  • I don't know what anyone else thinks, but Marlowe uncut ROCKS!

  • sounds like a lick i heard on a Louis Johnson vid....nice tho'...

  • So fantastic!!!! Thanks for posting!!!

  • Hey Marlowe: I remember about 2-3 years ago, you had an incredible video doing "Pow" - you were wearing a long red top (if that helps), but I can't seem to find it. Did you remove it by any chance?? Thanks.

  • Nice Bass! Is thiis a pre Ernie Ball? However best sound - awful technic! Compliments!!

  • you look so bored while playing..its not even right how good you are

  • Yeah... You've being in Brazil. Hope you've enjoyed my mother land. =-)

  • he got that powish feeling if ya know what i mean hahaahaahaha

  • if it grooves proper and the notes are good its good playing

  • he's got the play face on

  • You look like Hugh Lorrie in House with glasses and less hair in this xD

    Nice :)

  • I luuuv slap.. but you have to use it with prudence.. Im my case only 30% percent of the time.. otherwise it gets dense..

  • Yes, EliasMohr, but its not all about you ;-)

  • Thomas er sej :D

  • You have a huge thumb xD

  • Oh Yeah Music Man ^^

I've got Music Man too but Stingray 5 ;)

  • Slap bass is such a small part of what a bass player should do - so many young players can do nothing BUT slap style.

  • i always thought it was the other way around (not enough young players playing slap style and playing distorted metal and fast pick style pieces)

i, as a young bass player, play about 60% slap and 40% fingerstyle (0% pick) when most other bassists i know play about 80% fingerstyle/picking

  • Perhaps where you live this might be the case though I've seen lots of young players think that they can slap their way through any tune - even those that don't even call for it. Jaco Pastorious didn't slap and he is considered to be one of the best bassists of all time.

  • same here bro :)

    you're not alone

  • Thanks but whenever anyone tells the truth it seems that all the slappers get mad and put a negative rating on the comment. Jaco was great and he never slapped, Rocco Prestia of Tower of Power was fantastic and he never slapped. James Jamerson was fantastic and he never slapped - and all these guys were incredibly melodic, held down the groove, and had numerous gigs. But the slappers always want to slap no matter what

  • and marcus miller slaps and makes millions, numerous albums, movie scores, colabs, etc. it cant be just one way. JUS SHUT UP AND PLAY

  • Since when did popular appeal insure musical quality ? MM is indeed a great bassist who can also play walking bass lines and incredibly melodic lines. So he isn't just a slapper. Interestingly he does a version of Continuum by Jaco Pastorius which indicates his respect for melodic bassists. But you walk into Guitar Center and you hear all these slapeprs who couldn't play a walking line if someone paid them

  • So?

theyre two different styles of playing, and its good if u know both

  • It would great if you can get a tutorial on how to play Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" track. The bassline in that song is just groovy.

  • Great Groove !

  • This guy must have been playing since he was 3.

  • he sed he was playing since 14. just like me. but im only 16 lol

  • Looking good, Marlowe. great ideas and inspiration! Thanks man

  • Marlowe is there any chance in this slapping bass videos you can zoom or changes camera angles in in order to view a better technique applied in your amazing bass lines?

    Thank You.

  • We'll save that for a dvd;-) Im still just a guy with a webcam

  • @MarloweDK

  • hey Marlowe. i love the unedited version. You were so mysterious in all your early videos. Its almost like a making of video. Keep rockin' for the people.

  • hey marlowe, just became a member of your site too brother,,,you make me want to never put my bass down,,I have a fender jag and its because of you I strive harder than i ever would have,,,thank you...

  • Do you have any bass lines for any of those funky jams by A Certain Ratio? You rule dude!

  • Man you make me wanna go and buy a bass and learn to play.

  • great man you are always fun to watch! wish i could get a few more good basses though. i play a '67 p bass through a '67 bassmaster but i wat to get a 5 string...

  • Hey Marlowe, very nice man, reminds me of POW by Graham Central Station.

  • srry bro i just call it that bcuz everytime i see the bass it never says musicman it always says flea bass.

  • Do you HAVE to look all hot while you are playing that- it's distracting!

