  • fuck yeah man awesome tut.

  • Heh, super 'bass'ic

  • WHO THE FUCK WANTS TO SEE YOUR FACE

  • May i ask what does this sub bass help? Im new to these stuff :D

  • Comment removed

  • Something I've always done with my sub basses is creating a lowpass filter and turning the resonance up to about 90 and tweak the low pass filter so it's resonating. There's a sweet spot on it somewhere that makes subs really respond. Then you can send it through a distortion unit for some tone and then lowpass the high end of the distortion and you'll have a speaker shaking sub that sounds great.

  • nice tip on pitch lfo!

  • Glitch Hop producers know their shit. Ask some tool dubstep producer and they wont know shit.

  • @GarenDJ Where the hell did you get that? If there is one category that knows how to make their subs than it's Dubstep producers mate.

  • Comment removed

  • wtf. sine sub basslines are lame! what's the secret?

by the way you can click file - new sound, and only THEN u get the REAL default preset.

  • Super Bass-Ic hahahh bad joke xD

  • What do you use for that motion blur?

  • after creating a nice sub .....is a good thing to side chain it to the hidden kick ? or i should use separate compression ?

Great video btw.....u are really good on explain complicated things and make it easy to understand ;)

  • bring that note ote

  • This is fucken sad, how did I end up here from production tutorials?

  • hey man, i used your tutorial for a remix! if that's okay with you!?

hope so, because it's already finished.

  • @peraatje and with your tutorial i mean, ur voice..

  • Turn intensity down to get ride of resonant frequencies.

  • Thanks tom cruise.

  • sorry... but this too nerd, especially the first comment

  • Some one please help, i always here a little click / cracking sound at the start of each note..?

  • @xbox360boy66 its because the volume envelope "cuts off" the bass in the middle of a cycle, so just add more attack and release and it'll be fine

  • sub bass.. remains a mystery to this day..

  • hey man good tutorials..

I have a question tho, wouldn't the thump at the start of the sub be kinda pointless if you are sidechaining it in dance or dubstep? I always sidechain my sub cause dubstep is pretty bass heavy and i need my kicks to smack people in the face, the same with my snares.. Just wondering if there really is any need to the thump at the start!

    thanks

  • haha this was exactly a year ago. keep it up. hope all is well in new country

  • THANK YOU VESPERS this is AMAHRZHING!! and WHOEVER DISLIKED THIS is a FUCKING CUNTHOLE! THANKSSS

  • how to avoid the little noisy "clic" at the end of the sound ?

  • @djliomaliaslimic increase release time a fraction until it's gone

  • CTRL Shift + M is the tightest thing i've learned in a long time. thanks

  • @grimejuggal0 take that back Shift plus up arrow

  • I didnt heard anything =/

    horrible speakers

  • 0:33 super BASS-ic HURR HURR herp derp

  • HELPFUL =) thnx

  • The best tutorial i watched WELL DONE!

  • Hi Vesper, great tutorial. No BS, just the information we need in great quality. But for this sub bass tutorial.. I'm getting a lot of clicks and pops at the start of my notes with Massive in Ableton Live. Is it because of my sound drivers or is it something with the synthesis? Do you have any suggestions?

  • any suggestions on how to maintain the perception of sub frequencies for bass lines on bass-challenged speakers such as ipod buds. would harmonic distortion from compressiin bring out some low mids? low pass filter with a bit of resonance around 100hz? suggestions?

  • how do you filter the sub bass out of other instruments being used in the same track as the sub bass. i dont want the kicks or the wobbles to hit the bass, only the sub bass. if you show this in a tutorial could you send me a link or just give me a simple answer here, Thanks

  • What's that X-Y grid in the clip view that you double-click on to open the Massive window? I don't have the synth so I'm not sure what it does, if anything... just curious.

  • Thanks :)

  • you're right... it is super BASSic. bahaha

  • Man you have no idea how grateful and excited I am that I have stumbled upon your tutorials tonight. Can't even put it into words right meow. Thanks, I guess.

  • Like a BASS!

