Nah, the americans actually do think we do all that. There was a comedy series where two men wearing lumberjack plaid shirts and toques sat on logs outside an igloo, making jokes and saying "eh" all the time. It became the standard for Canadian stereotypes. Their rendition of "Twelve Days of Christmas" went like this:

So apparently there are people gullible enough to believe in house hippos. :D aka think the TV speaks the truth.

@MewSoki My friends and I will sometimes get into a round of "I know, eh?" just for kicks. We also start ending our sentences with "eh" whenever there's a foreigner around, just to mess with their heads.

And then they try to copy us. Canadians might not say it all the time, but we're the only ones who can say it right. Americans say it like this: "Ah know... AIE?!" with special emphasis on the end. It's laughable. Ian Ferguson's "How to be Canadian" has an enire chapter on the sound "Eh".