  • Thx, coming from you its a big compliment:-)

  • I always have to close my eyes...put my head back to figure things out...its a weird mind body connection hehe.

Great riff. I just got involved with a Funk/Soul/Rock project again. Super excited to get back to some grooves. thx!!

  • nice sun tan !

    how was your trip ?

  • Great!

  • I like this video a lot. Seeing the unedited cut shows that you aren't super-human and that you have to work like the rest of us. It's inspiring. Very inspiring.

  • isn't that a flea bass?

  • Ugh.

It's a musicman stingray. Or merlin. Forget what the differences are.

  • a "flea bass" doesn't exist dude ! That's a Musicman but flea used to play with one of this bass.

  • Ha there is a flea bass, Its by Modulus, but yea, this is a stingray, and flea used to jam with these

  • Your ARE the man! Unedited but still... you teach like you always do but in a unclassroom way. You've taught me alot and I thank you very much. Peace, Love & Mahalo! Aloha from Hawaii. - Tenchimouse

  • What the hack man! As you are spending some time in São Paulo, why don't you ask somebody to take you to Josino's place, the best handcrafter of the whole country! It's in Osasco, he well be pleased to meet you! PM me, I will give you the address. You will love his basses.

  • Hey Marlowe! I think this is the first time you have spoken in a video! That's great! You should do a vid where you are saying a bunch of stuff but not playing anything - maybe just some news bits for the day!

  • Marlowe - great line !

  • Thank you marlowedk

Im going to try this one !

    Did you enjoy your vacation?

    Greetings!

  • great as always

  • Hey man, i have a tip for you, get some free time and stop by the NZaganin Factory, its a brazilian Guitar Custom Shop located in São Paulo, i bet you're going to like their basses.

  • Great lick!

My fingers keep trying to play the bassline to Pow! though. ;o)

  • you look different from usual. tan? more hair?

  • you rule!!!!!

  • Great ! You're cooler than usual and I prefer like that. But that's only my opinion...

    Fred

  • The Ray is your friends? How is it playing a long scale again after a few weeks of short scale?

  • great man! haha

  • lol... I have the same problem. I can do fast licks but can't slow them down. Try playing the lick the Slowly.... slow it down... slowly.

    Nice video

  • Problem is not playing my licks slow - no big deal, but its explaining/ dissecting (How did i do that??)something slow that I just made up, big difference;-)

  • hi thomas i have never laughed so much great lessons ,u put the fun back into playing this fantastic instrument keep up the great work absolute joy to watch keep on thumping mate

  • Hello Man, I´m in Sao Paulo too, are you going to play here? where, when? ... please reply ASAP !

  • No, just vacation

  • hah you could also just film yourself playing the bass line and then afterwards play the same clip in slow motion ;)

  • waow: always groovin' no matter how complex the lick ! that is real talent !

  • hehe ... that was entertaining! :)

  • Did the rain stopped around there? :)

  • That sound is so chunky!!

    Excellent!!!

  • Is that what you call learning by doing? haha.

  • Haha marlow should get some 2g flesh tunnels it fits his face =p

  • You have a great percussive element going there, really really nice.

  • Great work. You got a pretty solid tan working for you, I'm surprised. I didn't know Danes tanned well.

  • dude your amazing

  • Nice. Can't wait to try it tomorrow.

  • No headphones today? lol

That was cool, though, to watch you go through the proccess. I wish i could play that fast, the actally slow it down to learn it. Awesome.

  • reminds me of pow

  • I´ve been once to Sao Paulo, for work, and to Rio, for fun.

Hope you´re having fun in Brazil. I´ve been watching your videos for a while. And I like your lessons.

You play wonderfully nice. An inspiration for beginners bassists, just like me.

  • well, at least i know you're human now haha. great line and good lesson

  • cool. does your friend play?

  • haha nice video as always! sometimes is funny when you find a fancy lick easier fast than slowed down

  • Damn that's FUNKY!!!!

  • lol! whenever i come up with a good lick and then try to figure it out slowly, i pull out what remaining hair i still have. i feel your pain, marlowe! damn fine playing!
