@allidock11 I tI think I am inclined to agree wtih you. I will always remind the strings at the end of the song. It takes me back to the Fall of 1986. I was in the 8th grade. It is not the great song I remember.
I had both this and the whole album (a later purchase). Hall and Oates were popular around the world, and this song was also very popular in the UK...
Billboard's #94 song of '86. Wonder what John Oates was doin' , while Darry was makin' this solo album? Daryl hit #5 pop, #11 rock, #24 AC, in Billboard. God bless y'all, and, Merry Christmas!
With all due respect, Daryl Hall gets too much credit for this being a fab song. Dave Stewart was brilliant, making Pachelbel riffs the hook. (see "Pachelbel Canon in D Original Instruments" here on YouTube for a good version.)
ziggy 72170 just like you , had a walkman revelation listening to this blew me away so cool yet powerful ,delivers everytime ,i was in Belgium at the time so this was a real mindmelt
Oh My Gosh,,,, I remember this Song/Album so well (1986) ! I had purchased my "New Sony Walkman", along with Daryl Hall's new Album... New to a this kid was this thing called "Dolby Stereo".. Upon popping the "Cassette" in and Hearing this Song,, I was "Speechless/Catatonic" !! Wow,, (the sound quality) and especially with the ending of this song, hearing the Harpsichord & Violins !!
It's not actually Jeff Lynne, but Dave Stewart, who co-produced the album with him. He is known for giving pop music an orchestral flavor. The strings in this cut, as well as the rest of the album, were arranged by the late, great, Michael Kamen, one of Stewart's frequent collaborators. I always thought this should have been on the CD "Dave Stewart Songbook" with his Rock Fabulous Orchestra, because it works perfectly!
ahh 1986, probably my all time favorite year. the days of the Equalizer, mullets and lost love
^-^

Hit #5 in Billboard for Daryl.

the chorus reminds me of David Bowie's "Changes," and the arrangement is ELO-like, as others have noted.

Not herd this track for about 21 years . Why do i detect a touch of Jeff Lynne of ELO behind this tune ?
ezekiel919 2 years ago
Maybe THAT's why I loved the song back in 86 and have sought it out all these years later after having lost my cassette down the line....!

@ezekiel919 Now that you mention it. It does have an ELO vibe. Reminds me of "All Over the World" from Xanadu.

@mohinderbauer I really thought Jeff Lynne had worked with Daryl to make this song.

I love this song! I loved it when it first came out, but didn't quite understand it. It is truly a great piece by Mr. Hall.