  • hey man great video! quick question tho: Every time a note begins and ends i can hear a clicking sound. I dont know if its my headphones or if its somehting with the the instrument

  • @hitman7290 I find it does that to me when the attack and release are absolute zero. Try changing them 50-100ms. Maybe DJ Vespers has a better solution though.

  • this is great, but i get a click on every hit of the note

  • 3:53

    Bass Cannon

  • thanks for that it has really helped

  • Thanks mate, needed to know how to create a sub bass, i've always just done a patch on massive and never bothered

  • Hi stupid question but how do i stop it from clipping thanks??

  • creating sub-bass is ... super bass hic

  • thank you

  • thanks for this, the only one useful subtorial on the whole interweb!

  • Grade A tutorial mate. I thoroughly respect that fact that you actually EXPLAIN things!! Most people don't- they just accidentally make a sound- and then say "Just do THIS to make THIS sound"... so thank you very much Vesper. :)

  • This is a great tutorial vid, thanks for sharing it! You should know that Sine wave subs tend to disappear on less than ideal systems though, Saw and Square waves produce nice harmonics that make the sub presence more defined on any system. Maybe an idea for a follow up? ;)

  • @DotstorMusic Because if you want to be a good producer you should understand how to use a synthesizer. A sine wave sub bass is one of the easiest things in the world to make anyways. Did your mom chew your food for you when you were a kid? Jesus.

  • @DJVespers thanks for this beautiful comment

  • @DJVespers HAHAHA I think that kid DID just get fed (and chewed up for that matter).

  • and everybody else who want this on the first page on youtube favorite this video its the most important thing, so it can help other ppl too.

  • hey djvespers, this helped me alot! and i checked your soundcloud nice tunes man. keep up the good work! liked, fav and subscriped ;)

  • Hey Vespers...really great video...i have one question about Massive: when i load in my daw massive and once is open, i choose a sound a play it...good....when i start playback to record that sound, it's arpeggiated...i don't know why...so ifi play sounds while other stuff is not playing is good, when i push play...disaster....Maybe you know the cause? Thanks a lot!

  • I love the way you explain things in detail, like REAL detail, not just, "Go here and click this, and it'll do a bunch of stuff you don't understand." Great video, gonna have to check out more of your stuff. Big thumbs up ;D

  • @Lawjadr Cheers! Glad you liked the level of detail. Thanks for watching!

  • Ableton's piano roll sucks soooo much :)

  • @MutantCheeseburger Your username rocks so much! Really, I love it.

  • @DJVespers haha i don't like it anymore, I dont know. it's dry.

  • can we just use the sub bass plugin in logic?

  • @SGwizard1 I wouldn't know. I don't use Logic.

  • @SGwizard1 yes of course, it's only a preset for NI Massive, it has nothing to do with what host application you're using

  • @SGwizard1 no .. its just do beef up bass if its lacking bass... u can juse every sine wave generator in logic start with EXS 24 and just open it with the initial setting (no preset)

that is a sine bass note than play a low not and fiddel a bit with the amps and the LFO settings as DJ VESPERS

  • @SGwizard1 as long as you use the same plugin the synthesizing step isn't different for other workstations such as logic, FLS etc etc

  • Have the release set a little more open as this will get rid of the click sound. also your attack should be slightly late to remove the initial click sound.

  • @MakoMusicOfficial Yep, good comments. Careful on the release time though, too long is bad as well.

  • @DJVespers Thank you so much, this sub bass was exactly what my mix needed. I find that widening both the release and the attack ever so slightly helped to get rid of that unpleasant "clicky" sound. Also, being that I wanted my kick drum to fire off at the same time with the bass, I thought it would be a good idea to add a slight decay and sustain. Now, my kick and bass are working together to produce a rich and detailed low end. Happy mixing!

  • YOU'RE AWESOME. GREAT TUTORIAL!

  • very helpful, thank you

  • very helpful tut. thx man :))

  • Your macprovideo for Drum rack is amazing. So much good info...

You should make one for massive too!

