Hey Marlowe: I remember about 2-3 years ago, you had an incredible video doing "Pow" - you were wearing a long red top (if that helps), but I can't seem to find it. Did you remove it by any chance?? Thanks.
Perhaps where you live this might be the case though I've seen lots of young players think that they can slap their way through any tune - even those that don't even call for it. Jaco Pastorious didn't slap and he is considered to be one of the best bassists of all time.
Thanks but whenever anyone tells the truth it seems that all the slappers get mad and put a negative rating on the comment. Jaco was great and he never slapped, Rocco Prestia of Tower of Power was fantastic and he never slapped. James Jamerson was fantastic and he never slapped - and all these guys were incredibly melodic, held down the groove, and had numerous gigs. But the slappers always want to slap no matter what
Since when did popular appeal insure musical quality ? MM is indeed a great bassist who can also play walking bass lines and incredibly melodic lines. So he isn't just a slapper. Interestingly he does a version of Continuum by Jaco Pastorius which indicates his respect for melodic bassists. But you walk into Guitar Center and you hear all these slapeprs who couldn't play a walking line if someone paid them
Marlowe is there any chance in this slapping bass videos you can zoom or changes camera angles in in order to view a better technique applied in your amazing bass lines?
hey Marlowe. i love the unedited version. You were so mysterious in all your early videos. Its almost like a making of video. Keep rockin' for the people.
hey marlowe, just became a member of your site too brother,,,you make me want to never put my bass down,,I have a fender jag and its because of you I strive harder than i ever would have,,,thank you...
great man you are always fun to watch! wish i could get a few more good basses though. i play a '67 p bass through a '67 bassmaster but i wat to get a 5 string...
I like this video a lot. Seeing the unedited cut shows that you aren't super-human and that you have to work like the rest of us. It's inspiring. Very inspiring.
Your ARE the man! Unedited but still... you teach like you always do but in a unclassroom way. You've taught me alot and I thank you very much. Peace, Love & Mahalo! Aloha from Hawaii. - Tenchimouse
What the hack man! As you are spending some time in São Paulo, why don't you ask somebody to take you to Josino's place, the best handcrafter of the whole country! It's in Osasco, he well be pleased to meet you! PM me, I will give you the address. You will love his basses.
Hey Marlowe! I think this is the first time you have spoken in a video! That's great! You should do a vid where you are saying a bunch of stuff but not playing anything - maybe just some news bits for the day!
Hey man, i have a tip for you, get some free time and stop by the NZaganin Factory, its a brazilian Guitar Custom Shop located in São Paulo, i bet you're going to like their basses.
Problem is not playing my licks slow - no big deal, but its explaining/ dissecting (How did i do that??)something slow that I just made up, big difference;-)
hi thomas i have never laughed so much great lessons ,u put the fun back into playing this fantastic instrument keep up the great work absolute joy to watch keep on thumping mate
lol! whenever i come up with a good lick and then try to figure it out slowly, i pull out what remaining hair i still have. i feel your pain, marlowe! damn fine playing!
I don't know what anyone else thinks, but Marlowe uncut ROCKS!

Slap bass is such a small part of what a bass player should do - so many young players can do nothing BUT slap style.
bowiemott 3 years ago
i always thought it was the other way around (not enough young players playing slap style and playing distorted metal and fast pick style pieces)
i, as a young bass player, play about 60% slap and 40% fingerstyle (0% pick) when most other bassists i know play about 80% fingerstyle/picking
