Love the work Hanson is doing. There are a couple of things he hasn't mastered yet. The at rest position of the faces don't look quite natural enough. Another thing is that he hasn't gotten the visiphones of speech quite right. When he gets them to the point where a deaf person can read its lips he can probably call it done.

personally, I think the concept of the "uncanny valley" is absolute BS... it's the imperfections such as his inability to speak realistically that makes him somewhat creepy... not how closely he resembles a true human. as soon as androids become lifelike enough, that's when they stop being eerie.

It refers to the visual aspect of any anthropomorphized character (cartoons, video games, action figures, cg characters, dolls, etc.) What happens is as characters become more realistic, people accept them as respresentations of human, but when they get really close to appearing human people will reject it because of the imperfections of minor details. It's a real phenomenon, and it's what Hanson is trying hard to get past.

You need to get some ordinary people talking to it. All it talks about is robots and the surrounding issues that the makers are already obsessed with. It's function is thus somewhat circular - though it is a sort of mode of procreation. Forget the rubber and just make a 3D conversation robot with a face you can design yourself and a basic character you can select on the Xbox. The platform is already there. The preset characters would connect online and enrich their knowledge & responses.