  • @YurtleTheTurtle Glad you like it. I think they already have ones for all the NI products.

  • Thanks man! really helpfull

  • what about making pitch -24(for the sub part in sub bass haha)? and running through high pass filter to clip off higher freqs? i guess you could just eq it that way too. your vids have helped me so much thanks for all the effort you put in

  • @SoundMedik Hey hey. I don't pitch down my oscillators really, I just play it lower on the keyroll. And for a highpass filter, it cuts out low frequencies, not high ones. I usually do this with an EQ afterwards if it needs it, but I tend to leave a lot of highs in my bass.

  • @SoundMedik Just to tell you what you just said:

"I want a highPASS filter to cut off the highs"

sorry but doesnt make any sense?

  • @Alxbeginner i meant lowpass damn chill out

  • @Alxbeginner i asked that 6 months ago you think i don't know what it is now? i obviously meant low pass at the time i just got it backwards

  • Not sure if this has been said before, there's a vibrato feature in the Osc tab which i find much easier than assigning LFOs to pitch to do vibrato.

  • thanks :) this cleared up so many questions i had about making subbass using massive!

  • Super BASSic.

  • that shift up trick is actually going to save me SO much time for drops hahaha

  • 86 people likes, 0 people dislikes... impressive :P

  • Made my street have a earthquake thanks bro!

  • You're AMAZING MAN!!!!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!

  • A+ VERY HELPFUL THANKS BUD!

  • @s4oop good spotting, i meant characteristics if the sound. still any tips on the tick? ive sampled a sine, the used a crossfade to get rid of it but the quality of the note diminishes every semi tone out of the original note, which is an issue when im using octaves of difference

  • How do i draw notes in? It doesnt show up. Sorry for being such a retard, im new with ableton

  • @BGthedrummer im sur u'd have found it out by now but click on the note spreadsheet at the bottom with the piano keys. if u cant find it press Shift Tab. alternatively record it in using a midi keyboard. i highly suggest reading the ableton manual that came with the program. if u got the program illegally you can still doenload it off the website for free, but remember if u dont own a license you cant claim copy write to any thing you create i.e cant get signed or make any profit from your music

  • @BGthedrummer

Shift-B will toggle Draw Mode on and off. Turn it on to draw your notes in, right click to change the quantization or type of notes being played, quarter notes eighth notes... etc.

  • Vespers. what this jojo said. the clicky sound is really bugging me

  • @chiefpaladin Yeah, I hear ya. Play with your envelopes until the clicking disappears. Attack and release time. You'll find a combo that will eliminate or reduce the clicking. If you're running a sub bass sample as opposed to synth, clicking is typically a result of having snap disabled or crossfades/looping not set properly. Cheers!

  • @DJVespers easy way to get rid of the clicking is by: clicking eq tab in massive then reducing high shelf

  • @chiefpaladin Try putting a lowpass on it and play with the cutoff untill the clicking noise is unheard but your sub bass still sounds ok. Hope this helps! =D

  • @chiefpaladin .. U can try hi-passing the sub to around 300hz .. then u get no annoying clicks :-)

  • @chiefpaladin - Hi-pass around 300Hz .. gets rid of the clicks , and u still got ze bass !

  • hey Vespers, how do you get rid of the annoying tick massive makes when you hit and release a note? its a sound covering all the frequencies so filtering it out doesn't really work plus that ruins the harmonics of your wonderful sine wave

  • super basic...:3

  • really helpful tutorial,thx

i got a question too: i have an akai mpk mini, how can i map the 8 knobs to the knobs of an vst?

  • Eating dinner while watching this tut lmao, good work, thanks!

  • @linki33 You like a side of BASS with your potatoes?

  • @DJVespers haha ohyesyes!;)

  • This saved me so much frustration and heartache. I recently discovered Massive, so I came back to the producer(Joke, I know leave me alone) scene. Fell in love with what i could do with massive, but what always held me back was the gaudy sub bass I could produce with what I had before. Now that I understand what makes a sub, I've got some... Dare I say it... Massive ideas. Thanks a bundle, Vespers.

