  • The subject of the song is the apartheid in South Africa and the persecution of the Native Americans.

  • This song is about the europeans killing the native americans, particularly the aztecs. Thus the name don't drink the water, it comes form mexico, don't drink the water in mexico. They just wanted people to make the conection.

  • @GodifyYourself about killing and displacing native people from every place they have stepped on. America, Australia, Asia, Oceania...it hasn't stopped, just take a look at actual situation of Wiricuta, Mexico.

  • This song is Sick! I heard it in class!

  • anyone else see this in us history at bg?

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, his ancestors didnt steal shit he comes from South Africa. This is about the killing of American Indians.

  • @82macgyver Really? So then why what made Nelson Mandela's election so special?

  • @82macgyver Really? The British didn't colonize SouthAfrica? or is he African idk actually

  • @HandsomeSasquatch yup. Born in Johannesburg South Africa

  • the album version doesn't do this song justice. neither do much of dave's album stuff. that just shows what incredible talent this band has. dmb for life.

  • I LIKE THIS SONG A LOT.

  • Honestly, I come to this video to listen to this video and all I see is arguments - and the occasional "FUCK VEVO" from the ignorant youtuber. Just listen to the music for once?

  • @benjaminnumerow

Honestly, you're just contributing to all the dumbass comments....Opps, guess I am too.

  • FUCKITY FUCK VEVO!!!

  • I pissed in the water

  • @MsJuju1998daily awesome! hope you got high marks on it :)

  • A GREAT SONG THOUGH!!

  • @MsJuju1998daily me too

  • @kellyjplante71 I dunno why u say poison, my town has always lightly fluoridated tap water ( <1mg/l) and we have great dental health; its good in small doses.

  • @msav111 if its a drug why are they medicating us without consent, and it will poison you if you look on the back of a tube of toothpaste if ingested

  • @kellyjplante71 Who are "they"? you talk like government's some feudal far away dictator when our's is run by the people, and fluoridation is a local town-by-town issue people decide on... Yes, it's a poison if you consume a tube of toothpaste, but you sound like a mindless corporate automaton when you quote warning labels as your source of opinion.

  • @msav111 dude the nazi used it to make the people more submissive it kills brain cells what you are talking about is old info, outdated, and you dont think the gov does these things? if you need flouride buy toothpaste, it should not be given to us without consent, myself i purifiy the water before i drink it there are plenty of vids on the subject check it out yourself. FLOURIDE IS A POISON!

  • 5 people drank the water

  • everyone is sooo caught up on being a prick about something in the video, but do you hear the music???

it's BEAUTIFUL, that's what matters, it's self expression! who the hell cares!?!!, get a clue!

  • Isn't that Alanis Morrissette doing the backround vocals?

  • @Lozie82 Yep! :D

  • @Lozie82 Yes Alanis Morissette is doing the back vocals.

  • @CanadianHorseFace On Spoon, as well?

  • @BlackLink27 Yes Alanis sang on Spoon as well.

  • really? hey, I'll jump on that bandwagon! me too, me too...

  • really?

  • 1:25 LOL My SS teacher showed us this video in class and at the part when the guy holds his head i started LMAO!!!

  • I just want to apologize to all tribes of the Native American people. While the Native Americans did things wrong as well, they also did not ask the white man to come and be imperialistic in their land, they are the true Natives to this land. While I am here, because of our forefathers, does not mean we should not reflect upon the wrongs they have committed in our past. I can't change the past, what I can do is offer a olive branch to all the glorious Tribes of this land and say I am sorry.

  • Erin Brokovich's theme song

  • Dont drink the water, someone cumed on the water..

  • check out 0:01

  • @pearljamjammin...

No cares what we post on youtube right now...

  • we won't be seing no more comments from pearljamjammin. He's computer is probably ****** by now!

  • The ending is fucking epic, and the video completely matches it

  • dave swinging on the chandelier saying "Come out, come out" IS THE SCARIEST THING EVER

  • I cracked up a 3:57... What the fuck.

