  • Insperato62 who mentioned Edward Longshanks? Just providing an answer to a user question. Proud to be Scottish AND British actually

  • @Beaker11000 - I fully understand you are a proud people, so are the ordinary English in a different way.We admire & appreciate the Scottish military contribution over the centuries (tho' I gather you no longer like being called Jocks?) but we are sick to death of the continual harping on about Edward Longshanks etc. Please move on.Even a Scottish MP said your national anthem was racist (a new folk song!!).We get the message.Time for total independence.Good luck.

  • Many Highlanders at Culloden felt betrayed by the French who were supposed to send reinforcements to help the cause. One way of gaining revenge was for the Highlanders to join the British army and fight the French in later wars. It was also a way of keeping their traditions after Culloden since wearing the kilt was banned except in Highland Regiments. Scots people are proud and so would never do a job half heartedly hence the Scottish regiments built a reputation as formidable fighting units.

  • Garden2010city it’s much more complex than that. It wasn’t the Scots against the English at Culloden it was the Jacobites (loyal to the Catholic Stuarts) made up largely of Highlanders and people from the north of England against the Government forces (which contained English units, Lowland Scots and some Highland clans) who were loyal to the Hanover king.

  • PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME: I'm foreigner in the UK so I do not understand following problem .I think that Scotts didnt like English after Battle of Culloden etc. so what was the point for them to fight for the Queen and serve in the British Army .Even if they had to do that to avoid prison(national service etc.) why they tried hard fighting for the nation they didnt like. Why they didnt surrender easily and didnt do very poor job on the battlefields like Italians did during WW2?Thanks for answer

  • Where’s the Kilt ...... ?

  • @palus666

True, but it seems that dickheads from all nations seem to want to use YouTube to talk about things of which they have little or no qualifying knowledge.

  • God save the Queen

  • What a Regiment! Proud to have served.

  • @palus666 All that said, there really is only one country Americans have unconditional respect for, and that is the U.K. When push comes to shove, e.g. the Falklands, there is really no debate about which side we will support. In that sense, we are in many ways carrying on British traditions. We have fallen short ( yes, especially under the cretin G. Bush), just as Britain did during its imperial era. Nonethless, I do think the world is a better place because of the US, and the UK. Cheers !

  • @palus666 Instead of becoming the imperial overlords of Europe, we spent billions to get Europe back on its feet. Churchill himself called the Marshall plan "the most unsordid act in history". We fought in Europe and in the Pacific, and with sacrifice and heroism. To say our "ass" was kicked in Pearl Harbor is something of an insult. The Japanese were certain we would surrender after PH. Your statement is like saying "the Nazis kicked your ass with their fire bombing". (cont)

  • @palus666 We were fully aware we would be drawn in sooner or later. In grammar school, one of my teachers was escaped Dachau. She told my class that she loved America for its conduct after the war. We had the only nuclear bombs, and we could have done anything we wanted. We did not. WW I led to Ww II because the European powers failed to learn the mistakes of so many previous wars fought on European soil. It is almost as if Europe engaged in tribal warfare every generation or two. (cont)

  • @palus666 Please accept my apologies for ignorant yanks. We do have our share of them. I try to be impartial, but I am an American, and the grandson of British grandparents. But to say we entered the war only because of the Japanese attack is a bit of a stretch. It was almost as if we were with the leadership of FDR almost begging to be attacked. Lend Lease, other aid to the Allies, and cutting off the trade of commodities with Japan made that inevitable. (continued). ..

  • I Love Scotland

  • BLACK BEAR, GREAT!

  • @jancro70

Gut das seh ich ein xD

  • robbie barry 2nd batt fell at ypers

    died etaples 1917

    we've not forgot..

  • For the record America did not come into the war to hel anyone, The Japs attackrd them and the Germans declared war on thembefore they joined the fight, again for the record if anyone should be tahnked its the Russians THEY WON THE WAR FOR US.

  • @Dhbrydon hasn't anyone told you that arguing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics? even if you win, you're still retarded...

the best advice i can give you is, stfu already...nobody cares

  • @gregtr82

I love that thanks you for a great laugh

  • Have some respect please you igrante people, and know what u talking about first

  • und die spielen Preußens Gloria weil.........?

  • Yay!i was there,fun times x

  • England+Scotland=Success.Read the History.

  • lets just put it this way if it wasn't for scotland...england wouldn't be what it is today military wise...if you read alot of history about scotland and england you would know.

  • Akropiss,

If those naughty folks are speaking English, they are probably American; the same mob that helped you Brits retain your Royals and your language.

Who knows, you should be speaking German.

