This campagin is one of the reasons that I am now on a path to become a CNM. After dismal birth experiances with my two children, I wanted to be part of the change that needs to take place for the sake of all.
BigPushTube, your assessment of the problem with childbirth in America is erroneous. The problem isn't with OBGYNs and hospitals
America is an unhealthy population. Obesity is an epidemic in this country, and the hypertension and diabetes associated with it are rampant among pregnant women. These conditions cause major complications with pregnancy, labor & delivery.
Also, Americans have less access to prenatal care because of insurance reasons.
@DrSandmann - Perhaps you don't intend on expressing yourself in such a defensive manner. The facts speak for themselves. It is the litigious climate coupled with the culture of 'non-responsibility' for one's own health care and non-disbursal of statistics and research which have led to the maternity crisis today. As a matter of fact, the simple irony in your statement is that we have educated ourselves - hence why we are seeking a solution in normalcy through midwifery.
This is a great summary of why we need more access to certified professional midwives and out of hospital birth. The lives of babies and their mothers depends on it!
The CDC reports that approximately 85% of all U.S. women will carry a pregnancy and given birth by the age of 44, which means that the majority of American women will personally experience a maternity care system in crisis.