  • Psychotic brilliance

  • it makes the song shorter, compare vid with just the music, vid 4+ mins just the music 7 + mins.

  • The most powerful lines of the song are missing from the video.

"What's this you say, you feel the right to remain,

then stay, and I will bury you.

What's this you say, your father's spirit still lives in this place,

    Well I will silence you."

I've seen Dave cut these out of a few live preformances alos. Anyone have an inclination why?

  • LOVE!!!!

  • *colonies, sorry.

Anyways, technology can be good or bad. Mostly good- and really, you can't blame the guillotine for existing- isn't it the +people+ who forced the aristocracy under it, after all?

  • While I agree that native americans were treated like shit and yes, it is a historical disgrace for the colonials.. I don't think technology and advancements like computers or infrastructure are things to hate because they aren't natural. Because, believe it or not, technology has ultimately allowed tolerance to spread more now. We have easier access to the mistakes of the past, and we deal with different people by phone, offices, internet, whatevs. So modernization.. it's not so bad.

  • @starmoan87 I agree with you, but America isnt beautiful. It lacks the rolling hils and beautiful countryside of Europe :D.

  • @Mrmilly911 Yes, with only 3.8 million square miles I don't think america has any rolling hills...

  • I wanna live with the notion, that i dont need anyone but me

  • oh come the eff on, these people were eating each other all day, every day...

  • Who's had it worse, the blacks, the indians, or the jews? Muthafpuk anything P.C., politically correct bullshit, gets me sick. He's worrying about the indians, how we did em' wrong, start worrying about the homeless living and starving on the streets of the U.S.!! That's more important than trying to be P.C.anytime, anyday!

  • when he does this live, it's fucking magical.

  • @araex4 every song he does live is fucking magical.

  • @1223JOEY1223 so true lol.

  • Fuck you YouTube and your damn commercials...

  • thumbs up if you think this got more veiws than justin beiber :D

  • that shit

  • One of my faves by Dave. Beautiful song. Really hits home the evils of colonization that has happened all over the world throughout history. He Gets it.

  • @MBaxtonM suck a dick

  • DONT DRINK THE FLOURIDE WATER

  • @kellyjplante71 You're informed! :D

  • @kellyjplante71 it's good for periodontal health tho

  • @msav111 how is ingesting a poison good for you? its no good for anyone!

  • 3:32-4:20 sends chills down my spine

  • The last 2 minutes of the song are haunting, mesmerizing and just downright incredible.

I have one question. Why does this song not have millions of hits??

Seriously, untalented buffoons like Bieber get millions of hit and not this? Come on now.

  • @SpeedKlz bieber who?

  • i get pumped up by this song, like hell yea, we killed em all..great job!

  • These lyrics are EVIL, casue this was exactly the mentality of the settlers way back when its scary.

  • "DAVID MATTHEWS GET OFF THAT CHANDELIER THIS INSTANT OR I'LL CUT YOUR HEAD OFF AND GIVE IT TO THE INDIAN"

  • @patronsaintofpoison - "DAVID MATTHEWS, STAY RIGHT THERE ON THAT CHANDELIER... I'LL BE RIGHT UP!!" *woooohoooo*!!!

  • @patronsaintofpoison LMAO thats a good one, no, seriously.

  • one of the best songs!!

  • Dude looks like Sheldon Cooper. Awesome song though!

  • Stop staring at me Dave!!!

  • Youtube should have a "auto-replay" button or something... I cant stop listening to this song!

  • is it just me or did that look like tupac on the drums at 0:19 ?

    oh, and great song :)

  • Comment removed

  • Great tune. Nice to have Allanis on the back up vocals

  • forever missing leroi

  • LOVE Boyd's hair in this.

  • This kicks ass and so does the Dave Matthews band.

