I lived in South Africa in the late 1960's. Air Rhodesia had Viscounts flying to and from Salisbury (as was) & Bulawayo. They used to overfly my house on the Johannesburg airport flightpath. Lovely colour scheme, Fabulous sights, Sometimes used to go to the airport to see the London flight leave. Super VC10's, 7pm every night. There always seemed to be a Viscount on the pan
Hi Max .. fabulous memories! As I produce aviation DVDs I am always looking for old cine film, video and colour slides .. specially taken in the 1960s. If you have any footage perhaps you could let me know. Cheers, Henry
My first flight in any airplane was in a Trans Canada Airlines Viscount (I think, I was only two) flight from Calgary (the old McCall Field terminal at the SW of the airport) to Vancouver and I'm guessing back on one as well. I do remember them flying out of Calgary for some years after.
Aer Lingus/Cambrian/British Eagle, liverpool airport 1970's skipping school to watch them, jerseys for goalposts LOL, these are a few of my favorite things, and the smell of the kerosene, Mmmmm yummy. the only thing that sucked was the smell of boiled egg sarnies washed down with camp coffee out of a thermos flask. still its made me who I am today. come to Blackpool to watch the 748's get turned over, and relive the sounds!
It's great to hear those old turboprops howl. They were the best planes I ever flew on. Viscounts had windows as large as movie screens and while crusing at 22,000 ft, the views were amazing!
I was there in 95' as load master on Channel Express Electra's. The line up on the pan was tight!!Post office Vicount,Hunting Vanguard and a great DHL convair, Frankfurt in Germany was another great cargo hub, another world,in the crowded crew room pilots were sleeping on the floor!! PropPilots building hours up F27, Saabs,Shorts,..,But the Polar and TNT cargo747 jet jockys got 5 star hotels!
I never flew on Viscounts or Vanguards, beautiful planes though. I love the sound of Rolls Royce Darts or Tynes. Weather they're running or winding up.
I remeber my first holiday as a kid on a plane was from Birmingham to Jersey on a BEA Viscount in the early 1960's and then the next year London Heathrow to Palma Majorca on a BEA Vanguard - no direct flights from the Midlands then ! Both had the red square BEA markings
1963..London to Vienna..Vickers Viscount BEA..night time flight (it was a lot cheaper). Not sure if it was Gatwick or Heathrow..how small these are compared with aircraft of today.
I flew a Viscount in 1961 on United immediately after the merger with Capital, the plane was in Capital colors. I remember the interior was a dark pink color. In 1968 I flew again on a United Viscount. I just loved the sounds of those Darts! Nothing else like them. I also heard Darts on Grummun Gulfstreams.
Like so many others, I love the sound of those Darts. They remind me of childhood holidays on Guernsey, watching as Viscounts, Heralds and Trislanders provided most of the air services to the island. When the airport was busy, you could hear them all from miles away. My first flight was on a Viscount to Guernsey from Southend, where they also had an impressive collection of Carvairs.
Loved the Viscount! I flew on it many times in the 50's in the old BEA red and white livery. I remember feeling very grand passing the engine nacelles with the Rolls Royce logo, and looking out those big round windows.
I flew on an Air Canada Viscount around 1970, Halifax to Boston, remember those big oval windows, looking down at the water and the ships, flying lower than jets, great plane!
Really enjoyed hearing The Rolls Royce Dart again. What a lovely voice. Did work on The Viscount Simulator as a wireman in the 60s. I produced quite a realistic sound, but can't beat the real thing. I was supposed to fly on one from Southend to Ostend. We had a Dakota instead! Mixed feelings at the time, but delighted now.
Thank you for the great comments to my video Gents. Do any of you have any Viscount or Vangaurd video footage? I am always looking for more footage for future DVDs. Thanks again, and glad you enjoyed the clip.
A couple of years ago I visited the air-museum in Bournemouth where I saw an interesting video of a Vanguard. In the video you could see the pre-flight checks, the start-up of the engines and the take off. A lot of the shots were taken inside the cockpit. The video itself was played inside the cockpit of a Vanguard flightdeck.
My second flight was on a Cambrian Viscount from Liverpool to Jersey about 1968- 69, My first flight age 6 was on a Dakota from Liverpool to Newquay Cornwall. I couldnt believe how steep it was walking up the Dakota between the seat to the front great though.
The Dart engine was responsible for more deaf airline employees than any other motor!
