RICKSON: "Marcos was a example of a warrior, allways put your work in proof with their students, him as a person represented what he believed, he always did his part as a fighter."
RENZO: "Marcos Ruas is a fantastic man, a guy very hard in his life has made great fights, has always been dedicated, and even though we are rivals of different teams, I admire him as an adversary"
I also admire the fighters of the past, for everything they did for the sport, and without the support that exists today.
I follow the MMA for a long time and I could see the evolution of the sport. Although here in Brazil we are pioneers, was very difficult to establish as a sport, because there were no rules and few companies sponsored. Was a pleasure to help you.
Yes you are absolutely right about what the fighters of the past has done for the present. Most of my favourite fighters are Brazilian and to this day I'm always cheering the Brazilians.
If you don't mind, and if you're not too busy, do you think you can possibly translate what Pedro Rizzo and Walid Ismail were saying, and of course what Ruas was saying??
It doesn't have to be word for word, just summarizing, thanks bro
Ok. Pedro Rizzo was a student at him and said: "People said he was the greatest rival of Gracie and jiu-jitsu, which was the only guy who had the same handicap them"
Wallid Ismail spoke with Carlson Gracie who was a madness RUAS training with jiu-jitsu. RUAS said that this created a great controversy among athletes of jiu-jitsu as Wallid and Murilo Bustamante, who did not admit the Carlson Gracie would train him. (in fact, RUAS was invited ).
Wallid said: "Today the thing is totally professional. I can say that the RUAS is my friend, is a guy I like.
People said that RUAS had to choose a martial art to represent, but he said he wanted to represent his name, which he lost, he would be the loser, not a martial art. He wanted to represent his name, which would come as Ruas Vale Tudo.
In the late 80's, he was invited to an event that saw jiu-jitsu and other martial arts he played the wrestling, making it one of the enemies of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But the fight that everyone wanted to see was between RUAS and RICKSON. RUAS accept the challenge and think it would be the winner, as well as Rizzo agrees.
Thanks again. I knew that Pedro was his student, especially when he had his first UFC fight with Tra Telligman. I had known a little bit about the differences between Ruas and the Gracie family but not much....
from what I know, it seems that Ruas was trained in submission but he was also skilled in the striking, while the Gracies focused only on submission, is that fair to say?
We can say that he was a judo black belt. He began training other forms of striking, as capoeira, boxe, and especially muay thay, which he is a master. He believed in the fighter more than the name of the martial art, becoming the first fighter hybrid (submission and strike) of fighting history. He also represented the wrestling, which had a huge rivalry with jiu-jitsu in Brazil before.
The Gracies defended their name (Gracie Jiu-Jitsu), and believed that his style of ground fighting was superior to all other martial arts. They invaded academies and challenged other athletes.
So is it true that they avoided him? I heard that several times, and if it is true, was it because of his Striking (and ground) abilities or something else?
At the time, he was the most famous fighter that was not from jiu-jitsu. Marco Ruas did not advocate a martial art. It was the only complete fighter. The only person who was able to fight with him was Rickson. This was the fight that everyone wanted to see. There were many opportunities for the two fight, but in my opinion, Rickson runs out.
RUAS was not an ordinary fighter. It was difficult to take him down and often he had control of the ring. He was more complete fighter than Rickson. In my opinion, Rickson lost many opportunities to make good fights at the end of his career, and RUAS would be the most difficult challenge.
I'm a big fan of both and I admire both, Ruas and the Gracies.
But there's one thing that bothers me, I really wish Ruas had beaten Maurice Smith and Oleg Taktarov. I heard that Ruas did dominate the 2nd Taktarov fight but it was declared a draw b/c of time limits or no judging, I'm not sure.
Meanwhile, lets put Rickson aside, Renzo literally destroyed both Smith and Taktarov.
Do you have any idea what went wrong in those fights, I know in the 1st Smith fight Ruas had a knee problem, what about the 2nd one?
Any idea why Ruas couldn't finish Taktarov in their 1st fight in '95? There were judges and the fight lasted 18 minutes.
In '98 I couldn't believe that Gary Goodridge knocked out Taktarov so badly that he was taken out on a stretcher, yet a couple of months later Ruas submitted Goodridge with an ankle lock, that was awesome.
@Abe9096 I remember when I was a kid watching the fight between ruas and taktarov on tv here in Brazil.
In that fight, there was a financial agreement that ruas couldn´t throw kicks because taktarov had an injury on his leg. If he did so, then he would lose, like, half of his purse.
3/4 down the fight, he lost his patience and started throwing some leg kicks on taktarov, losing part of his purse, and swelling taktarov´s leg up to a mellon.
@faberxfullhd Thanks for letting me know about this, I do remember something about a deal not to throw kicks. But I thought the deal was that neither of them would be throwing kicks, and Ruas began throwing kicks only because Taktarov started throwing the kicks, Taktarov had broken the deal first!! I don't know how accurate this is! Anyhow thanks for filling me in bud!!
O estilo Ruas MMA é muito aplicado hoje! Parabéns!!
