repetitive (Yikes!) but I'm pretty sure this is a combined choir with members of the Men's Chorus, Concert Choir, and Singers. If it was just Men's Chorus, then the director of Men's Chorus would be leading, who is Rosalind Hall. Dr. Staheli, the man leading, is sort of like the head of the choral program.

  • stop bad mouthing the church we should be commenting on this beautiful hymn which, by the way, did not originate in the church.

  • Before you make ignorant comments about any religion you should know what you're talking about. Your ignorance is showing. You know nothing!

  • One dark stormy night a ship was trying to reach Cleveland harbor. Usually the captain could use the city, or lower lights to guide him to the safety of the harbor. They were out, and the ship was lost. More than a great hymn, it is a true story with a profound message that followers of Christ are obligated to guide others to safety.

  • @ superstarch = As all good Mormons do when pressed, you fall back on your standard "burning in the bosom" rejoinder. Why? Because just like we Christians use our testimony of salvation to differentiate between our lives before and afterward, it is something no one can put their hands on and examine. All anyone can do is look at what is the SOURCE of that "burning" and see if it stands up to close examination. The Achilles heel of LDS: archaeology says Joseph Smith was a liar time and again!

  • @tigerlilly66 The source we look at is the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and other scripture that came from Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith, and other prophets of God are men, and they are flawed men. But God uses flawed men to bring about his word. If you base your opinions of the measure of a man, you will fail every time. Including archaeology. It has its flaws. If you seek to disprove the religion, you will through some flaw of man.

  • @tigerlilly66 However, the thing you cannot argue... and I challenge you to do... is dispute the message of the church. It has made good men better, and better men great. Show me that the "lies" produced by Joseph Smith were the ramblings of a con man out to deceive the world. No good comes from deceptive works. The D&C begins with the Lord chastising Smith for loosing the 116 page manuscript and leaves the reader to decide to believe or not without reference to

  • @tigerlilly66 ... outside authority- common sense, science, the Bible, tradition, anything. In those scriptures you face the words simply to harken or turn away. If archaeology was an Achilles heel of the church, it would have done what it did to Achilles... take him down.

  • @Isolation1 =

And indeed, archaeology has done to LDS precisely what it did to Achilles, and it is very EASY to prove. How?

Give me ONE, SINGLE, SOLITARY evidence from geology and/or archaeology to back up the fairy tale of the Nephites and Lamanites and I'll issue a PUBLIC retraction of my words. You cannot do so...CANNOT.

Christianity has thousands of proofs provided by its ENEMIES. LDS has only its OWN to look to for support of itself...a HUGE difference.

  • @tigerlilly66 Oh? And I guess you have participated in the archaeological studies pertaining to these findings? Or is it just things that you have read? I have read an equal amount that shows many evidences of the BOM settings. You cant disprove it anymore than I can prove it.

"And indeed, archaeology has done to LDS precisely what it did to Achilles" ... Im just going to presume by that statement that you are young and naive. People are still going to the church, people are continually being

  • @tigerlilly66 ...converted and they will continue to do so long after you and I are dead. So I ask, how has it taken the church down? It has not. It goes on and continues to thrive in peoples lives.

But you know what, let even cut the Mormon thing out of it. I assume you are at least a Christian. I guess you need all this "archaeological proof" that Christ came to the earth and preached his ministry right? You cant prove all of it, so why do you believe it? Have you scrutinized your own

  • @tigerlilly66 ...belief system that deeply? Or are you resting some of it on faith? Many say that Christ never existed at all, and there is no evidence that he did. So what tells you that he did? Archaeology? I bet not.

You simply dont want it to be true, so you will find only that which will support those feelings. Because, heaven forbid, you actually read the BOM and sot to understand its message...you might actually have to change something about yourself. Something not too

  • @tigerlilly66 ...many people want to do. Whatever archaeological disproofs you come up with does not diminish the message of the LDS church. It does not weaken peoples resolve to be better people, and nor should it. Your attempts to diminish the faith by archeological findings is like saying "Dude, stop trying so hard to be a good person, the foundation of your religion is baseless." Thats a real Christian thing to do aint it? Again, you cannot refute the message. And that is what God wants

  • @tigerlilly66 ...us to hear. I personally dont care if Joe Smith flushed the toilet, stuck his face in it, watched it swirl around and claims to have gotten the message that way... its the message that has the power. Something you have truly failed to see. But thats cool. Live your life the way you want to live it with no shame. It seems that the Christian thing to do is to let those striving to be better, be better, with whatever means they have found without trampling on their foundation.

  • @Isolation1 = Did you bother to read what you just sent me? You DON'T CARE how Smith got his "relevation" from Elohim, but only that he said he did and you've chosen to believe it? You DON'T CARE? Rewind the time machine just 75 years, and in a well-developed, intellectual Germany, the citizens there too didn't care to dwell on what Hitler was saying, but only that he had restored German national pride, pulled the country out of a depression, and had everyone feeling GOOD about themselves !

  • @tigerlilly66 Hmmm, comparing Joe Smith with Hitler... Ahh, so thats what this is all about! Joe wanted to conquer the world! Hey everyone, tigerlilly66 just figured the Mormons. We are out to conquer the world and kill off a race of people to create a super-breed of green jell-o makers.

"I do NOT hate Mormons" (your words) Either you were lying then, or you are lying now. Your hatred for Mormons shines like a new penny.

  • I love this song. It's melody, its harmonies, and its message that we look out for our fellow man, our responsibility to be there for them, to help them find their way to safety, both physically and spiritually.

This was one of my Dad's favourite hymns, as he would always say 'remember, some days your holding the light, other days your the one sinking'.

