I can only see 2 reasons to blurt that in that way: one is being offended that he referred to "types of gay" & being oblivious to Stephen's humor and preferences, the other just being typical schoolyard abuse. "Gay!"/"straight!" are not compliments, so please, if it wasn't meant as a barb, what was the purpose of what you said?