Europeans hate Americans while things are OK in the Old World, but when in trouble you seem to overlook our faults and welcome us with open arms. Why is that?

  • @xpnterdos09 I think "akropiss" might be Canadian????

If you must jump off the deep end, Yank, get your facts straight!

And whilst everyone loves a Yank at a party, it's nice the way you always seem to wait till near the very end before turning up!!!

    Er......thanks?!?!?!?

  • first you're saying bullshit about england and then we do appreciate americans we just hate your goverment and your feodal texan politicians^^

  • @xpnterdos09

hey you posted that 6 months ago but you really should come to London, Glasgow, Edinburgh and meet people here in the UK. no one hates america, in fact if any nationality is concerned Britain loves the yanks more than they anks themselves. but even if America never entered the war, Germany would never have won because it's just a stragical nightmare to occupie so many nations especially Britain. the war still would have been won but cause of the Russians and yanks it ended quickly

  • Every time I see the Scots Guards I think of the time I was in London just watching a guard marching and impressed with the discipline. An America tourist (I'm American) was being disrespectful-waiving and shouting-and I grabbed him and pushed him away. Every English person around came up to me and said well done. In speaking to them, it turns out that people are disrespectful quite often (not just Americans). That is unacceptable - NEVER DISRESPECT THE GUARDS

  • @realityright You're right, people forget that they're trained British soldiers, some have seen action in the middle east etc, then they get mouthy tourists messing around, taking pictures and trying to put them off. You wouldn't do it to a soldier in combats...like you said, show them a little respect.

  • this was my troop

  • thumbs up if ya hate the frogs

  • And they say they should get rid of the queen. Bollocks to that; i'd rather give my life for someone that gives a damn about the people and honourable tradition of this country than those money grabbing life destroying bastards sitting on their arses in parliament.

  • I'm Dutch and I'm proud on my British brothers they helped liberate my country in world war 2 and together with the French, Spanish and Dutch the British helped to civilize the world. Long live the Anglo-Dutch alliance and long live Western Europe!

  • @juultjuh99 WELL SAID MY FRIEND.

  • @juultjuh99 Nice to hear were not hated by everyone :D And yeah Long live the anglo - Dutch alliance! and long live western europe!

  • still the best in the houshold division long live the scots guards BEV HILL (HILLY THE FOOTBALLER) EX 1SG

  • Looks good lads. I did the troop in 86, number 2 guard, we were getting ready for a tour of South Armagh, lot ofLleft Flank were away on a course so we got a chance to do something other than street lining. Was a great day.

Ex C Company 1st Bn Scots Guards, back in the time we had 2 Bn's.

  • i was there proud day

  • i was one of them 1 st battalion scots guards right flank lost my ni medal that day

  • can someone tell me why they play the melody of "prussia's glory" (preußens gloria) from 0:48 - 1:05 ?

  • @beidlgsicht

Preussens gloria is usually played because the daughter of Queen Victoria, Princess Victoria became the wife of Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm III and mother to Wilhelm II. So the bonds btwn UK and Germany were very tight and as a sign of respect towards Wilhelm II (who was also appointed Field Marshal in the British Army), the Guards' Fifes and Drums usually played this march (Wilhelm's favourite along with Hohenfriedbergersmarsch by King Frideric II) during particular celebrations.

  • @beidlgsicht Might be in recognition of the Prussian aid at Waterloo. Or possibly the German heritage of the Monarchy.

  • I was in this troop moan the flank

  • scotland the brave :P love this song

  • @gimpyraver true that whiles they aren't a SCOTTISH division but rather a GUARD division. their roots are traced back to Charles I who commanded the Marqius of ARGYLL to raise the troop. thus they have a pipe band.

  • Yes, Since the Queen is the authority to grant the Colours.

  • what's with the flag on the ground?!?

  • It's bowed to the Queen. Bit different from your version as I understand it, where you don't let the colours touch the ground.

  • gotcha...interesting...

  • @gregtr82 it symbolizes the blood that has been spilt on the battlefield, during trooping the colour is the only time you will see the flag touch the ground

  • why don't they wear kilts ?

  • Because theyre soldiers, not stereotypes

  • In that case, why the bizarre hats?

  • The 'bizarre hats' - as you call them - are called 'bearskins', and are a battle honour from 1815 and the Battle of Waterloo.

After the 'Foot Guards' (as they were then known) had been largely responsible for repulsing Napoleon's Imperial Guard near he end of the battle (the first and only time this ever happened to Napoleon's Imperial Guard, by the way) a very impressed and grateful Duke of Wellington asked the Foot Guards to choose a battle honour.

  • @Morganfrost A Battle Honour awarded the Foot Guards subsequent to the Battle of Waterloo (18th June 1815).