He died this last December, today is his birthday, thankyou for posting this so I could listen, feel the spirit and remember my Dad.

  • Manuscripts that support the Masoretic Text (Antioch) from which the King James is based = over 40,000

Manuscript evidence for ANY of the LDS "holy books" = 0

This is not opinion or slander of Mormonism, but a simple statement of fact that cannot be refuted by anyone in LDS.There has never been ONE SINGLE shred of documentary evidence EVER produced to back up Joseph Smith's fantasies, other than his own re-writing of the Bible to insert his after-the-fact "events" that make HIM God's prophet!

  • my favorite hymn.

  • @tigerlilly66 -- Rather than languish in your ignorance, it would be a good idea if you'd do some homework on Mormons by studying and inquiring. I used to wonder about some of the things you posted...then I started studying. The Jesus of the Bible is the very same Jesus Mormons worship! I discovered that Mormons are more Christ-like, more Christian than a lot of so-called "Christians" I have met.

The welcome mat is open to all, including you, to come and learn.

  • @DrTerminus = In response to your crack about "homework", please know that I have a brother who is LDS. I have studied the ins and outs of LDS for about 30 years now and have a very firm grasp of LDS doctrine and practice, not that you'll care. I have debated beaucoup Mormons, from stake leaders to bishops. I'm certainly NOT surprised that you would play the "we're more Christian than Christians" card - I hear it about every time I lock horns with you guys. Save the rhetoric for the uninitiated.

  • @tigerlilly66 = My only surprise in your comments is the fact it took 2 weeks to generate an LDS reply!

I've done my homework about LDS, thank you, which is why I made the statements I did. Do you deny that your doctrine claims that Jesus is the "spirit brother" of Satan? If you do, better not let your ward leader know about it, or you'll be on the carpet explaining your heresy!

How about another? "As man now is, so God once was. As God now is, so man may become". Standard LDS doctrine!

  • @tigerlilly66 why would we deny that satan is jesus's brother? he is! he's our brother too. i dont understand why u think that would be bad, just because satan is bad doesnt mean we'll deny hes our brother. its like having a brother here on earth that gets in trouble alot and goes to jail and all that stuff, it doesnt matter what he does, he's still our brother. and heck yea we believe we'll become like our father in heaven! so yea were not denying those statements because WE BELIEVE IN THEM!

  • @tigerlilly66 u do know that the bible clearly states that satan was an angel right? therefore heavenly father IS HIS FATHER. and since we believe that we lived with our heavenly father before we came to earth (its in jeremiah 1:5, look it up) how is it out of the question that satan is our brother? i dont know what lds church your talking about but all my leaders, my bishop, and everyone who i know is mormon dont deny it either. u make like its a bad thing when its not.

  • @tbird09100 = Sure, I know Lucifer was an angel before he decided to replace Jehovah as the ONLY God there will ever be! No, "heavenly father" as you LDS'ers like to call the ONLY God there will ever be, is NOT his father. Lucifer was an angel, not the only begotten (singular) of the Father...HUGE difference, pal !

How many failed prophecies does it take to mark someone as a false prophet? Just ONE (Deuteronomy 18:20-22), yet Joseph Smith was wrong time and time again! Explain this away!

  • @tigerlilly66 okey doke. lets have a nice conversation about this. Ok, so you agree that Lucifer used to be an angel. ALL angels and humans that have been, are and will be on this earth are Gods children. So therefore, Lucifer was/is our Heavenly Fathers child. I will agree that Lucifer was not the only begotten son of the Father, because the only begotten son was/is our Savior Jesus Christ. Begotten means that Christ is the only naturally biological son of God.

  • @tigerlilly66 lastly, I definitely believe that you have done some homework on our religion, and you are informed about some aspects of it. However, what I think you have failed to understand, based on some of your arguments, is faith. not the blind following of someone who claims to be something they are not, but the prayerful searching of the words we are told and that we read. I am not an idiot, and I have definitely searched within myself and the teachings of this church (cont.)

  • @tigerlilly66 and I have found that without a doubt I believe this church to be true. I believe Joseph Smith to have been a true prophet and that Thomas S. Monson is the Lords prophet on the earth today. Nothing you say will take this knowledge from me, or from people who believe similar. You definitely have the right to question and even criticize, but doing so to those who are well informed and have faith and love for the Lord and this gospel will get you nowhere, except more testimonies :)

  • @superstarch = Hi...thanks for the comments. I really do NOT hate Mormons. If I did, I wouldn't bother to debate with you about your beliefs in the hope that something will click. BTW - I was in SLC a couple of weeks ago and walked thru the Temple. Very impressive, but that alone cannot offset problems like the ones I've cited before. Note this quote from BH Roberts of the 70: "The fact is that orthodox Christian views of God are pagan rather than Christian". What then do we have in common?

  • I like this version better then the one that is on lds.org

  • beutiful song. my favorite

  • Outstanding!!. Congratulations.

this is one of my favorite songs i heard it times without count on my mission and i still do

  • Wow, this is uplifting. I sang this tune when I was in Sunday School. It just brings memories, I never knew boys choir could stand for it. It is perfect!....

  • how can i get ahold of this song in MP3 format?

  • This is the coolest song. I love the message and the tune sticks in your mind. it allows me to keep the spirit with me throughout the day. Thanks teacher for showing this song to me!! Even thought it's not a very well-known hymn, it's a real good one!

  • Yes, I love this one! I think this is my favorite version of this song. Be sure to check out my other one I have posted called "I love the Lord", a rendition of "Be still my soul". You will like that one as much!
