I followed your instructions to the letter, but when I open any of the programs i've changed the icon for, they revert to their default icon. When I close them again, they change back to the ones I selected. Any idea why this is or how I can fix it?

Much more easier way. Just put all ur programs you wan't onto the task bar, from C: program files. then goto the location of the task bar. Right click on all of them and change icon. Then right click task bar open task manager and clck processes and end explorer.exe then re-open it after about 3 seconds. viola ur icons are changed.
