@IggyandtheStardust My favorite Clash song changes on a daily basis, so I don't think I'd be able to call one song or another their "best," let alone "by far"! lol
This song reminds me of all those in the middle-east who just want an opportunity to have a say in their own future... To the people of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Iran, Syria, and Bahrain-- keep fighting against the clampdown!
@MetalheadJudasPriest rage? really? you're a more a rage fan than clash fan and thats cool but its a cover and rage is a rock-rap band. I'll just assume you're 15 or younger.
I think this song is about resisting any and all oppressive forces, whether it's your dead-end job (a product of the capitalist society), the government and its war machine, the police, or even racism. There are certainly references to each of these things in this song, and the Clash proved throughout their career that they stood with people who never got a fair shake at life - immigrants, the poor, the working class, minorities, etc. This song is the Clash's philosophy in a nutshell.
@p5050 I think it's when someone takes action which makes regulations more stricter and everything is more controlled. I think Joe is possibly talking about the Police ( who are the Clampdown) or the Government.
Wow, i didn't know this song was Clash, but i heard it on Futurama and i love Clash, and i thought: hmmm... these vocals are just like Joe's. and voila :D
@thisisdeadboy There are no stupid questions...just stupid answers. Assuming neither of us are consulting a dictionary, it's the love of the addition to and enforcement of arbitrary rules and regulations. As used here, it's the desire to achieve nothing save the disingenuous "nailing" of someone disobeying one of thousands of company (and likely Corporate) obscure mandates in order to inch closer to "success". (The only rational reason that thoughtful people are inexplicably nervous at work).
The judge said five to ten but I say double that again I'm not working for the clampdown No man born with a living soul Can be working for the clampdown Kick over the wall 'cause government's to fall How can you refuse it? Let fury have the hour, anger can be power Do you know that you can use it? Brilliant lyrics. Somebody tell the rioters in London to pick better targets, because Strummer would have. Stop knocking over mom and pop stores and go after the real problem.
The Clash really stands out compaired to other punk bands of that time. They were very educated and had some very, well, frankly, smart and sometimes even deep lyrics compaired to other bands of that era. And i love how they wereen't afraid to exsperement with thier style of music.
kick over the wall cuz government will fall how can you refuse it...This came out when I was 17 yrs old...great memories seeing the Clash in 1980-81 In San Francisco. The Clash was and still is my favorite Band of all time. RIP Joe.
( sometimes initial capital letter ) a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.
"The Sturmabteilung (SA) (Stormtroopers) functioned as a paramilitary organization of the Nazi Party. It played a key role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s.
SA men were often called "brownshirts" for the colour of their uniforms."