  • when you cant sleep, why not listen to your favorites! I love the art of this video... I love this song.. "and I'll live with my justice and I'll live with my greedy need and I'll live with no mercy and I'll live with my frenzied feeding and I'll live with my hatred and I'll live with my jealousy and I'll live with the notion that I dont need anyone else but me.. dont drink the water...dont drink the water there is blood in the water" prime lyrics
  • Looks like 4 people drank the water.

  • I prefer the long version

  • The latest DNA evidence indicates that Caucasians (Haplogroup X) were here thousands of years before the American Indians (Haplogroups A, B, C & D), thus making white people the real "Native Americans." Do some research on Haplogroup X, Kennewick Man, etc.

  • @boomboom Not trying to be a total smartass but I fail to see the point in your statement. If we were here first no one told Columbus or the idiots who were judging the world flat. I hardly think any of the "who was here first" justifies the genocide of 83 million people. We did the Indians wrong and still do on many levels. It's tough to correct the evils committed on an entire race of people that results in their near-extinction. Like Carlin said when's the last time you saw 2 indians together

  • @indierail Not trying to be a smartass either, but you made a "Learn to speak Native American or get the f**k out!" remark that later got flagged as spam. To that, DNA evidence suggests that white people are the real "Native Americans." The Palutes were an Indian tribe that told white settlers of their (the Indians') battles with a white, red-haired race of giants. The Indians killed off the last of the white race by setting fire at the entrance of their cave. Yes, we still did them wrong though

  • 83 milliion indigenous people and we "discovered" it. Yeah that sounds like an American attitude if I ever saw one. Learn to speak Native American or get the fuck out!

  • my teacher showed us this in school.

    I was amazed

  • @XxImpactXGreatest what school do you go to?! i want to go!

  • @XxImpactXGreatest me too.

  • Ugh, The native americans had the right way to live and right idea for their government. We just came in and screwed up everything. Fuck modernization- fuck this computer and keyboard. Great song- brings up all the feelings Dave has about colonization.

  • Comment removed

  • @pearljamjammin people always ask to see the successes of Communism, and i point to the Native Americans :D very simple people, lived to help eachother

  • @pearljamjammin I don't think they had THE right way to live. At least not for everyone. But yes, given the fact that compared to 1492, there's almost no old-growth forest left today, I'd say their mostly egalitarian horticultural/hunting-and-gathering lifeways were, for them, in their locations, close to being the right way to live. History has proven over and over again that capitalism destroys at least as much as it creates. Our relatively denuded landscape is evidence of that.

  • @pearljamjammin To be completely fair, modern innovation is the reason people now have a life expectancy that is now double what those native people had. I aint sayin it makes it right to steal their land.... BUT It doesn't bother him enough to not live in the land his ancestors stole, or you for that matter. Just sayin....

  • @Coldmystery how do you know life expextancy of native people???? ...can you tell me where you get that info???..

  • @tiburcio9999 A mix of college classes. When the white folk came over even thinks as their simple dentistry increased their life expectancy years upon years past that of those native peoples. Now it is still immoral and wrong stealing their country like that. And that is just one example I thought of.

  • @Coldmystery

Well, I mean yeah, I'm glad my mom's still alive at an age where some people would be considered ancient back then but the effect of that is overpopulation and all the crap that comes with it. Life is a balance- us humans are definitely overwieghing it.

  • @pearljamjammin Never said it wasn't or that we aren't.... but where is the reverting back? It's easy for everyone to say fuck modernization and get a ton of thumbs up for an easy PC comment but where is the video or picture of you throwing away your TV your computer and your central air conditioning? If they had such a perfect Idea on how to live why don't you give up modern dentistry and medicine while you're at it? My point is it's silly to bitch about cause you wont do anything about it.

  • @pearljamjammin I know it right?! I would rather be in a swamp with insects humming this tune instead of my home drinking beer and rocking out to dave. Damn the tecmology!

  • @unabober

Hey, if you want to be in a swamp that's cool. Don't catch cholera. I'd prefer a wooded area or plains myself.