  • @BanditOMG Hey mate. Very glad to help out. Now go piss off your neighbors with that nasty subbass!

  • @Splurgeyourheadoff It's the super low bass frequencies. 30 hz to say 60 or 90 hz. Felt more than heard, but super important.

  • super BASSic

  • @JustinMPerea LOL. Cheers!

  • whats a sub bass good for?

  • @laz0rbra1n Pissing off your neighbours ;)

  • Hey Vespers, Im still learning my musical theory. Im wondering if when using sub bass you should always mirror the notes of your bassline, or if you can use other notes in the right scale to go along with the bassline? Hopefully im saying that clearly enough.

  • @NuphoriK Yes, IMO, absolutely. Sub bass is a layer that plays with your main bass and they should be perceived all as one. Cheers!

  • Hey Vespers, Im still learning my musical theory. Im wondering if when using sub bass you should always mirror the notes of your bassline, or if you can use other notes in the right scale to go along with the bassline? Hopefully im saying that clearly enough.

  • Awesome, cheers man!

  • that wasnt too much it just wasnt what you were going for.

  • @TehSaone ?

  • @DJVespers lmao sorry i do stupid stuff when im stoned.

  • @TehSaone what does that even mean? this a great sub bass tutorial

  • nice video man, have you got the sub bass from massive uploaded onto the internet to download it? ive got ableton but i havent got massive so im reli struggling to find way of making a nice clean sub bass. help wud be apreciated. thanks

  • @MistaMase102 Do you have Operator in Ableton? If not, I'm sure you can just Google "free sine wave sample" There will be tons.

  • NICE! Thats cool, thanks for the up on this Tutorial

  • Beautiful man, great talent. Btw since I am starting with ableton what virtual synths and softwares would you recommend, I am thinking of massive first. You sure have a lot of synths there ... thanks and keep doing it

  • @Syzer2 Massive is quite complex for a new user to synthesis. I'd recommend something simple like Operator from Ableton.

  • just to add my 2c. you can fine tune any knob by moving it while holding the left ctrl.

  • @SwitchUpBroadcast Good call mate. Thanks for the comment.

  • GREAT TUTORIAL! You are awesome, this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for!

  • @AudioProph3t Cheers! Thanks for watching.

  • GREAT TUTORIAL! You are awesome, this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for!

  • ummm..im sort of disappointed i didnt hear the "vespers...vespers veeeeeeeesssssssppppppeeeers" intro..

    i feel cheated...

  • @dopemcee LOL. Sorry to disappoint ;)

  • Can you make a tutorial on how to make the sub-bass sweep down?

You know the sub downsweep used in basicly all trance tracks at the moment :)

I am guessing it is done by using the pitch, but I can't really make it go as low as I would like.

  • @FinalFragment I figured out a way to get close to what I was looking for now. I used the 1 Env with a rather high decay and no level, then it sweeps from the pitch settings down to the sub freq.

    Thanks for the tut :)

  • @FinalFragment Nice work mate. Cheers!

  • Hey all, Thank you VESPERS!!!! coming through in the clutch yet again...

    Recommendations:

1.Use the built in EQ effect on Massive to lower the sub even more!!

    2. if you have izotope Ozone use the default preset near the bottom called bass maker, it will make your whole house wobble....

Once again thanks Vesp, your the shit.

  • @Extremequip4u Nice tips. Thanks mate!

  • you are a helpful fellow. cheers

  • @sammypotato You're welcome. Thanks for watching!

  • Good tutorial. Sub base is just a modulated sinewave nothing too fancy.

  • @riskzerobeatz Totally.

  • thanks man :D, synthesized kicks..

Is it only used to layer sampled kicks or can it be used to make your own kick like in logic?

  • @KillTheFiasco You could make your own entire kick using pitch envelopes and bass samples, yeah. They'd sound pretty clean though, so you'd likely want to layer them with an acoustic kick. Cheers!

  • interesting tutorial cheers, never realised it was so simple to create sub bass :-)

  • @neo36uk Yeah, sometimes simple is better. Cheers!