Napoleon's Imperial Guard used to wear a bearskin hat (albeit with a black leather facing). The Imperial Guard had never been defeated in battle before, in 20 years of fighting - not once.

At the climax of the battle, Napoleon - as a last ditch measure - sent his Imperial Guard straight up the middle at the British Guards, who first stopped them before breaking them and driving them off.

  • As I understand it only the Highland regiments traditionally wore kilts.

  • Highland regiments wore kilts and Lowland regiments wore trews (tartan trousers). However trews, along with kilts and tartan, were considered to be part of a foreign "savage" culture by the Lowland regiments upon their formation in the 1660s so they wore the standard British uniform until after the Jacobite rebellion and the reign of George IV, when they adopted trews. This actually led to the civilian belief that trews are Lowland dress as opposed to kilts which are Highland dress.

  • @MaxRWF

    scots guards aren't scottish regiment

  • @gimpyraver Your dead right there Jimmy they are Japanese.....where oh where do you Nuts come from?

  • @gimpyraver

your right. they are a british regiment just like every other regiment in the british army.

  • Wait here! I would like to see them just walking for a change. Would the Queen flip?

  • I love British military traditions. We had that in Germany, too, till Hitler came around and fucked everything up...

  • Yep, it is too bad. There were a lot of traditions in Europe that basically disappeared after the war. The Communists had a big hand in ruining things too.

  • The Rawke,

Remember there are a few German military pieces played-as you can hear Preussens Gloria, and I've heard also the Papenheiner

    Gruss

  • It's not only the music (though I have to admit that if I had to choose between the British Grenadiers and Preussens' Gloria, I'd always take TBG;-)), it's all the traditions. They were abadoned, which means that the Wachbattailon is wearing stupid helmets and try to build up their own tradition. EPIC fail...

  • wish I spellt Pappenheimer properly.Yes, the German military traditions, together with the stechschritt should never have been abandoned.

You're right, no traditions are a big minus, and yes, German soldiers today look a bit "lost" I'm sorry to say.

Shame, because your military traditions were so great.

  • Well could've been worse, I guess. Though I'm totally okay with our military (hey, we got probably the best tank you can get - I don't want to read any comments about the Abrams) but a bit less stupid helmets and a bit more serious tradition would be great.

  • must have the Leopard..it is a predator

  • Rawke, try a search on youtube for "the black watch marches into town" and a tell me what you think of it?

  • ave seen that an its shit hot ;)

  • First: Scots! I was three times in scotland, I love the scots;D!

Second: Black Bear, I love it, god save your countrie.

  • LOL, yea, "toy soldiers" kicked a little Corsican's ass. Sunday 18 June 1815.

  • Yes, with the help of our German friends lets not forget-good old Blucher.

  • yes but evidence seems to point now that Napoleons army at Waterloo was already retreating by the time the Prussians got there!

  • @nrjelley

    All the better!

  • oh yea, it's not your country, don't worry about it.

  • And we made half the world you stupid frog.

  • @WiseManFoolMan People forget the only reason the British Empire dissolved was because we spent a great deal of moneh saving those french frog fuckers... TWICE. Bankruptcy ftw.

  • @WiseManFoolMan, half the world and the whole civilised portion. God Save the Queen!

  • Only joking, it was marvellous.

  • There are thousands who watch the trooping every year - with a very critical eye....because they've done it themselves in past years. They straighten up and grow at least an inch taller as the pipes and drums and massed band s strike up 'Hielan' Laddie.' - and the ols swagger comes into their step as a cheer rises up from the crowd .

  • The formations they do are soo precise their inch perfect!

  • They're not on opposie legs, they carry swords on thier right whereas the rifles are carried on the left, therefore they swing opposite arms.

  • Its a tradition going back over 350 years

  • The only way for the squad leaders to swing their arms forward at the same time as the OR's would be for the squad leaders to be out of step, or to carry their swords in their left hands!

neither of these would be very practical.

What they are doing is perfectly correct.

  • Hurrah for the Scots Guards, Rule Britannia!

  • scots guards are the best in the household division... the household division is the best in the infantry... i guess that means that we are the best.

  • well what do they say about the army?.... BE THE BEST so nuff sed :)

  • i was in that escort i was centre man in f coy when the pipes came on it sent a shiver down my spine great day one of best days of my life joanne guest the glamour model took us for pt in the morning lol even better

  • This is the first time ever I heard bagpipe in the Trooping the Colour, what a joy. See the shoulder arm, that's fantastic, just perfect! A good drill example~

  • It's the Scots Guards. How grand.

  • UP THE GUARDS.