  • @pearljamjammin Thank-you I've been saying that for years. And we were the savages (im native american)

  • @pearljamjammin God I hate my History as a brit. Imperialism and Colonization are shameful acts of greed and exploitation.

  • @Mrmilly911

Hey dude, my great grandfather killed jews in the holocaust. I'm not proud of that but its not what our parents did its what we are going to do.

Not to sound cheesey or anything :D

  • @pearljamjammin did you smash your computer?

  • @blaisfun

Nope, I tried to smash the dam that the current American government made that has swamped thousands of sacred native burial grounds and most of that tribes land. Didn't work sadly.

  • @pearljamjammin well thats a bitch, i wish i could help. it def woulda been entertaining to hear you smashed your computer though

  • @pearljamjammin Progress? Yes. Christian driven Democracy? No.

  • @Shirani118

Progress to what though? Five hundred thousand years from now, all that progress will burn in the inferno of the sun. Two hundred years from now, people won't care how long we lived. Fifty years and no one will care what we posted on youtube.

  • @pearljamjammin Process for knowing enough about the universe to at least expand off of earth, and eventually a far enough distance from our sun. It sounds like a long shot but look how far we've come since the 20's.

  • @pearljamjammin

No one is saying what happened to them isn't wrong, but there have been plenty of tribal cultures that were and still are savage in some way, this isn't Avatar man. And are you kidding about modernization? Medical science and indoor plumbing are two of the biggest factors in health and quality of life. I'd prefer to stay in an era where life expectancy goes beyond 30-35

  • @pearljamjammin

Speaks ill towards computers, but uses one.

    Stay classy, hypocrite.

  • Pretty powerful song. To bad The American Indian felt more comfortable cleaving the skull of a rival tribe with the steel headed axes that The Europeans Traders sold them. Rather than looking at the over all picture. But I guess, no matter what ethnicity you are, humans are the same everywhere.

  • did anyone see this in school?

  • @xXSonOvPerditionXx that sounds better than my explaination of the "blood in the water" so thank you for teachiing me that (no sarcasm)

  • The message of this song is to show Americans shunned Native Americans out of our society and made their race basically disappear. When he means Don't Drink the Water he's warning them because to make them stupid and unable to fight White people put drinking alchohol in their water. They couldn't handle the alchohol and they went crazy over it.

  • @FortLauderdale3 uhm... I'm pretty positive he says don't drink the water because he's referring to all the blood spilled in the water tainting in... "There's blood in the water" ...

  • @xXSonOvPerditionXx It really depends on the way you think of it because he really could be meaning many things. For example, my teacher believes that the water is a metaphor for what people are telling us. He thinks that hes saying that what we are tought isnt even close to as bad as things were so hes saying not to drink that (believe it) and to know what really happened. Im not sure about what i think but i thought id share

  • Such powerful lyrics and message with this song. The video, while slightly trippy, conveys the message well too. DMB has never been my style of music, but I have always loved this song. Maybe it's growling in the end of the song. I don't know. Something really attracted me to this song.

  • This is a good song. They dominate it live though

  • 4:17

    Woah...

  • One of the only bands better live

  • Fuck it. Somebody just drink the water, I wanna see what happens.

  • Epic song. I just wish we could hear Alanis' voice a little more.

  • Am i wrong that this song came out shortly after the death of the Bassist's child? Because i remember being taken back by the mood change at the end of the song and wondering if maybe that aggression was connected to the loss.

  • I love Dave, but this song is infinitely better live.

  • My favorite song from them

  • @kikinicarican94 kiki, what you just described IS human genocide. And to say these words apply to only one moment in time is completely blind. These atrocities happen every day, all over our earth. Stop looking for literal answers and take the words for what they are. Some people dont get it...It's not about being right or wrong. Its about realizing the bottom line. We are all the same human race, if we cant learn to share the earth we will all lose it. All we need is love.

