I watched this series with my father back in the 70s when I was a little boy and was mesmerized by it. Most of my dads friends were WWII vets. My uncle drove landing craft at Normandy. My grandfather was at Pearl Harbor, and my grandmother, mother, and aunt, were living on Ford Island until one month before it was hit, at which time they had moved to Maui. And my wife is Japanese. That being said, WWII has always be very real to me. Anyway, thanks a lot "damoosebelly", you da man!!!!

Strategic bombing is foremost a battle of Attrition. Area bombing is ineffective and only hardens and infuriates many people who were formerly apathetic. Bombing, when focussed on targets like radar stations, oil refineries and power stations can greatly interfere with military production. Targetting civilians may make your own people happy that "revenge" has been meted out but killing random civilians does little to "win the war". Nightime area bombing is a moral disgrace AND ineffective.

Millions dead in one night, with no need for pin-point accuracy.

International conventions on the use of gas sprang from this bilateral fear.

It is illuminating that similar resctrictions have not been placed on nuclear platforms. Just this month, Apr. 8, 2010, new talks are being formulated to suggest such a total ban.

Hitler didn't regard all the races of the world as fully human. The Jews he thought, were no better than animals and he wanted rid of them.

He did hate the Russians for sure. But he wanted to capture the country and control it's industrial resources, not wipe them out.

In the case of London he was probably governed by the fear of retaliatory strikes on German cities am much as by morals.

Bombing cities (civilian targets) was a strategy used by all parties in WW2. The "morality" of it is of course irrelevant because we ALL know that it IS immoral. That said, allies would do whatever necessary to win the war. WAR IS HELL! We should never forget what war does to our humanity. After Japan attacked the USA the first way we were able to strike back at them was the Doolitle raid. We scattered a couple of dozen 500 lb. bombs around Tokyo. Terrorism? Yeah... Justified? Probably...

Sadly, the point of war is to kill people and break things. Why? TO break the back of one's foes and convince them that to fight on is foolish. For me, I hate war, but I also hate slavery; thus, if called upon to defend you and your family who would wish to enslave you, I would do all I could to stop them, and then maintain peace. Peace is not lack of conflict, but having the military might to insure that no one wants a war to start with. Sad, ugly, terrifying, but true.

the problem with bombing civilians is that it makes the combatants angrier and the people under siege usually develop more resolve to stick it out. This was true in London and in Berlin. Nowadays bombing of civilians is the only outcome of war...and the bombings will be nuclear. Still feel it's a good idea?

It was not until the 4th Geneva Convention in 1950 that bombing cities was considered unacceptable. During WWII it was considered perfectly fine, especially against the filthy Hun.

nope ... it was restricted. otherwise in nürnberg the german airforce generals couldnt have been hanged (which was right) bombing civil targets only was allowed if weapons, ammunition or troops were hidden in them, or when the were used as fightingplace (is that the right word?) even today its allwoed to bombard hospitals, mosqes, museums or other places protected by the Unesco if they are used to hide weapons or troops .. hezbollah and hamas do it very often to get a win win situation.

But to build replicas of german citys only for testing how to set as much people as possible on fire. (not houses ... people) seems that also on the allied side human rights lost their worth (and dont forget .. they hade to be the good ones, cause the defended the human rights) The firestorms of Dresden Hamburg etc etc where planed. They trained to combust big amounts of humans by setting citys on fire.

no allied commander ever denied that. First small explosive bombs to open roves and windows, and then phosphorus bombs to start the fire. updraft and heat did the rest. some people were sucked out of their shelters and bruned in the air (without ever again touching the ground) to white ashes.

@ bowman2064 This was exactly the same principle which was applied by Le May against Japan. H.E. to break everything up and incendiaries to start the fires. For every firestorm in Germany there must have been at least the equivalent in Japan. Tokyo is a huge city and there was virtually nothing of it by the end.

The trouble with trying to win a war is that sometimes you have to be as bad as the other side. Sometimes worse. At that point morality is very difficult to argue.

you're not aware of any because there weren't any. the only two people prosecuted who had any direct connection to the command structure of the Luftwaffe were Goering (Commander) and Erhard Milch (a Field Marshal). Goering was sentenced, not carried out, for other things, obviously...and Milch was sentenced to life imprisonment, later commuted, for crimes not connected in any respect to bombings of any sort.