  • arnt they grenerdeirs? not scots gards

  • The ones trooping the colour are scots guards, and you hear their bagpipes, too. Grenadeers and others also attend - usually severl of the five foot guards regiments are massed up. Very difficult to make the difference, you have to see the plumes, buttons etc.

  • the year british handed over hong kong to china.

  • Okay, I am making a comment that will get me attacked from both sides but here it goes... Okay, put the tradition aside for a second, wouldn`t it be nice to have an army that uses both types of marching styles. One WITH ARM SWINGING and one WITHOUT ARM SWINGING? For instance. Use arm swinging for display of a more aggressive posture and keep the arms at the side for more solemn marches? Maybe thisis already done and I don`t know. The arm swinging is exciting but it makes a bit hectic perhaps

  • arm swinging is used in quick marches, no arm swinging is used in the slow marches

    =D

  • If you look at film of the Guards from even as recently as the 1920s, you will see that the arm swinging when British soldiers march was not as pronounced as it is today. The American drill is actually archaic British drill....if it was possible for us to have seen the 1st Duke of Wellington's army marching (ie approx 1797 to 1815) they would have marched then very much the way US soldiers march today - with minimal arm-swing.

  • for my Americans friends !! why the the arm swinging ? Simple,,, it forces air (ie ) oxygen into the system,, where as the Usa marching, method, looks like all your men, have Anal retention problems, !! and are afraid they may Shit themselves if they move,

  • What a wonderful sight the Scottish Regiments are! Brave, bold and courageous.

My only concern in political. George Galloway is a total traitor to the Scots who have died fighting terror against the muslim scum. He actually supports the killing of Scottish, English, Welsh and Irsh troops who fight the war against terror. He is supposed to be a true Scot, he wants Scottish soldiers dead!

  • what is the tune is the tune played after the guards execute teh about face and advance I guess about 1 minute in?

  • Hi Castlerock,

The tune you are referring to used by the Guards, is surprisinglyGerman-its called Prussian Glory, or in German Pruessens Gloria, used very often in the Third Reich but goes back long before that to 1871 and the Franco Prussian War.

  • spelled Preussens wrong, me a German speaker!

  • Dude you are a dick. I'm sorry but there you have it. H.M Scots Guards CRACK in that clip.

  • These guys always look very sloppy to me. Their arms going up and down are never in sync. Looks messy.

  • your a prick

  • Are you referring to officers and the troops and swinging different arms but marching from the same foot?

  • Yeah, that must be part of it and I understand why it is ... I'm simply commenting that the net affect is a very sloppy look.

  • Height varies greatly too, as height restrictions are no longer in place.

Though I don't entirely agree with you I don't think you deserve to have your opinions ridiculed.

  • Well, thank you for that. I am truly sorry if I worded things indelicately. Obviously, the British army has always been a powerful force when and where it counted. I consider it a great honor and privilege to have such as these for allies. To my eye the arm swinging gives an overall messy look when marching. Simply a matter of taste, I suppose. In any case, even if I were an enemy of Britain, I would think long and hard before making a move against these guys. Cheers!

  • No, I think you gave an opinion, it wasn't venomous, there was merely risk of people becoming aggresively defensive. As for battle, well, they'd have gone in at the more stately slow pace so, none of this 'messy' arm swinging to worry about then. Though like you say, maybe the least of worries if in given context. Keep well.

  • You are fucking kidding me , right?

  • Umm, no. I'm totally fuckin' serious. They look messy.

  • I'm not seeing it.Arm swing, wrists and elbows are where they need to be. They are marking time commensurate with the Guards. They are not goose stepping North Korean morons.

  • Alright, let's face it, the British army was very successful in battle but they march terribly. Makes me very happy that the colonial Continental Army was trained by a Prussian general, Baron Von Steuben I think it was. Just an opinion. The arm swinging looks atrocious!

  • Sorry my dear Boy you do not obviously know anything about drill, dress and style. Scots Guards ARE style themselves and the Germans marching, yes they were truly ridicolous! Watch this movie with care and reflect!

  • I watched again ... and it still looks atrocious to me.

  • Ah, right. Possibly you're blind, that's why!

  • my late father was a member of F Company in the late 50s

  • That was a nice video. Do You think you can post the whole troopin the Colour?

  • which ones you? they all look kinda similar ;)

Are you the one with the big hair?

    :-*

  • The best Troop since 1988, immaculate. I was in the audience and it was a great military, musical and official experience. F Company (and the II Battalion SG) still remains the best unit in the entire British Army

  • how can it be the best unit in the British army when f-coy his full of crows straight out of training.most with a bad drug habit,

  • Sort that fuckin dressing out!!

  • Sort that fuckin dressing out!!