  • "whats that you say? your fathers spirit still lives in this place...well i will silence you" To me Its about human genocide.. and giving a voice to the oppressed. No one owns Earth, we share it. This land is your land, This land is my land. Groo Grux King still lives today!

  • I never fully understand Dave.. he's incredible.

  • I find the song is about when the "pilgrams" came to america and making the natives move off their land. pov of native americans wishing they would get back on the boat and leave them be

  • no room for both just room for me Marlo brando on an airplane :)

  • Some ppl have tire swings, Dave has chandelier swings.

  • this video is bad ass. i wish it had been the full 7 minutes. ):

  • I think its about what is to come on this earth.Read your bible.

  • @7667128lbg i don't have a bible, so how am i supposed to read about it? though i agree with the possibilty of this representing the future, though i think it's more about the past.

  • Sorry, but the economy of the US went into the shitter; buh bye Illegals and guest workers. Some liberal supporter of the illegals want to tell me why the company needs guest workers at 20 dollars an hour? I am a democrat and am sick to death of watching americans wages shifting down. If it is about money for corporations, then I am completely against any sort of amnesty.

  • @MrVodkaking Amnesty is going to happen whether you like it or not! These are the folks who are going to make sure that the old White senior citizens continue to receive their social security and medicare - LOL!

You don't get it. Ha! Ha! Ha!

  • @MrVodkaking immigration good. usury bad. jesus like immigrants who toil in the sun. jesus don't like the money changers.

  • Sorry, but the economy of the US went into the shitter; buh bye Illegals and guest workers. Some liberal supporter of the illegals want to tell me why the company needs guest workers at 20 dollars an hour? I am a democrat and am sick to death of watching americans wages shifting down.

  • love the banjo..

  • perfect song for thanksgiving

  • no my teacher told us that its about the europeans kicking the taino people out of the land

  • Gods, I miss this band. Thank you guys for all the good music and the wisdom.

  • @elrhiarhodan They're still together you know, they're just not touring in 2011

  • (isn't there a verse missing from the video?) "Away away You have been banished Your land is gone And given me And here I will spread my wings Yes I will call this home What's this you say You feel a right to remain Then stay and I will bury you What's that you say Your father's spirit still lives in this place I will silence you" (just after the first verse, the missing part would be the 2nd verse)
  • they played this song in my history class

  • @justnimasta same

  • @justnimasta me to

  • funny how alot of bands that boast tallent now seem to be missing that thing where they sound good live cuz theyre preformers just as much as they are musicians. there needa be more bands like that these days. anyone liked dave on mtv? i thought it was interesting to watch him rate his own music against other people.

  • I think it sounds much better from Live Trax Vol. 6

  • dave matthews is a weird motherfucka

  • You need a T3 connection to watch VEVO without stuttering

  • This song,,,,

I can remember the first time I heard it in my car. It was SO powerful I had to pull over on account of I was too blown away to drive.... That lyric and Alanis wailing in the background.... It was (and IS) an amazing experience...

  • @JoshuaTaylor I didn't know it was Alanis!

  • @JoshuaTaylor Same here. I was in a bar hanging out. I had to stop. Go to the jukebox and see who this was. I stood there for the entire length of the song. I forgot where I was. Everyone around me disappeared. When it ended I felt like I had just experienced something that I couldn't explain. Not many songs can do that to a person.

  • @MBaxtonM "Everyone around me disappeared" Exactly how I felt .... :-)

  • @JoshuaTaylor AGREED!!!!! So many years ago, so remember pulling over back then every time I heard this and any of their songs come on. Many concerts attended and cds bought later-no longer single and have kids even and work in a fancy lawfirm... I still stop whatever, wherever, whoever and LISTEN and sing and sway and dance like no one's watching.

  • ok. @justahchick we watched a live performance of this in my class and he EXPLAINS that it is about the Native Americans. I'll try to find the link again. Either way this song is very dark, but so good.
